I think its about how time just flies past... you see something there but you were to late... you missed it... had the chance and you blew it... times when you screw up life... thats what I think

he says at the beginning of one of the live recordings of this song that it's about all of the american flags on cars. take what you will from that, but in simpler terms, there have always been these things that we're just beginning to notice now that we're at war with another nation. :-/

Jack was referring to America and what sort of happened following 9/11. He's what he said about this song in an interview. His own words: "A song like “Times Like These” is about as literal as I like to get. When it comes to the part that says, “those for peace and those for war, God bless these ones, not those ones, but these ones have made times like these” – basically, I was thinking of Hiroshima. Just after September 11, you started seeing “God Bless America” everywhere you look, and for a second it’s understandable. Maybe you even need a little extra blessing when something like that happens. And then it just starts to get carried away. How could it happen that we drop a bomb on, what is it, 200,000 innocent people? It’s just trying to say, “Remember, in the name of our country, horrible things have happened in the past, too.”

I don't think this song is about anything specific. It's more just about the rhythm of life and how everything is always changing but overall nothing is ever really different. Beautiful lyrics, beautiful voice. Jack is amazing.

i downloaded this song the other day and its a live version, and at the begining he explains how he just wrote it and what not and then he goes on saying "its sorta about all the flags on cars" so maybe its about 9/11 and and just being patriotic. or maybe not cause i have no idea when he wrote.

The song was written after 9-11 and it is just about life moving on. No matter how hard things get, life will always move on. This is the song that we picked for my class graduation.

when he said it was about the flags on cars he meant that everyone in America, especially after 9/11 has been a little bit selfish. It is understandable to want God to Bless America after something like that, but God has blessed America alot more than most countries around the world. Believe it or not there have been alot worse things that have happened. It is important to see everyone as an equal, their problems are as relevant as yours.

it's an awesome song, but it's about war. from the mouth of jack johnson himself- he wrote it right after september 11 happened and everyone was saying god bless america and he wanted to write a god bless everything song. i think that's so cool. it's a love song and a song about people who need to just stop being so nationalistic. god doesn't like you better if you're american or french. life just keeps going and "there's always been laughing, crying, birth, and dying."
