you know ive never thought about it like that but you might have a point with atleast some of the song being about his penis if you think about the lyrics especially the 1st verse it strikes me very much of masturbation

paul banks said he would never reveal the meaning of this song i have no idea what it means, maybe there is no measure of how much love you can give

I think the meaning of this song depends on the way YOU interpret it. Everyone is going to have a different interpretation depending on how they feel about it, and i think most of Interpol's songs are like this. The meanings are not very clear, bu once you overanalyze, you kinda get the clue about the meaning.... thats the beauty of Interpol

I wonder why he always makes up his songs? I mean, that's a silly thing to say. I mean, why he feels he gets a better song by not writing what he knows? Maybe this song has the answer. The public contain the vicious breed that prey on celebrity spouses. I like that he claims he feels timeless, and can only observe the length of their relationship as if it's an actual physical length, like a creeper. Reminds me of the opening lines of Take you on a cruise - "i'm timeless like a broken watch".

This is one of that "personal" songs that really come out directly of your heart and you don't want to tell everyone what inspired you to write it cause it totally screws it for you. Pikka Bird: your essay is pretty good, pretty long too =p I have to admit that, but like most love songs it can mean something totally different to someone else so no one will know what paul was thinking of when he wrote it but he gave us an amazing song to enjoy =)

combat salacious removal = fight against the loss of sexual desire that sometimes happens in long term relatiohships "I've had no sense of time since we started this thing out" = long-term relationship "We want strong summer love, the most robust of blood Just to stay awake" = they want to keep the strong sexual attraction, the good sex, to keep things hot and exciting between them i fucking love this song.

Yeah, I know how it goes. I didn't even mean for it to be that long, but it just started snowballing (not in the porn sense of the word). Also, I'm totally right about what I said above, and don't you try to deny it! :p

I was pretty sure that it was actually "complex"... and if it was, well. Then the song would have a completely different meaning. If it is combat then. It would mean that he's trying to stop the loss of his lustful feelings? I've always thought this song was about him meeting this girl that he'd known before, and he fell in love with her, basically, from day one. However, he had some old ties "There is a bitter breed. Oh sweetheart. They will be watching you sometimes. With their bitter hearts." He is going to have a hard time eliminating all these old ties, and the process is going to cause some troubles. "But we went through with these Oh we're shifting the heartache We want strong summer love that must roam washed up blood Just to stay away" I think this is his way of saying that these other girls have fucked him over in the past, and he's excited to break their heart in return: "Shift the heartache". He wants a strong "summer" (meaning they can spend a lot of time together) love that must "roam washed up blood just to stay away". That line, I don't quite understand.

I'm not too sure I like this song very much...maybe I just have to listen to it more. The rest of the album is fantastic though :)

It's also my favorite song off Antics. It seems it's not one of the most popular ones though. I think the lyrics aren't too obscure: it's about how far someone can go for love. He went too far and he has to get bnacl to "his friends in need". The "complex salacious removal" is him saying no to sex. The second verse about about wanting "strong summer love", something that he sees in teenagers maybe?
