| When it says 'New York cares' it also says in the background 'got to be some more change in my life' or something close to that. I figured that the NY cares part isn't serious. He says the subway is a porno and the pavements are a mess- everything is dirty, cheap and impersonal. He is tired of it, he is tired of the situation he is in, and decides to change it: It's up to me now. He is going to bring light into the darkness. I do see how they are similar to Joy division, but I think they are more positive, which is nice. | |

| i think this song is about the "dirtiness" of old New York City and Time's Square being infested with sex shops and prostitution. By saying Turn on the Bright Lights, they are referencing Time's Square now. | |

| i think this song is about being supported by someone for a long time and now they're depressed and it's up to the person to support her/him. (its up to me now, turn on the bright lights) thats my point of view. interpol IS a great band. their music is so depressing. not like "hey i hate myself" depressing, but more like a "empty-airport" depressing. where you feel so alone. it's crazy.. | |

| i agree being high does enchance the song! i think it has to do with the subways and the nasty stuff going on down there when he says "I know you've supported me for a long time Somehow I'm not impressed" he might be talking about the beggars who are there everyday and take your money but still want more day after day for food/drugs. 1 2 3 Next | |

| To understant Interpol, you have to be really high and/or tripping (mushroom tea is most effective). Interpol contrasts their lyrics and their music. The lyrics tend to be "depressing" of sorts, but the music emphasizes the internal beauty of life. The whole CD takes you on a ride. This particular song is very moving. The lyrics are a bit sad in the beginning("I'm sick of spending these lonely nights training myself not to care"). I think its about thinking you've reached something in your life, only to figure out that you don't like what you've reached at all. Then you're just stuck with a dirty subway. The speaker goes through it in his mind, and realizes that he has to achieve something better, or take his life in a new direction. This epiphany is represented in the beautiful music solo, and then the lyrics "It's up to me now turn on the bright lights ". I think this is one of the easiest song on the CD to understand. The others are much more difficult and open to interpretation. | |

| As I see it, this is just a great ode/tribute to the city these guys call home. Describing the subway as a porno to me just means that it's filthy, same with the pavements, and even then, the writer gets around to loving his city, no matter the dirtyness of certain aspects found in NY. The city has made Interpol who they are, they captured their fanbase there, they grew up there, they live there. And at the end, the moment of realization...You've supported us long enough, now turn on the lights, it's time we handle our business and make you (NYC) proud. | |

| this song is great indeed for a great band. in fact, the whole cd is just excellent! well ive heard different when there in concert. ive heard that they are boring and dont do much..just play. you know how somebands get into it. im not to sure,i havent seen them live yet! | |
