I wanna put forward the suggestion that although this song appears to be written about someone, it's just a sortof sub-plot...thing. I find this song to b more about the music really...I do admit that Brandon's lyrics are very deep, but through this song I don't really relate to what he is saying because of the mood that is set. For me, the title basically sums up this song...I think the chorus isn't meant to be significant...Just a thought though. I love Incubus, they're by far my favourite band.

Haven't read all of the comments but I wanted to add my opinion on what the chorus is about. Although it appears it is directed to someone else I think it might be about himself. When he says "then again you're always first when no one's on your side" he means that he comes first if he has no one else to think about but "a day will come when I want off that ride" i.e. he can't go it alone forever. I get the feeling it's about a relationship gone wrong and he feels that it's his fault. He says he's only a man and isn't perfect, has made mistakes and realises he wants someone back now.

I agree with PumpkinGurl in the sense that it wasnt her that broke up with him, but him that broke up with her, and I think he's trying to find some right in an all wrong situation. I believe he is trying to back his actions up. He begins to realize hes done wrong during the verses but in the chorus it seems he is trying to force what he did to be the right decision.

hey guys, i just wanted to add my thoughts on this one, to put 2 and 2 together. this is how i see it. Its like this and and the gurl were goin out and then they broke up b/c she found someone new. then she goes back to the original guy when she is left alone, and this happens, alot. and when he says "Heavy head up from my pillow, who could it be? I hope it's you" hes saying, i hate getting stuck in this position, and i hat that you always leve me and come back, and i want to stop this, but i can't help myself...i love you. at least thats whta i think i dont know maybe im wrong.

I think that the relationship has ended and he is "mourning" his loss. Then as the song progresses he realises that he was better off without her in the first place.

i think this song is about him wanting someone back and he doesnt feel motivated enoough to do anyhting... "Seven a.m. And I start my day thinking about what I've thrown away " "Eleven a.m. . By now you would think that I would be up " "Twelve p.m. and my dusty telephone rings Heavy head up from my pillow, who could it be? I hope it's you "

I agree for the most part with pumpkingurl that he's afraid of being alone. In the first verse he says that he "missed the best part" which I think means that he didn't realize it when they were at their happiest together. "Can we please go back to start?" definitely means that he wishes he could start over and change things but what things is he talking about? Well, "Forgive my indecision" could mean one of two things. Either he broke up with her or he did something really stupid that caused her to break up with him. I tend to think that he broke up with her though. This relationship has obviously gone through lots of drama as stated by "....when I want off that ride". So it's happened before.

i agree with pumkingurl. verse one in my opinion brandon is realising what he has lost, that he didnt appreciate her and needs her. verse 2 "By now you would think that I would be up But my bedsheets shade the heat of choices I've made" kinda leads me to believe that he is usually up at that time and is using his bed to isolate himself from everything he may be dwelling on the time he spent with her. well it makes sense to me later lp_may

definitely agree with pumpkingirl ~ he's thrown away something that he didn't realise he wanted so much, but the girl's too hurt so isn't coming back even though he wants her to... after completely isolating himself it's now all he thinks about; *and my dusty telephone rings... i hope it's you*

I like this song aswell. What does the lyric mean "you're always first when no one's on your side" ? I am confused about that.I think maybe it means that she comes back 2 him when she has noone else? I agree with bug zapper about the meaning of the song.

i agree with pumpkingurl... in my opinion.. i think that he left her for someone else and wants her back, and he is now looking back and seeing the mistake he made leaving in the first place. and when he says "could we please go back to start? forgive my indecision" he is saying that he wants to start over so he doesn't make the same mistakes again... ehh i dunno it all makes sense in my head lol just hard to put into words!

I know this is a messed up comparison (different genre), but the meaning is exactly like Ashanti's "Foolish".... I know, this one has better lyrics, but the meanings are there.

I think the first verse 'the garbage truck backs up...' is saying that he has thrown something away that he realises he needs, Overall I think it is a song about an ended relationship.
