INCUBUS – UNDER MY UMBRELLA
MORNING VIEW
Standard Tuning;4/4 Time throughout; Moderate Rock
I’ve seen a few versions of this song but they have all been just off enough to
the point I decided to post my version. I may not have put all the right amounts
on here but the notes are right. Note that Mike uses a lot of effects and makes
it tricky to find out exactly what he’s using all the time, i.e., a lot of his
distortion also has phaser in it; so maybe I’ll ask him if I ever meet him again.

I tried to convey the timing, but make sure to pick each note very quickly.
These are the parts to the song. I’m sure you can figure out the rest. If you

This is one of my favorites on Morning View. I think mrclean pretty much summed it up. But none of my friends like this song much. I think it's amazing...

Brandon broke up with his girlfriend sometime between Make Yourself and Morning View. If you look at the album in that light it seems like a break up album. Think about it, "These eyes are not the color that your arid eyes might be." Arid eyes to me means that whoever those eyes belong to is completely unemotional at a time when, apparently, the singer's eyes are not dry. "No I was not around when those eyes of yours decided, so I refuse to live before the sights they choose to see." He got dumped and it was not a mutual decision? Normally I wouldn't accuse Incubus of writing songs that deal with their own personal lives. They tend to tackle bigger issues that deal with society and humanity at large. On the other hand, Brandon obviously did dig that chick...he wrote Stellar about her, and just look at those lyrics. Waaay personal (but still a good song.) Either way, "Under My Umbrella" is one of my favorite songs off this album.

great song, i'm sure the meaning has been unvailed by now...but i would advise for all of you that actually love incubus to try sounding somewhat intelligent. Example some of you say that their message is basically "fuck you society" now that's what some metalhead would say...try using other words. your just lowering yourselves to the way society uses words like fuck.

The chorus line should read "Now I was not around, when those eyes of your's decided so I refuse to kneel before the sights you choose to see!" Am I right?

Nope, Mr Clean pretty much summed up what my interpretation of it was. It's really about nonconformity and having your own visions, ambitions and views. Similar message to Redefine. It also deals with ignorance and those who believe they're right and think everyone should agree with them: "If this is right/If this is sight, I'd rather be wrong/blind" etc. Anyway, excellent song!

this is one of the greatest songs ever written. im serious, this is the most underappreciated song ive ever heard. "when i close my eyes i can see for miles" - when things start to seem like they're too much to take, just close your eyes and pretend everything's alright, therefore seeing for miles. "there's comfort in my dark seat and chaos in the aisles" - from the view of an outcast in society, watching the world around him/her. there's comfort in his loneliness while hes watching all the chaos in the world around him. if you've ever been in this position this is such a perfect description. "These eyes are not your eyes And these eyes are not the colors that Your arid eyes might be" - watching a friend change with society, or becoming popular. the outcast knows who the real person is and is seeing the person/friend he knew change into something they aren't. the other lines are basically saying well, maybe i never really knew the real person. they might really be who they're becoming. "Now I was not around When those eyes of yours decided so I refuse to kneel before the sights you chose to see" - basically, this is about not wanting to comform to society and having your life controlled. 'the sights you chose to see' basically is saying i refuse to live my life the way you've already decided for me "When I close my eyes I remember why I smile" - same as first two lines of song "Under my umbrella I'm an accomplished exile" - under my umbrella is a metaphor for kind of like, watching society from your safe little haven. watching people go to waste, etc. just wondering how people can be so stupid...and trying to do the right thing. Chorus twice, then this "If this is right... I'd rather be wrong... If this is sight... I'd rather be blind! " - if what society deems normal is right/sight, then i'd rather be wrong/blind...

Ok first off.. this song needs to be WRITTEN correctly before it can be interpreted so. "These eyes are not your eyes, these eyes are not the color that, your arid eyes might be, no, i was not around when those eyes of yours decided so, i refuse to kneel before the sights you choose to see".. this song is as blantent as i possibly can be.. think about it.. how many times have you closed your eyes and wished a feeling would just go away?...it keeps playing back in his mind in his "dark-seat" he has comfort.. chaos is merely whats remaining outside of his head.. the "aisles".. The arid eyes he refuses to deal with are those of an idealistic partner who sees fit that they must be deemed the higher power in the relationship.. he refuses to be the love slave so in other words.. hed rather be blind.

i agree with mrclean's translation. i think this is one of the best songs i've ever heard. this song is an example of why i love incubus... a lot of the songs today talk about unimportant things in life... but in incubus' songs... it's not. they talk about important things in life and things that u can just relate to... well anyways i love this song and i think it has great meaning to it.
