Incubus Biography

Band Picture

Incubus consists of Ben Kenney (bass), Brandon Boyd (vocals, percussion), Dj Kilmore (turntables), Jose Pasillas (drums), Mike Einziger (guitars).

Incubus is a five-man alternative rock band based out of Calabasas, CA. Members include Brandon Boyd (vocals and percussion), Mike Einziger ( guitar), Ben Kenney ( bass), Jose Pasillas ( drums) and DJ Kilmore ( turntables). Former members of the band include DJ Lyfe ( turntables) and Alex Katunich (a.k.a. Dirk Lance) ( bass). The band's name may seem a peculiar choice to fans, as an incubus is a type of demon that, in mythological lore, lured women to bed and impregnated them. The story behind the name is that the band needed to think of a name hours before their first show and, after a few failed choices, Mike looked in a dictionary and chose "Incubus" almost at random. Mike says that the name was chosen because it sounded silly; Brandon holds that it was chosen because they were teenagers and the definition had the word "sex" in it. "We really didn’t want to rape women in their sleep. But, we were fifteen and it seemed harmless to us then, and we never changed it," says the band. Incubus has also tried to cover its tracks by stating that they got the name from a plant in South America that produces mind-altering chemicals. However, the fabled Incubus plant does not actually exist. Incubus has a hot jazz feel to some of their music.

In 1990, while they were attending 8th grade at A.E. Wright Middle School, drummer jose pasillas met Mike Einziger, who spent most of his time playing guitar in his bedroom. Later, while attending Calabasas High School, the pair became friends with bassist Alex Katunich, who had recently been kicked out of jazz band because he couldn't read music and he threw gum in all the jazz flautists hair. In 1990, the three decided to form a music group for fun and at first, mainly played Metallica and Megadeth covers (though Jose was not too interested in them). These covers helped them land a few party gigs, and the three became the "entertainment for the neighborhood"- basically meaning they got drunk and shrieked alot. Paige recalls that their first concert was all covers, including music by Metallica, Megadeth, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana: "It was like Fade To Black and Enter Sandman and a couple of other songs. And we actually came together, the three of us. It was pretty funny. I mean we were just thrashing. I don't even know if we completed all the songs entirely, you know?" The band has also admitted that they are huge fans of legendary rock band Phish.
