STARS
by HUM
from YOU'D PREFER AN ASTRONAUT
Dropped-D tuning (detune low E string to D)
note: this ain't exact; Hum has two guitars, so I've left
out some stuff, and the rest is my highly subjective
listening..I haven't included exact number of chord
strokes, when to hit distortion, etc...use this as
a starting point and listen to the song for the rest)

| I always imagined the piece of paper being the scores from some magazines "rate your boyfriend" test, and that although he got a good score, she just wasn't getting what she needs. I'm almost certian the last chorus says "I thought she'd be there holding daisy," meaning that the two had a kid and named it daisy, and also showing that they'd been together for a while and she'd done quite a lot of waiting. | |

| this song rules. knowing a little about the way people write lyrics, i think this was something that actually happened to him. it's very vague and metaphorical, i think overall he's just talking about "her" slipping away from him. i think we're not supposed to know what the numbers thing meant, neither did he. but she was searching for something "deep and meaningful", but to him it was just something incoherent... 1 2 Next | |

| It isnt Daisy, It's DAISIES! HOLDING DAISIES. I doubt there is any reference to people/animals. More like she finally had enough abuse from the relationship. "everything I want, nothing that she needs". It's looks to though as he took her for granted and took more than he gave back to her. Seven Nines and Tens.... I have no clue what that stands for. Was there ever a music video for this song? I know it was played on the radio a couple years back. And I here now and then. If anyone knows please send me a message. I would really like to see it | |

| The great thing about this song is that, like most of Hum's other songs, it's so open-ended it means a ton of different things to different people. Personally, I always thought that the Daisy character was a reference to the Great Gatsby. "She thinks she missed the train to mars, she's out back counting stars" refers to the character daisy because she thinks she missed this grand opportunity (in the book, marrying Gatsby) so instead of doing something about it, she just settles for the closest thing, counting stars (or marrying Tom) the other stuff is just icing. Then again, maybe I'm crazy. | |

| I saw the video once, it's actually how I first heard about HUM (I was too young to catch them the first time). The video is the band playing the song on an incredibly small stage while wearing neon orange prison jumpsuits. It's incredibly mid 90s. | |

| i think the crumpled piece of paper was some sort of note written to him. i don't know what the 7 nines and tens is, though. | |
