Song: Heinrich Maneuver (Live Edition)
Tabbed by: Keneticshark24/Silentcrisis
Notes: This tab was produced entirely from the live clip, so the tab will
not be exact. The audio quality is poor, and this is what I could make
out to the best of my ability. I will be adding to this as I figure out
more parts to the song, and as such, feedback will most definetely be
appreciated.
Thanks, and enjoy. A relatively simple song which features similar notes
to Slow Hands.

| I suspect this is about Paul Banks' real ex - most probably an actress from California, from the clues littered in the lyrics. As with most break-ups, he definitely still has feelings for his ex, and battling the confusion he feels. On one hand, he still remembers how good it was with her, how looking into her eyes makes him feel ('move heaven behind those eyes') and the recurring mention of the 'shoes' could be symbolic of a memory between them (those who have watched the movie Wicker Park would understand how a pair of shoes came to be a huge symbol for the main couple, as it was how they got together.) On the other hand, he still remembers why they broke up in the first place and why he applied the 'brakes' to their relationship, although in the end he feels lonely and still misses her. It's the classic scenario of wanting the familiar and the comforting, because he's scared of change and he's scared of ending up alone, but at the same time, he knows falling back into their old relationship will open those wounds again and possibly cause even more. In short, he knows they shouldn't be together again, but he's torn as he looks at her and thinks of her. But he knows he's now got a shot at a new beginning, a new girl whoever she may be, and he wants his ex to know this, in a possible attempt to spite her/spurn her - at one point, who didn't want to do that to our exes? Ha. All in all, a really marvellous song that speaks of how we can never really be completely cold because, to borrow a line from their song 'Leif Erikson', "all the people that you've loved, they're all bound to leave some keepsakes." So this song is probably an ode to the transition period between him missing her immensely, and him deciding to move on. | |

| Interpol. Good every time. They are incapable of writing a truly horrible song. The meaning, well...you have the female, the actress, living on the west coast, trying to make a name for herself and in the process begins to grow fake as she gets a little fame, but she still "tries" to be faithful to her best (perhaps?) friend who lives on the other side of the country who is in some kind of love or like with her, he hears about her from her mother or cousin or something like that, he even sends her gifts from time to time, then he visits saving up all his money to get a beat up car to travel to see her, he forces the gift on her which is something she must don outwardly so he can get that little "Look what I've done hrrh hrrh" feeling and wants everyone to see him with her, she doesn't seem to happy about it-but she likes his attention and probably tells him quixotic things she doesn't mean, but he's not fully buying it, but his heart wants to, but knows the truth nonetheless, and he finally realizes what has happened between them and how negative she has grown to be so he finally decides to do something for his nerdy ole self, and as she tries do that "no don't!" he asks for his own space to experience some gratification for himself instead of worrying about her needs, but of course he's still hurting, but from now on, he's going to keep on telling her that he's not going to be her lackey anymore. Run-On Sentence power. | |

| its a minor point but i think the line is "Well I've got a chance for a sweet SANE life", rather than "Well I've got a chance for a sweet SAINT life". Best Songs on this album have got to be: The Heinrich Maneuver, Pioneer to the Fall and, Pace is the trick. | |

| The "shoes" reference obviously alludes to "if the shoe fits". Being an actress, as is referenced in several ways, one must adapt to change, even becoming the change | |

| This song is killer! Interpol are fucking amazing, the twangy riffs, the phat bass lines, the choppy drums. SO fucking good A band good for so many things - general hapiness, euphoria, gettin baked, romantic moments; relating to intimate relationships, SOBER reflective thinking, relieving stress with ciggarettes, smackin out, coming down after a nice dosage of MDMA, inspiration, lyrical analysis. I could go on for days! What i love about this band is how they just keep EVERYONE guessing, and even better- even though you could be relating to something completely irrelevant to whatever song they make. It just makes you FEEL as if its perfect for whatever you're going through THANK YOU Interpol | |

| well well. this is a beautiful and powerful piece of music and words but as always with Banks the words he uses are such opac and original poetic lines that it ends up evoquing many many things, it can easiy go astray in the end meaning absolutely everything and anything.. lol but still if you isolate parts of the lyrics you can sometimes get a clearer idea. in this one I sense this is about what goes on in the head of a man (in this case anyway) a man who fights its bitterness and the love left in him after the failing of a love affair. being at a special moment obviously not completely over it, he thinks about that girl now far far away. picturing her well or at least assuming she's fine 'you wear those shoes like a dove' goin away easily and straight towards her own new life. the words and questions he adresses are all pretty full of tension, at the same time he seems to have mixed feelings overwhelmed by the feelings he has, his heart swinging and giving him some uncontralable inside although he denies it (my god) at the end as he's saying the last lines in the song he can't seem to not give away his great need for her and his dreams about a reconsiliation. | |

| I cannot listen to this song the same way after seeing the video... which is absolutely amazing. When I see the video, the lyrics at the end sound like "I've got a chance for a sweet sane life" which totally makes sense in the context of a woman walking into the path of a fast-moving bus. We all have a chance for a sweet sane life, but sometimes the odds are against us and things go crazy. We walk into the path of buses or see people do it and our lives are never the same. That's a lonely ride indeed. | |

| Interpol is originally from NY. The whole 'west coast' thing may be something made up to establish that this girl is very much apart from him now (probably an ex as stated by electriceel01), or a real girl he met on tour or something. 'Oh and move heaven behind those eyes...' either he's allowing this girl to cause him to lose sight of heaven (aka sin), or simply the singer wanted to add something to round out the verse, in which case her eyes are at least equal in value to heaven. He must have at one point loved this girl, or really hated her, because he breaks his resolution and his 'heart swings'. The title is similar to interpol's 'c'mere' which is a play on the words 'come here'. It may simply be something creative to play on the 'heimlich manuever'. Which is sort of an unsolicited kiss. (I remember a movie in which a kid fakes drowning to have a hot lifegaurd perform this on him, he may be using the same one-sided selfish trickery to gain sex) 'Heinrich Maneuver' also sounds alot like a tactic lol. To me 'You wear those shoes like a dove' suggests she's the prey to his 'Heinrich Maneuver'. He asks a general question 'How are things on the West Coast?' then switches over to 'Hear you movin' real fine tonight' which sounds like he's quickly changing the topic to more intresting things to him (getting laid). 'But I don't want to take your heart And I don't want a piece of history No I don't want to read your thoughts anymore' He doesn't want to talk anymore (just sex) ;) 'My God...' (lust) 'You wear those shoes, I decide Oh strut those shoes,' (he exercises a commanding air over her. 'Say it...' (command) 'Let it come...' (command let my spell work on you) 'I said I've got a dance and you'll do just fine I said I've got a dance, it moves into the night' (I has to have sex NAO) 'Well I've got a plan, look forward in my eyes' (let my spell work on you) | |
