I forgot to actually comment on the song before, I totally agree with blueandyellow75 I think it is about life, things you experience. whatever you experience. It's about things that everyone goes through at some point "text book stuff" being like, you could have told them about it before they told you becuase it is so common, that you went through it to, if that makes sense. "The ABC's of growing up" it being like all the learning experiences you have to go through as you grow up, before you get to grips with the way things work, and learn a thing a two about life. Its like saying, yeah we all did that as we grow up, but don't regret it, cos everyone is like that, and everyone has to go through things like that, thats what I thought anyway.

To me, this song really is about entering a new part of your life and leaving another part behind. I do picture a graduation cermony when I hear this song, although that might just be beacuse of how it was used on the OC. I think what its about is just going through all the parts of your life and shes saying sorry and its not a big deal any more and it was just a part of growing up. "don't feed me violins" I think what shes getting at there is that you shouldn't be sad, just be happy even though part of your life is coming to an end. I don't think this song has a specific theme, Ex. break ups, suicide...I just think its life.

I was listening to this song last night and for some reason the idea that it was about drug/alcohol rehab hit me. "here's the day you hoped would never come" - the day you finally have to face your problem "don't feed me violins just run with me through rows of speeding cars" - don't cry wolf, just face it head on. "I've watched you slowly winding down for years" - you've been getting worse and worse these last few years "glistening in the cold sweat of guilt" - being guilty after drinking, doing drugs "now's a bad a time as any" - there's never gonna be a perfect time to get help, just do it now "none of us were angels and you know I love you, yeah" - we all make mistakes, but I still love you. I'm not saying I think this song is about someone going to rehab, but it really fits.

i don't think it has anything to do with boyfriend/girlfriend relationships. i think it's about a friend who is in need. her friend is in trouble, denying life's possibilities. her friend has experienced rejection and betrayal. saying "none of us were angels" shows her friend that nobody's perfect and we all experience heartbreak. but it's nothing to kill ourselves over. it's a part of life. "the coffee's never strong enough" means we're always striving for something more when we expect a certain outcome, but we don't always get what we expect. her friend is suicidal, but she says what he/she feels is a part of life and nothing to kill ourselves over.

fate. it has to be about fate. "it's in the ABCs of growing up" and "i know you think it's more than just bad luck" all point to that. i agree with flyingw, life is so exhilirating, and you never know when it's going to just...stop.

I personally think this song is saying "don't regret things you did in the past cause we're only human and there's no need to feel so guilty about it" And the "don't feed me violins" I always heard as "don't feed me violence"

I like this song, but mainly the first verse 'Here's the day you hoped would never come'...regardless of the songs meaning, whenever i hear that line i think of times in life when events have happened that you didn't expect or had hoped to avoid, life changing times.

I of course agree with everyone that this song is amazing but gman i interpreted it differently... i kind of thought maybe he cheated on her and felt really guilty because well when shes saying "cheating lovers" and "none of us were angels and you know i love you" i just kind of thought she was saying its okay don't lose your head i forgive you and she kind of says that when she says "its ok by me it was a long time ago" i dont know thats just what i heard...

i think she telling someone that its ok and everyone goes through these things....like its all fate...i think that's where the run with me through lanes of speeding cars line comes in...like thats all life is...running through lanes of speeding traffic...not knowing when you'll get hit...

This is the song used in the final episode of the OC season 3. It is played during graduation and although this somg may be about other things, it fit VERY well into the episode. I am now a huge fan of this song and is now my favorite by imogen.

I agree that this song is AMAZING! its all about the diffrent things that you go through in life. Some things that happen are big and some are little but in the end they are problems and everyone has some of those..."its in the ABCs of growing up"

I love this song too much. I think that it's about a parting/another sad moment, but instead of wallowing/brooding, she wants to just cherish the moment. The separation/pain that they are experiencing was inevitable ("textbook stuff"/"abc's of growing up") and so to complain/brood about it now is useless, and is not something that the singer wants to do. I LOVE this song. I heard it on the OC, and recognized the voice of Frou Frou, googled the song/artist to death, to no avail, until I realized it was actually by Imogen Heap! Ha.

I think it could be about a boyfriend, or simply someone she really cares about, and she tries to comfort them through a difficult time. It's beautiful , her voice is stunning

pretty obvious. papercuts and cheating lovers. the ABCS of growing up. for me its about the ups and downs of life. papercuts are smaller but cheating lovers is a big problem. people complain about the coffee when other's lives are being ruined. it gives fortunate ones that complain 24/7 a slap in the face.

reallly good song her voice is so soft and just amazing, very sothing i think this song is just about how she knows how hard things can get, shes been through it all aswell but even though it's been bad it happens to everyone and theres no reason for you to be hard on your self or even kill your self at the end when she sings it's ok by me, it was along time ago, i think shes maybe talking about something that happened between them a while back but it's in the past and everythings fine now great songgg :)

I'm sure as to the exact meaning of the song. But whenever I hear this line "Don't feed me violins" It makes me thing of like when something is sad and they have that violin going in like movies. It makes me think she is saying "Don't pitty me" or something like that.

when I looked at the lyrics elsewhere it said that is was "Don’t feed me violence, just run - " it said it on most of the others too, dunno which is write, cosit does sound like violins, and I can see meaning behind it being violins. great song anyway, I can't stop listening to it :)

OMG, no one has commented on this FANTASTIC piece of songwriting yet? I love it. I think it's probably one of her strongest songs. If this is an example of where her music is going, I cannot wait for her next album.

maybe i'm listening to a different version, but i found a few differences in lyrics: "here’s the day you hoped would never come" "I know you think it's more than just bad luck" and, the second time, "don't kill yourself" As for what I think of the song, I think it easily comes off as a break up song. She is saying that this is all a phase of growing up, loving and losing a love, and it's not worth losing his head/killing himself over. She is moving on for whatever reason, but she still loves him and he loves her.
