The chords are Bb - Gm (verse), then Cm - Ab (chorus).
Play them thus:

In fact, the Gm is more of a Gm7 that resolves to Gm (in tune with the
la-la-la-la-las), but it's a pig to play that and sing the words (which don't
really scan properly) at the same time, so I don't bother. It sounds okay.

| Lights going out and a kick in the balls - refers to a night when The Jam were playing with the Sex Pistols. Apparently Sid Vicious turned off the lights during The Jam's set and Paul Weller kicked him in the balls for doing it. | |

| None of Weller's examples were meant to be taken as entertainment-- he is obviously being sarcastic. He is describing the dire conditions of lower class life and what a sorry state it is when police sirens, the smell of petrol, the sounds of a burglary in progress, etc. are your chief form of entertainment. And I believe the lyric is "and the kicking of balls", not "a kick in the balls". 1 | |

| Generally consdiered a true story - Weller coming home pissed and writing this in 10 minutes. It is has been my favourite Jam track over two decades now, although I can't make up mind wether it's genuine brilliance or simply writing down those routine observations that most people leaving in Britain day in day out, as such similarities with Town Called Malice. Feeding ducks in the park and wishing you far away is pretty routine. Cuddling a warm girl and smelling stale perfume.... nah, its a classic and genuinely brilliant. just convinced myslef :) | |
