I think this song is about a man and his wife/girlfriend swinging, or expanding their sex life. The most obvious clue is Paul's "I’ve been swinging all the time, think it’s time to learn your way. I picture you and me together in the jungle it would be ok." is an obvious one, but also things like "she says it helps with the lights off"

Here is what Paul had to say about why they named the song after Leif Erikson: Paul: That was one of those things where, if you were to be able to isolate the keyboard part to that song-- which you probably can't-- but if you were in the studio, or if you just heard us doing a soundcheck, there's a quality to it which someone commented was kind of Viking-esque. Like if you were watching a film, you could see the galleon approaching the coast, the fucking Vikings peering over the edge or whatever, and then I just said, you know, "Oh, Leif Erikson," and I was really happy that everyone could live with it, because for me, it's like absurdist. Absurdism is great, 'cause why not? It seems more arbitrary to take a lyric and make it your title than to take something completely out of left field."

"She swears I’m a slave to the details But if your life is such a big joke, why should I care?" A slave to the details.. meaning that he won't see the bigger picture of what's going on between them. It's almost like in the beginning, he's the one who is completely about sex, and she's trying to explain to him that you can't have a strictly sexual relationship with out such attachments forming. His response is "But if your life is such a big joke, then why should I care?".. I think this is his way of saying that she's been around and it's hard for him to take her advice seriously. "The clock is set for nine but you know you’re gonna make it eight. So that you two can take some time, teach each other to reciprocate." I think what this means is that they're each becoming more and more excited about this relationship.. they want to 'set the clock back' so that their time together can come faster. They want to "teach" eachother to show their feelings freely, because they are both afraid of admitting that they really do care immensely for eachother. "She feels that my sentimental side should be held with kid gloves But she doesn’t know that I left my urge in the icebox" His sentimental side should be held with kids gloves? I think what this means is that she's trying to tell him that she sees his attachment and that she knows he has a different side to him. However, what she doesn't know is that "he left his urge in the icebox", which could mean that his feelings for her aren't more then they were before, even though she would like them to be. This is where I get [slightly more] confused: "She swears I’m just prey to the female, Well then hook me up and throw me, baby cakes, cuz I like to get hooked." She's explaing to him that he just plays right into women, does just what they want him to. Has sex with them. His response is "well then hook me up and throw me, baby cakes, cuz I like to get hooked". I think what he's trying to explain is that if that's what this relationship is, then he's all for it. He wants this sexual relationship, then he wants to be thrown away. "I’ve been swinging all the time, think it’s time to learn your way. I picture you and me together in the jungle it would be ok." I think what this means is that he's had quite a few stricly-sexual relationships, but he's ready to finally commit to this girl. He's finally admitting that he, indeed, loves her. "I picture you and me together in the jungle, it would be ok"... I see the jungle as being love and he thinks that maybe they can last; they will manage to get through the "jungle" and will be just fine in the end. He sees a lasting companionship in her that goes beyond love. "I’ll bring you when my lifeboat sails through the night That is supposing that you don’t sleep tonight" I'll welcome you into my life if you are willing to except my offer. "It’s like learning a new a language Helps me catch up on my mime" Relationships are such a new thing for him. Hm. Help him catch up on his mime? Mime has so many meanings.. but. I think this means that it's going to help him catch up on all his acting. He's now going to learn to actually show affection and love, rather than faking it. "If you don’t bring up those lonely parts This could be a good time" If you don't bring up all my previous sexual relationships, I'll be able to enjoy this more. He's asking her to forget his past. "You come here to me We’ll collect those lonely parts and set them down You come here to me" Once again, if you are willing to be with me, then we'll both just forget about the past and move on... Together. "She says brief things, her love’s a pony My love’s subliminal" "She says brief things". I think that line is particular is about her saying "I love you", and her "love's a pony".. meaning, she says it often and is quite proud that she has managed to tame him. His love is "subliminal", so he doesn't say I love you quite as often as she does, but he admits to its existence. Sorry it's so lengthy. But I just wanted to analyze the whole song.

I keep thinking the icebox line is him trying to be less horny by using ice on his crotch, lol kinda random and it doesn't really seem to fit the style of the song but hmmm. Probably more metaphorical than that, like most of your suggestions so far.

i think a pony is slang for 25 british pounds, "her love's a pony", maybe this song is about a hooker

"She feels that my sentimental side should be held with kid gloves But she doesn’t know that I left my urge in the icebox She swears I’m just prey to the female," I don't know about anyone else, but what hit me when I heard those words was when he says "She feels that my sentimental side should be held with kid gloves" he's saying that because he's so cold, she feels like she has to be very very careful with what he says of his emotions because she feels as though they could be taken back at any minute. "But she doesn't know that I left my urge int he icebox" she doesn't realize he doesn't really wish to have sexual relations so much and the next line confirms that because he's saying that she swears he just loves the pussy. heh. "I’ll bring you when my lifeboat sails through the night That is supposing that you don’t sleep tonight" To me that's saying if she isn't blinded by something, he'll bring her with him through everything. "You come here to me We’ll collect those lonely parts and set them down You come here to me" It seems that this part is saying if she starts to take it deeper they'll resolve matters together, but she has to make the initial move. "She says brief things, her love’s a pony My love’s subliminal" This could be saying that she lets him know that she loves him and that she shows it freely whereas he doesn't show much love at all and she has to look further to see it.

"But she doesn’t know that I left my urge in the icebox" Anyone else take a darker meaning to that line? That is, "urge in the icebox" in reference to thoughts of murder. Thus, the "urge" being one with an ice pick.
