I think it's pretty obvious that this song is about his girl getting knocked up behind his back. Cheating on him basically. "Just spare me the suspense" "You're late, babe you know it's your time" - She's pregnant. "So cold in the pitch night" - He wants to be brought into the light. She hasn't told him, obviously. "Alone you can't make amends" - You can't fix things on your own, including what you've done. "When you played your heart out You made me turn around" - After she played with his heart, he finally opened his eyes. I don't know, I like to believe it's about her cheating on him. Oh and isn't it "You say that we sent black lies, do you know?"

btw when paul goes "ooooh right on" my girl parts tingle. and the chorus is so hateful and passionate, definitely not typical interpol. they usuallly tend to be pretty detached but there is really a sense of rage in this. i love it. his singing has improved so much. rehab did him good

I didn't much care for this song when I first heard it but after listening to the album nonstop for 7 days, it's grown to be one of my favorite songs on the album. I love the strong sense of emotion and anger in this song. It's touching.

I like the knocked-up idea. From now on, that's how I'm going to think of it. :) "You're late" "Spare me the suspense" "Aching daddies" "We should dance like two fucking twins." If it's true, they should be celebrating. Don't understand the significance of a pawn shop, though.

It could be about the devil's who's waiting for the girl to end her own life so he can take her with him. 1

Not particularly a reference. They did to revisit lyrical themes a lot. See how many times you can find mention of weights in Antics, or how many songs they have about the sea. Reuse of the number seven is comparatively inconsequential.

"There are seven ancient pawn shops along the road and the seven aching daddies you may want to know" Anyone else think this a reference to NYC's "I had seven faces, never knew which one to wear..."?

haven't really examined this song but the first thing that came to mind for me is that he's waiting for this girl to tell him that she's knocked up. Like he suspects she's knocked up coz it's her 'time' but she's 'late'. He says he won't leave her alone in the 'pitch [black] night' but she has to tell him coz he can't stand the suspense. haha i dunno.

Nah, it's not the first song. "Bitch slap Maybelline" is one example. This song doesn't capture me right away...perhaps it needs more time.

i think this is about cheating possibly. i am really fond of that knocked up idea though. or like infidelity or loss of loyalty of some sort. and i do think the seven faces can possibly be a reference to NYC. seven sides of him and whichever side he looks at his situation from, they all feel the same?

I also thought it was interesting that he swore so much in this song, though when I first heard them I thought he swore more (because the first song I heard was Specialist). Little did I know this wasn't the norm.

I think it's about a boy telling a girl his feelings. The girl doesn't know if they should be just friends or lovers... So she is in "suspense". The boy is sure that he loves her. He is full of energy for it, tries to convince the girl into a love-relationship."you know it's time" He wants a definite answer"spare me the suspense" He already thinks that they are late for a love-relationship at the end "wait until you know it's time": he gets awared the upcoming no-answer and doesn't want to lose hope. so he says desperatly she can keep him in suspense and wait till she is sure.

I think these lyrics are wrong after listening to the album with headphones.. I think these are closer. Spare me the suspense Spare me the suspense I got no currency, but I'm heaven sent So spare me the suspense Just spare me the suspense Hey lady wait, oh, I so hope you try You're late, babe you know it's your time And I won't let you sit by So cold in the pitch Night, alone You can't make amends No I won't let you sit by So cold in the pitch Now we should dance like two fucking twins Just spare me the suspense There are seven ancient pawn shops along the road And the seven aching daddies you may want to know Oooh, right on Hey lady rain, oh baby I can't deny I got a taste, a taste, a taste and it's time But I won’t let you sit by So cold in the pitch Night, alone You can’t make amends No, I won’t let you sit by So cold in the pitch Now it’s enough with this fucking incense Just spare me the suspense There are seven ancient pawn shops along the road Oh I know seven aging daddies you may want to know When you played your heart out It made me turn around Oooh, right on Wait, and you froze in the night You're late, there's a hole in the sky No haste, no lesson, no lie Got a taste that I can't deny

he swears in the live version of a few songs on the black album too this song does sound like the knocked up idea maybe that shes cheating and she thinks that he'll leave her if she tells him but hes gonna stay with her "But I won’t let you sit by So cold in the pitch night Alone you can’t make amends" saying hes gonna help even if it isnt his
