I think its pretty simple. Even if you fight with someone frequently, if you love them enough it is worth sticking around for and waiting to see what happens.

... It does sound a bit like something a boy band would pump out, if ony for the "diamonds start as coal" lyrics.

WORST Incubus song ever. Reminds me of a Police song, which I like, but hearing Mike play like this is embarassing. I laugh everytime Brandon says "I'm not calling you an animal, I think we just fight too much." That is soooo cheesy and not Brandon at all. Where did the good ole days go?

gustava1986 pretty much nailed it. hehehe. he pertains to fire as the relationship being a mess in the beginning, but says that it will get better if they give it some time.

"If it’s good to instigate than we’re a fast horse, bet on us. I’m not calling you an animal I think we just fight too much." These lines are awesome, Brandon Boyd shows that even a simple conversation can turn into an arguement. But I think the meaning of the song is pretty straightforward, it's about a some people in a relationship who fight too much. Boyd makes the metaphor that their relationship is like coal that will later turn into a diamond. "Give it time girl, the fire feels divine. The sweetest things they burn before they shine." - this means that their relationship will be strengthened by the fighting. every couple fights, but over time their relationship will become strong and beautiful like a diamond. I know I explained it in a pretty corny way, sorry.

All relationships take time to develope you cant expect to go into something and it to be a "diamond", but rather keep at it and soon enough that "coal" of a relationship will turn into a "diamond" with all the love you put into it. Great lyrics naw mean

I agree with shazeea, though I do like the "now you’re seeing a side of me I wished no one ever would" and "we think too much" just because it is so true

i think this and "oil and water" are two different viewpoints on the same relationship and its problems. "oil and water" is pretty self-explanatory, saying that it's just not gonna work out no matter what is said or done. "diamonds and coal" is the other side of that argument, saying that all relationships need work and that nothing is perfect. you need to work on the relationship if you want it to last. 1

this song is pretty easy to understand... he's telling his girlfriend to not give up on them because the relationship will just get better with time... "love isn't perfect, even diamonds start out as coal." it's a beautiful metaphor. i love it. and for those of you who think it isn't a good line, you don't know what you are talking about... brandon uses perfect metaphors... and this just like the others is a perfect metaphor... it makes perfect sense.

Where did the good ole days go? It's called maturing. Bands change over time and if you adore them, you'll accept it (maybe not like it, but accept it). I love this song. My boyfriend and I saw them in concert a few nights ago and this song just fits our current relationship so much. We've started fighting a lot but we're not going to break up...after three years, we've been through too much to let some silly fights ruin everything. I loved this song when it first came out but now I'm in love with this song after hearing it live!

Don't feel your explained it in a corny way. I truly know what you're talking about! I agree. It seems a lot of the album has reoccuring themes about realistic love, as opposed to publicized, idealistic love. Nothing is guarenteed, and nothing is ever perfect. Even love. (In my opinion, of course.)
