Enjoy what you do. If not, there's no sense in doing it.

| Ethilien makes a good case. Both for his hypothesis, and also for being a jackass. If you can't see the difference between the arguments you and I made versus the ones the other people did, then you're truly a buffoon. We both put forth coherent, supportable guesses with tangible evidence to support our ideas. I could spend 5 seconds and destroy your thesis, but if you look closely I'm not here to ridicule anyone's actual ideas; I just insist they be presented in a rational fashion if they want to be taken seriously. Why not just say, "I feel this song is about puppies and ice cream"? Would that presentation of an idea on art deserve your respect? In your world I guess so, because it's ok to interpret anything however you want to. Well, it's not okay, because it insults the song and the songwriter if you don't at least make an real effort to support your claims, especially if you're going to commit them to some sort of public forum. Check and mate. | |

| I think its about forming a relationship with someone you wouldn't expect to. This song is written in present tense ("oh look, it stopped snowing). I think he might be telling someone about this relationship. From here its confusing. Is it a metaphor? Or did his friend really get into trouble? Its hard to tell, but I am pretty sure that something happens where they wont be able to see each other anymore, and it disappoints him because "he was growing on me" If anyone can figure this out any further please contact me. | |

| I think it's about getting to know someone extremely well, and becoming really close to them. I've always thought it was kind of weird when he says "He severed segments"... I've always kind of thought of that as a reference to someone that you love but you just know is doing something wrong. It's like one of those friends who has a really bad habit, but you are so close with them that you just can't bring yourself to depart. "But they caught him with his case in that public place"... Meaning, he got caught with his wrong-doing. After he's caught, Paul or whomever can no longer offer him his friendship because he knows it's time to just let go. He was "growing" on him, so it was hard to say goodbye, but it was at just the right time. I think it's just about one of those friendships that seems alright, and you really trust the person, but there is something inherently wrong with them. And despite them being so good to you, it's better if you just let them go. | |

| I don't know why, but whenever I hear "but they caught him with his case in a public place" it makes me think of a flasher. I don't care if that's what it actually means, but that's what I think of and it makes me laugh just a bit. | |

| He didn't tell me til after I submitted my idea about Jack the Ripper on this forum, imbecile. Or are you too dumb to read the dates? And what is so hard about understanding that whether my or your idea or anyone's idea is right or wrong doesn't matter as long as the person is making a sincere effort to understand the song? If people "can say what theyt want about any song" and not make that sincere effort, then why don't I have the right to call them on it and say what I want? Still haven't addressed that issue, have you, you debating wizard you. And I love how, instead of tackling the issues, you revert to the classic maneuver of a defeated child-- you call me a liar and make ad hominem insults. At least I make arguments to support my claims. You just whine like a little girl and say, "NOOO! You're a big poopy faced liar! I don't like you!" Well done. Now write back and give me something else to laugh at, because I know you lack the willpower to resist trying to sneak in the last word, don't you? | |

| OK, this might be a little farfetched but lets see... I think that this song has something to do with the Holocaust. Firstly, the friend he was refering to is from Poland. Secondly, he has a beard, which is common amongst orthodox Jews. His friend was captured, it seems, as a butcher, which could be a euphimism for someone particularly dangerous. It also says that he seemed to mind his own business, as he severed segements secretly (have to love alleration). What I conclued is that this is a political song. Perhaps Mr. Banks is against the Patriot Act. In the song he is saying how his friend was detained for something he probably didn't do, just for simply being profilable. There's a lot more to expand upon but perhaps he also feels a little hypocrisy in this. When he says that "he was growing on me" he could be aluding to the way that he himself is an American, or more specifically a Republican, and feels remorse for harboring such practices. Then again, its only an idea. | |

| Hey I'm not saying their stuff didn't have a good case...they didn't really offer any evidence, but i think anyone can be free to interpret the song however they wish to because hey they have the same right we do. i really don't care if they do say that it's about puppies and ice cream. or pickles. and really, did anyone offer anything that farfetched? no. not really. and yes, you can interpret anything...well, in this case, anything being art...however you want. because art is subjective. and hey if they want to insult the song or songwriter, they can. oh, and i'd love to see you try and destroy my thesis. read the book. | |
