| "Is it a spell that I am under Keeping me from seeing the real thing" Personally, I see those lines, individually, as an inability to understand why he has not been successful thusfar in love. (Wondering if he's under a spell that has kept him from this realistic form of love- not this idealized, overdone form of it.) Though, how it connects to the song as a whole, I don't know. Perhaps he hasn't found love yet, but he's already in a state of understanding.. he is aware of love's holistic nature: how it will sometimes bring pain, but is generally beneficial to humans. | |

| "Love hurts… But sometimes it’s a good hurt And it feels like I’m alive" Easily the most impactive lines in the song (to me). He is aware that love is not all beauty and an endless happiness, but accepts this, and is searching for this attainable love. Not the idealistic, constantly talked about love, but a more realistic one. | |

| I think this song is gorgeous. He reflects that what he learned as a boy is that love doesn't steal, it isn't one sided. He's asking for truth in the person that he loves, because obviously he feels blind in love, wandering in a place that's different from what he learned as a boy. He wonders if it's a spell he's under keeping him from seeing the truth, that's why he's asking it from the other person. In the chorus he explains that love may hurt, but it makes him feel alive at times, and that's what he hangs onto. He reflects how beautiful love is and how badly he wants to reap the splendors because without it he won't survive. So it's almost as if he'll take love at all costs, having this idealistic view of love, though denying the realities of it. In the second chorus he reveals how vulnerable he feels with a melancholy "through my surface is loneliness and the rain." They're "drinking to youth" in the sense that he's searching for what he used to believe in, for what he had as a boy. Such is a situation I think we all find ourselves in. Creating our own ideas on what love should be, and when you're finally immersed in it, those ideas disappear and you begin to question everything. A "love is blind" thing. | |

| Oh sorry, my interpretation. Sometimes the only proof that you're truly in love is when you feel that pain that you can only feel when you're in love, it hurts deep down in your heart. Therefore love sometimes the heart ache is a good thing, as the negative is a reassurance of the positive. Basically the song is about how easy it is to fall in love when your young, but as you go through relationships and have your heart broken so many times you shelter yourself against the bad feelings and inadvertantly the good feelings as well. As we grow older and go through many relationships, falling into TRUE love is far more difficult than it used to be, and the proof is usually in the pain. Love goes through a lot of hardships but when it makes it past all of that, it is absolutely divine. It's all about feeling true love. | |

| brandon is basically telling us that love equals pain.when you love someone you succumb yourself to unearthly anxiety...but its that one time you feel what true love is,when you live in that moment that can`t be explained...it makes the hurt worth while.it makes you feel alive re: the chorus "love hurts but sometimes it`s a good hurt and it feels like i`m alive"............ "without love i won`t survive" | |

| maxpower, I believe you are mentally (and perhaps physically) handicapped. It's the best Incubus song in a long time ago, and easily the best on the album. Close your eyes and listen to the melody, and if you feel nothing I'm ashamed to have you as a fellow fan. | |

| I love this song but it loses its luster a little more quickly than the rest of the album. To me, it means love is scary and can freak you out, even hurt you, but you have to go with it. Sometimes you have to let the other person "try" you when you're freaked out. | |

| I bought Light Grendades a few weeks ago, and hadn't actually listened to it until last night, and I discovered this beautiful. It managed to find me at a dark spot in my life, and the lyrics are just awesome. Tonight we drink to youth And holding fast to truth I don’t want to lose what I had as a boy - He's toasting to youth, because he wants to keep the feeling of what he thought love was going to be like when he was a child. My heart still has a beat But love is now a feat As common as a cold day in LA - Now that he has lost his love, he feels as if he'll never find it again, hence "as common as a cold day in LA", because it's not something that would happen as commonly as it would in Sacramento. Sometimes when I’m alone, I wonder Is it a spell that I am under Keeping me from seeing the real thing? - Again he is wondering if he'll ever fall in love in his ideal way again. Love hurts… But sometimes it’s a good hurt And it feels like I’m alive -When you are broken hearted, sometimes even though it can be painful, just the thought of you being able to do something as wonderful as falling in love can make you feel good. Love sings When it transcends the bad things Have a heart And try me, ‘cause without love I won’t survive -When you are able to overcome a road block on the path to love it can show you just how powerful love can be. He feels that since love has failed him, he may never succeed in it, and he doesn't want that. I’m fettered and abused I stand naked and accused Should I surface this one man submarine? I only want the truth So tonight we drink to youth I’ll never lose what I had as a boy -He feels isolated, and still has many questions about what has happened. He needs to decide whether or not he should open up to others again. In the end he decides that he is not going to let the way he feels about love to go away. Sometimes when I’m alone, I wonder Is it a spell that I am under Keeping me from seeing the real thing? Love hurts… But sometimes it’s a good hurt And it feels like I’m alive Love sings When it transcends the bad things Have a heart and try me, ‘Cause without love I won’t survive | |

| this song confuses me...i think it's beautiful, but the chorus seems to be saying that love might hurt but it can be good, but the verses seem to give off a more negative view on love i.e. "Is it a spell that I am under Keeping me from seeing the real thing". if anyone can help explain what they think it means, i'd appreciate it. | |

| love hurts is about learning to let yourself love in this jaded world that we live in today, ex it is as common as a cold day in LA. in a place where half of all the marriages end in divorce and the other half are clearly not happy how do we find a love like we thought was possible when we where children? the pure true never ending fairytale love that is so good and so beautiful that is so intense that it, that is why "love hurts". | |
