Tommy James (born Thomas Gregory Jackson on April 29, 1947 in Dayton, Ohio) is an American pop-rock musician and singer.
James grew up in Niles, Michigan, which he still regards as his hometown. He founded and was the lead singer of the popular 1960s band Tommy James & the Shondells, best known for their 1968 hit " Crimson and Clover." Other hits included: "Hanky Panky," "Its Only Love," "I Think We're Alone Now," "Mirage," "Out Of The Blue," "Crystal Blue Persuasion," "Sweet Cherry Wine," "Mony Mony," and "She." After the breakup of The Shondells he had a moderately successful solo career, including the 1971 hit single " Draggin' The Line."
In 1991, "Draggin' The Line" was covered by the band Beat Goes Bang. In 1999, "Draggin' The Line" was covered by R.E.M., "Crimson and Clover" by Elijah Blue Allman and Cher, and "Crystal Blue Persuasion" by Morcheeba.
