| personally, i feel like the song is more about an off-the-cuff affair, then, similarly to clueless, the ensuing guilt. "will you put my hands away, will you be my man?" this woman is asking her lover to take her and to not let her reservations get in the way. Hands in this song keep reminding me of some kind of struggle, like the woman is having second thoughts about her actions in the beginning. "serve it up, don't wait. let's see about this ham." she wants to do it before she changes her mind. the "ham" is the rediculous situation they're in. "oh, what happened?" the guilt has slapped her in the face. "homespun desperation's knowing. inside your cover's always blown." the woman understands why she did it, but introspectively she knows what she did was wrong, and she can't hide from herself. that's my take, anyway. | |

| All the interpretations above are not quite close to what I believe. I have a reasonable and approcable sense of this song lyrically, while the music is just phenominal. In a general sense, the song is about guilt, not romance, homosexuality, or hunger (ham :P). It did take me awhile to realize this, but it becomes verrry obvious when you do. Lets go a little deeper: This guy, john, is in a store and wants to shoplift a laser-pen or something. He talking to someone or even no one, asking him, "stop me from doing this!" In order words, he feels extremely tempted to steal the laserpen, and doesn't have enough self-control over his 'id.' The second stanza is simply that he can't control himself and decides to steal the pen. 'Serve it up, I'll do it" After a long musical interlude, he comes out desperately, "OMG, why can't I control myself?! I am such a fool. "Homespun," if any of your guys have even spent half a minute to look up, means something homemade or produced by one person. This guilt, john feels, is created by himself. Now, he even though he gets his laser-pen, he cannot get over the guilt of commiting the crime. Finnaly, my favorite line is the last. The way the music flows into it and his voice..o...so well polished. It says, even though John didn't get caught stealing that laser-pen, there is always a sense of interal guilt in himself. What music and meaning, I love this song! | |

| i think this is close to being Interpol's best song, in terms of musicianship. Just listening to it is glory...reminds me so much of The Cure's "Plainsong"....Interpol at their very best. | |

| i like vends but it begs the question: why would banks write a song about being a lonely homemaker? I think that he had an affair with a married homemaker and this is how the homemaker felt | |
