VERSE:
F Am7
I thought I saw a man brought to life
Bb7
He was warm, he came around like he was dignified
He showed me what it was to cry
F Am
Well you couldn't be that man I adored
Bb7
You don't seem to know, seem to care, what your heart is for
But I don't know him anymore
PRE-CHORUS:
Dm
There's nothing where he use to lie
C
My conversation has run dry
Am
That's what's going on...
C F
Nothing's fine I'm torn
CHORUS:
C Dm
I'm all out of faith, this is how I feel
Bb F
I'm cold and I am shamed, lying naked on the floor
C Dm
Illusion never changed into something real
Bb F
I'm wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn
C Dm Bb
You're a little late, I'm already torn
VERSE:
F Am7
So I guess the fortune teller's right
Bb7
I should have seen just what was there and not some holy light
But you crawl beneath my veins and now
Pre-chorus:
Dm
I don't care, I have no luck
C
I don't miss it all that much
Am
There's just so many things
C F
That I can't touch I'm torn
CHORUS:
C Dm
I'm all out of faith, this is how I feel
Bb F
I'm cold and I am shamed, lying naked on the floor
C Dm
Illusion never changed into something real
Bb F
I'm wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn

You're a little late, I'm already torn

Before making love to a woman we men are a bit different from what we are after making it. We are kinder, sweeter, lovelier before, and women live this illusion: but after sex (she was lying naked on the floor), as we have obtained what we wanted, we change a little bit and get colder and women feel disillusionment. Every woman who has experienced that will say or think what NI sings. Don't you think so?

Okay i know this is way out there. But i always thought this song could be from the point of view of Mary Magdalen. Jesus being the man she knew and him teaching her what it was to cry. The chorus deals with when she went to his tomb and found that his body was no longer there. That she devoted her life to this man and that she was left feeling torn and unsure about. You may think im insane, but its just the way i interpreted the song.

ok well it's either a few things. I always though rape. But no, doesnt cut it. Maybe a guy who changed, and the comment on the veins leads me to believe this is about HEROIN and what it does?

OK i totally agree with lynnbird. In the music video.. If i remember correctly.. She was laying on the floor and movers from a moving company was moving all the furniture out of the house.. I hope im remembering this video im not sure though. But. I think this song has to do with heartbreak. But it goes much deeper than that. Its almost like he rapped her of her love for him. .. So I guess the fortune teller's right, I should have seen just what was there and not some holy light, I think this means that she should of known he wasnt THE ONE! hes not her angel. I really think that this song is deeper than it appears to be. Like a mistery behind the lyrics.

This song is definitely about a girl who meets a boy and falls in love with the idea him. Slowly she begins to see who he really is and is shocked that he's not the man "she fell in love with." "So I guess the fortune teller's right, I should have seen just what was there and not some holy light,"--> Another example of her trying to make him out to be someone he's not. The cold and naked part is symbolic for her vulnerability, in my novice opinion.

U all are idiots, this song is clearly about two men, who she was both in love with, but soonly dimished when a limb was torn (no pun intended) from her body, painfully, and viciously. Now its obvious a fortune teller told her this before hand.

Ok, so she fell in love with this guy and it was wonderful, really thought they were in love. Then she found out he fell in love with someone else (had an affair maybe) and she was blown away by this because she really thought he loved her...how could he love someone else. So then it doesn't work out for him with the other girl, and he wants her back. Even though she loved him and still does, how can she go back to him. She wants to, but how can she believe he really loves her..she knows their love wasn't enough before? How could he have loved someone else...

i know the writers of this song, and one of them quite well. it means exactly what it sounds like... broken heart/torn lover. the boy wasn't what the girl thought he was. and he didn't know what he was either.

i agree with catherineks.. although i still wanted to say, that a lot of you guys said "she was trying to make him out as something he is not" that sounds way too much like it was her fault or anything to me. everybody knows that love makes you blind.. and that was what happend. she really fell in love with this guy. he seemed to be perfect to her but by the time he kept on hurting her (he used to lie, he didn't know what his heart was for) she began to wake up. she had to realize, that he was not as perfect as she once thought. that her illusion never turned into something real.

Ah...where to start. First this hack job Natalie Imbruglia STOLE this song from Anne Preven and Scott Cutler of Ednaswap and Annetenna fame. Check out their recordings of the song to hear how it is supposed to sound. As for the meaning..it's more about what happens to a person when they endure a emotional stress like a relationship ending. You become "torn" and you are never the same. The use of a relationship is just a vehicle to convey the message.
