Hi - somebody wanted the Siouxsie version of The Passenger,
well I don't know exactly how different it is to the original
but here's how I play the Iggy version:

The Passenger - Iggy Pop
========================
(from the album Lust for Life)

Just keep on repeating the following chords:

Am F C G
Am F C E

Listen to the song to get the rhythm right...

Am F C G
I am the passenger
Am F C E
I ride and I ride
Am F C G
I ride through the city's backsides
Am F C E
I see the stars come out of the sky
(etc...)

(Lyrics are available at ftp.nevada.edu and cs.uwp.edu I think)

If anyone has worked out the tab for the bass or guitar
that goes over this (either version) then I'd love to
have it...

REQUESTS:
Bauhaus - All We Ever Wanted Was Everything
- Slice of Life
New Model Army - Family or Family Life
(can't remember which one but it
starts "Who was it that did this
to you...")

Iggy is saying: The universe is a car and I (the self) am the only passenger, but the same is true for you (your self). "I stay under glass" (I can't leave the car/universe). "he see things from under glass" The things seen through the windows are tied to the car. "we'll be the passenger" and "let's see what's mine" signify that there is only one passenger (living being) and that's me; everything else is a property of the car. But since another person is talking about the passenger "he sees" "he rides" it is the universe talking (something that you the listener sense from under glass) and you are the passenger since only the self can be the passenger. Iggy is thus saying: both you (the listener of the song) and I (myself) are the passenger, which is why he uses "you and me" and "yours and mine."

yeah this is based on a poem by jim morrison. so I would bet that the song is about observing the universe as some strange place that it's impossible to control. He is the passenger, not the driver. But he seems also like he is looking at the world as some strange new place that has infinite possibilities.

The message that I got from this song is that all that is beautiful in this world 'belongs' to the people that enjoy it. It seems to me he is describing the difference between the way you look around you when your driving around on vacation noticing all kinds of wonderful stuff versus the way your driving to work. The passenger is a hitchhiker trying to convince the person in the driving seat to step back from his rat race life and enjoy what he has overlooked for long time.

This song is about going down town and inviting anothe rman into the back seat of your car for anal sex. Rough anal sex at that (NB how the backsides become ripped). The term ride isn't necessarily about the car they are in...

this song is about The Stranger by Albert Camus. its about a guy who only sees other people and their actions, rather than displaying his own motivations. thus, he only sees others as if through a moving car. i suppose the stuff about "you and me" is maybe reaching out the audience to join this existentialist lifestyle, or perhaps a girlfriend or something.

Ever sat in a car with too many drugs in your body. All thoughts spin around your head. Sometimes seeing elementary things of life. a falling star, the hollow look of the night sky. Maybe a taxi driving you home after too many drinks at night. Leaning with your head against the window of the car....Imagine! ;-)

I think the sentiment is very Camus. The whole idea that he sees how wonderful everything is once he relinquished control, became the passenger instead of the driver. Though he has no say in the destination, he is now able to take in all the sights of the world along the way. "It doesn't take a degree to serve", that kind of mindset. On a side note, the book Time Traveler's Wife mentions this song when the main character is doped out in a car. Neat scene.
