Incubus Oil And Water Chords Guitar Tab

Oil And Water
Incubus
Tabbed by David St Bernard
I disliked chord-tabs when I was first learning, but now I appreciate them. Here's one
a brilliant new song.

G Cmaj7
verse:
G Cmaj7 G Cmaj7 G Cmaj7 G Cmaj7
Bm Cmaj7 Bm Cmaj7 Bm Cmaj7 F C
bridge:
Am Bm F
Am Bm Em

Chord chart:
There are many ways to play the chords. These are just my suggestions.
G Cmaj7| Bm Cmaj7 F C |
Bm F Em D#aug D

Yeah this reminsd me of Morning View. This is my favorite off of the album other than 'Pendulous Threads.' Anyone have any theories for meaning? I really hate dissecting Incubus songs because I feel like they're so above me haha

wow, i dont think this is the best song. more corrections. "You and I are like oil and water and we've been trying, trying, trying, ohhhh, to mix it up. We been dancing on a volcano and we've been crying, crying, crying over blackened souls. Babe, this wouldn't be the first time. It will not be the last time. There is no parasol that could shelter this weather. I been smiling with anchor on my shoulders. But I've been dying, dying, dying ohhh, ohhh, oh to let them go. Babe, this wouldn't be the first time. It will not be the last time. There is no parasol that could shelter this weather. Babe, this wouldn't be the first time. It will not be the last time. We were trying to believe everything would get better. We been lying to each other Hey! Babe! Let's just call it, call it, call it ohhhhhhhhh, what it is! Oil and water! Oil and water! Oil and water!" this song is GREAT lyrically but uhhh earth to bella is my favorite off the cd.

Yeah, I think so too, that's why I thought I should post lyrics. Some of the words I couldn't understand clearly so feel free to correct.

To me, the song is all about a relationship that is doomed, but, neither one of them really knows why. It's like, they're so completely different, but, at the same time, there's no one else on the planet that fits the other as perfectly as they do. But, even though they continually go through the motions (arguing to harmony and back again), he's starting to realize that they just don't mix (like oil and water...) What I'm not sure about is whether or not he's deciding to keep trying, or if he's calling it quits... Anyone?

Hey maxpower511, who the hell are you to say these songs lack origionality. I have no idea where you decided these were "played out metaphors". I've never heard anything about oil and water or diamonds and coal being compared to relationships, and I've listened ot my fair share of music. I think the new Incubus album is a great escape from all the other modern day music.

Let's just call it, what it is. Oil and water. To me, it's not about a relationship that doesn't work; it's about one that WILL work because of this open acknowledgment of differences and obstacles. Totally gorgeous.

I definitely think this whole song is an extended metaphor about two people in a relationship that realize their personalities just don't mix well. Although the comparison seems trite, the tone is original. Instead of it being this depressing realization, it seems more like this awesome epiphany. They can finally just accept that they're not meant to be, it's not their fate to be together. By the way, I have a strong feeling that this song was inspired by Brandon's breakup with Carolyn Murphy about a year ago. This album has a different vibe than some of incubus's other stuff off Morning View and Make Yourself. They've really come into their element with this cd, definitely their best yet.

This is an awesome, awesome song!! Just a few corrections, though: I think it's "OVER blackened souls" instead of "the blackened souls" and "there is no PARASOL" instead of "no better soul" and "I've been smiling with ANCHORS on my shoulders" instead of "smiling with birds on my shoulders"

I think this song is about humanity, just as I see Light Grenades as being. (you can go check my post there) We build cities by volcanoes then cry when people die, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? It is saying disasters happen but we lie to our selves that everything is alright and no one is going to die, but frankly, shit happens and we can't protect our selves from everything. The soul of humanity tries to shelter its self from problems. It's happened before and it will happen again. Also.. mixing oil and water, it seems that oil has become more important to us than water sometimes.

Yeah this is a great song, but Earth to Bella is simply my favorite all because of the climax from the first part. It is so simple but effective. I've learned to play 3 songs off this album already: Anna Molly, Paper Shoes, and Earth to Bella Pt.1 This is a great CD glad I got. The artwork is sweet too.

this is the best song along with rouges on light grenades. i think this one is about a relationship where both people keep trying to make it work but no matter what they feel the other isnt completely honest and that interferes with their relationship. oth of them want to end it but they also never want it to end.at the end it seems he is tired of all of the stress and just wants to end it.

i gotta say that the music in a lot of songs, and brandon's voice is awesome, but these lyrics are really lacking originality. i mean, diamonds and coal, love hurts (but sometimes its a good hurt), and oil and water? come on! those are old played out metaphors, incubus' got better.

It's about liking a person and trying to be with him...but it's just no possible , because you both are too different and you just don't mix , no matter how much you have tried to "mix it up" . And i think the answer is to go your separate ways - "Let's just call it what it is - oil and water"...

oil & water is a great concept to how things wont work out or just simply cant. if youve ever seriously mixed the two you could see why.... but one thing that i thought maybe someone else could elaborate for me more on is the words "oil & water" maybe it means that perhaps she is oil and he is water or vice versa? Meaning that one is dirty and the other one is pure? Maybe one person has more "experience" than the other when it comes to this? IDK im just making suggestions :)
