Do you remember when we first met
I sure do
It was some time
In early September
Though you were lazy about it
You made me wait around
I was so crazy about you
I didn't mind
So I was late for class
I looked my bike to yours
It wasn't hard to find
Your painted flowers oh
Guess that I was afraid
That if you rode away
You might not roll back
My direction real soon
Chorus
A
Well I was crazy about you then
And now the craziest thing of all
Bm D*
Over 10 years have gone by
F#Gbm
And your still mine
Locked in time
Lets rewind
A,G,Fm,A*
Verse
Do you remember
When we first moved in together
The piano took up the living room
You'd play me boogie woogie
I played you love songs
You'd say we're playing house
Now you still say we are
We build our get away
Up in a tree we found
We felt so far away
Though we were still in town
I remember watching
That old tree burn down
I took a picture that
I don't like to look at
Chorus
A
Well all these times
They come and go
Along don't seem so long
Bm D*
Over 10 years have gone by
F#Gbm
We cant rewind
We're looked in time
But your still mine
A,G,Fm,A* (pick A string on each chord)
(start of the verse tab)
Do you remember
Cheers, Dan

Well what chiquita08 said got me thinking and i think he might be right, but my reasoning is different. I think what has happened is that he feels this girl is his true love in life and once upon a time they were together and even moved in together. Since then though they have split up and Jack is still upset and still dwelling on it. He says "well all these times they come and go" referring to the fragmented memories he describes in the song of the fun times they spent together. I say fragmented because i think the bit about the tree happened when they were kids, not after they moved in together. Also when you do look back on an ex relationship this is how your memories tend to be (well mine are anyway). I think the last bit supports this and is what makes this song saddest, he knows he can't rewind time and go back and make things right with this girl, we are locked in time and cannot go back into the past or see the future except as time takes us. But what is the sadder bit is that she promised him that she would be his forever and he has taken it literally, hence the "you're still mine", and the final lingering question "Do you remember?", as he, ten years after they broke up, still struggles to understand why she isn't with him.

I am intrigued by this metaphor talk but in the end, jack is pretty straight forward in most of his songs. And lets face it, this is one of the best love songs ever written. jack is just so personal. Every artist kinda lets us into their feelings but he lets us into his BEING. I love that about jack.

I might be wrong, but I feel comfortable thinking that this song is as straightforward as it seems. I like thinking that this is a love song with a happy ending instead of what chiquita08 was saying, although they may be right as well. This song goes down as one of my all time favorites. "Do you remember when we first moved in together The piano took up the living room" I love that. I don't know why, but that part just jumped out at me the first time I heard this.

jack johnson loves metaphors...this song is actually quite sad even though it sounds happy and like they are both still in love with eachother... its about unrequited love So I was late for class, I locked my bike to yours It wasn’t hard to find, you painted flowers on it I guess that I was afraid that if you rolled away You might not roll back my direction real soon - thats my favorite part, its sweet in a way i guess...well he locked his bike to hers actually means he was kinda posessive and scared of loosing her. hes always been crazy about this girl, but she didnt take everything so seriously.. The piano took up the living room You played me boogie-woogie I played you love songs You’d say we’re playing house now you still say we are ... the piano is an important part as it took up the whole living room... he would play her love songs and she would play him silly songs, shes not taken anything that seriously... they live together but isnt as serious as he was, her saying that they "play house" We built our getaway up in a tree we found We felt so far away but we were still in town Now I remember watching that old tree burn down I took a picture that I don’t like to look at ... the girl's playing around again, this time with a tree house, and the tree burnt down... he hates looking at the picture of it because it reminds him that they arent together anymore.. Well all these times they come and go And alone don’t seem so long Over ten years have gone by We can’t rewind, we’re locked in time But you’re still mine Do you remember? - he's in denial about the whole thing, they arent together anymore, except in the past.. they cant rewind, they are locked in time.. in his head she is still his even though its been such a long time.

I like this song very much. The lyrics are very good and emotive and, when I listen to the music, I remembber about that juvenile passion which normally affects teenagers... It's so magic! So intense! And, at the same time, it also expresses a sad feeling. It's simply amazing!

You played me boogie-woogie I played you love songs You’d say we’re playing house now you still say we are Such a perfect picture of love. Reminds me of two kids playing together and their friendship from childhood "playing house" blooms into a mature age as they grow older but somehow they are "still playing hosue" because as much that ahs changed so much has stayed the same " we're lock in time and you're still mine" I love this song.

Maybe this might ease some of your minds about the whole "are they together or not" talk. Jack said this about this song when interviewed about the album: "Do You Remember was one that for some reason just popped in my head all of a sudden. I was driving one day, and had this little riff going on in my head. After that, the song just wrote itself pretty quick. It's just a simple love song with some personal moments I wasn't afraid to share. Just kind of silly things like me locking my bike to my wife's - who wasn't even my girlfriend back then, but just this girl I was trying to get - so she couldn't ride off after class. It's just stuff I thought might make people laugh and feel good. It's kind of like Bubble Toes, Part 2." 1 2 Next

I absolutely love this song...besides the obvious songs on this cd, this is my favorite. Just hearing the words, "so i was late for class, i locked my bike to yours, it wasnt hard to find, you painted flowers on it...." I go to UCSB that is what everyone does, its a great song, especially if you can picture exactly what he is writing about. Not that im ever late to class.

might just be my favorite JJ song of all time. i must say, caudex completely opened my eyes up to what this song means. i have no idea how i couldnt have caught that they are no longer together after reading your explanation. it really is a very pleasant song, but nice to the ears....this is a song that i will always remember, and am glad i can play it on the guitar to remind myself of my late teens

Awwwww!! This song is so sweet! It talks about how he met his true love, and all of the times they spent together, and how they're still together. I think it's so sweet that he wrote a song about her.. I wish someone would write a song like that for me..ahhh..Its so sweet!

That One Guy

This one goes out to the comment from chiquita08... Yes the song does have a kind of sappy context, but I don't feel that the sadness he feels is from "unreqited love". He is sad because they are getting older if anything. What he still is holding on to is after ten years it still feels like it did when they were kids. The piano analogy shows how they can both be themselves around eachother and not worry about boogie woogie(which doesn't necasarilly mean "silly songs", just her own personal style) or love songs that may be laughed at if played in front of others. They didn't care. Playing house was just stating that it still felt like they were kids and proposes that they had fun together. Life wasn't stressful together. Now we move on to the treehouse...the significance of the tree was that it was there spot and again made them go back to their youth. Just like kids, they could go somewhere 2 blocks away and suddenly they're on the moon. Seeing it burn down just hurts him because he sees not only his memories being destroyed, but his youthful life. Finally, over the course of the last chorus he switches up the phrase (and read carefully...) "We can't rewind, we're locked in time"-let me pause and say that here is a prime example of missing the past, not the girl and here's why if you notice the last part of the short phrase..."BUT YOU'RE STILL MINE!!!! They are still together!!! He finishes up with "Do you remember" because that is all he has left, memories. Now, sure that sounds like there may be a chance they are not together, but if you listen to the song, he ends the song as if he were starting it up with the D showing that nothing is over and that they are just getting started with the rest of their lives together. Besides of course they're together because just as Jack put it at the beginning of "In Between Dreams", they are "Better Together".
