It seems to me that it's about Blunt's attempts to become successful, say at some form of open mic night. "He'll judge me by the fact that my face don't fit"

this is my interpretation of this song: "Judging by the look on the organ-grinder, He'll judge me by the fact that my face don't fit." James used a masculine term "he" to refer to the world! "organ-grinder" is a medical term for our mouth... b/c that's how we chew food (different organisms). Next line refers to our face/looks more directory where he said, his face will be judged b/c it doesn't fit. James is referring to the world... how this world only worship beautiful people. "It's touching that the monkey sits on my shoulder. He's waiting for the day when he gets me," It's hurting James b/c people he WANTS around him isn't around him anymore... but the monkey (a friend in eastern culture) hasn't betrayed him yet. He feels the people who singled him out, people who labeled him and left also wants to prove their point. They are waiting and looking at the monkey... they are waiting for the monkey to get him too. "But I don't need no alibi - I'm a puppet on a string. I just need this stage to be seen." This is where he is defending himself in a rebellious manner... he doesn't need an alibi because of his looks. He is just like all of us... a product of the system. And he wants SOMEONE (the one he likes) to see his situation... his current stage. "We all need a pantomime to remind us what is real. Hold my eye and know what it means." He is disgusted at the rest of the beautiful world... b/c it needs dramas, fictions, lies, an actor to show what's real. but James can't do those... he wants his lover to look at his eyes and see how deep is his love.... "Out Of My Mind" These hypocrisies are making him crazy... "But I won't be your concubine - I'm a puppet not a whore. I just need this stage to be seen." He refuses to move on even she has moved on... b/c he is so much in love w/ her. He wants his lover to see he isn't a whore... he can't make love like a concubine or a whore. He can only make love to someone who has his heart... his heart refuses to move on. "Won't you be a friend of mine to remind me what is real? Hold my heart and see that it bleeds." He is asking the world to be his friend.. to comfort him, comfort his pain. He wants rest of the world to tell him he isn't insane... He wants them to see he has a heart although his face doesn't fit... and his heart's bleeding.

to me this song is about life in general plus the comfort friendship can offer-- the first part of the verse is about the world's reactions to someone. apparent judgement, attempts to fool, and so on... and the claim that he's just a "puppet on a string" seems like he likes to blame his problems on situational factors, like we all do. "We all need a pantomime to remind us what is real. Hold my eye and know what it means" says we all need human drama to remind us of what is real- our perception of what basic human life means. he entreats someone to 'hold his eye' (see from his point of view) 'and know what it means' (and understand him). chorus "i'm out of my mind" restates how everyone feels once in a while-- totally alone, out of it, and far from normal. second verse repeats the feeling of being manipulated by everything around you. "i'm a puppet not a whore"-- he allows himself to be a product of his surroundings, to a point. there's an absolutist in all of us! "Won't you be a friend of mine to remind me what is real? Hold my heart and see that it bleeds." he's probably written this about one (or a few) of his closest friends-- somebody he trusts entirely, someone who can 'remind him what is real'. someone he can whine to, too (hold my heart and see it bleeds).

I think I've got it! It seemed so abstract to me at first. I decided to dive into the lyrcis and to see what I have found. I started by evaluating the events he is describing. It all seems frozen in time. It's not a journey that developes over time so much as it is a transcendent moment. He seems to frequently describe such moments. After all, the song "beautiful" is about one moment where he saw an ex-girlfriend while walking by. Since it is written in free verse, with rhyme used looselyin most places and sparingly when it is strong, it occurred to me that the rhyme was used for a reason. The words he is saying in strong rhyme are all tongue-in cheek. This makes them sound very trite and shallow, which they are intended to be. He's saying, "Nothing's wrong, nothing changes...etc." The rest of the song is in his true voice, not some robotic rhyme. I started to set the scene he is describing. He is on stage. He doesn't fit in with the crowd or the surroundings. There is an organ-grinder and monkey present, who apparently do fit in. This could only mean that the surroundings are very cheesy and fake. It's a puppet show of some sort, and James Blunt is the puppet. The organ griner's monkey is sitting on his shoulder, and he finds it touching. The organ grinder is waiting to "get" James in some fashion. Now that we have set the scene, we can delve further (or farther?) into the song. James says that his pantomime performance helps everyone know what is real. Now we have to look at his situation to see if we can draw the meaning from all the undefined variables still floating around. The organ-grinder sets the beat that he dances or performs to, and may well represent the music industry, churning out music without any art to it whatsoever. The "pet monkey" of the music industry represents the fans of music who simply eat up everything the industry gives them. At this point, though, the monkey is paying attention to James Blunt, sitting on his shoulder. He is currently popular in our culture, and mtv and vh1 currently give him airtime. James Blunt is a real musician, one with messages he clearly intends to get across in order to help other people "know what is real". He says that he may be a puppet for the world, but he is not bound to it, and he doesn't give his entire being to it to be violated - thus, "I won't be your concubine. I'm a puppet, not a whore." He explains that he just needs to be on stage and in thsi show so that he can be seen. He is sacrificing his will in order to get his message through to the world. He asks the person he is directing this at to do several things: 1) "Hold my eye and know what it means." This is James' way of saying to see as he sees; to look through his eyes at this crazy situation. 2) "Will you be a friend of mine to remind me what is real?" This seems obvious enough. 3) "Hold my heart and see that it bleeds." Here he is saying that it pains him to do what he is doing. He is being vulnerable, and his heart is in someone else's hands. After asking for these things, James tells us that he's out of his mind. He's beating his head against a wall, trying to get through to the world, and it's driving him crazy. That's the point that he draws to.

When I was in concert and he was singing this song it was awesome... my favorite song to begin with. it was really quite funny cause he made the audience do the dada dadaduhdaduh part over and over again, and then he kept just radomly throwing in "I'm out of my mi-nd" with his eyes all bugged out and creepy smile on, like he really was out of his mind. but anyways, in the concert at the end he kept repeating "I don't know what it means" or "even I don't know what it means" or somthing along those lines. Which is making reference to the song telling you to "hold his eye and see what it means". I thought i should post it, cause it kinda puts a spin on to it. That maybe he doesn't know where his life is heading, or why the music industry is treating him like this. It almost leaves it open to speculation, like if he doesn't know then who does? you know. Or that he is out of his mind and really doesn't want to think at all anymore. I dunno, just thought that it was interesting that he sang that in concert! 1

I think this is close to being the best on the album. I think this can be interpreted in various way depending on the person. But heres what i get out of it, probably totally off target but it makes sense to me, hehe. “Judging by the look on the organ-grinder, He'll judge me by the fact that my face don't fit. It's touching that the monkey sits on my shoulder. He's waiting for the day when he gets me. But I don't need no alibi - I'm a puppet on a string,” [He is referring to life in general as being a performance, some people are the controllers (organ-grinder and the monkey) and some the puppets. Someone has control over a situation where he feels he does not fit in or does not like, and although they seem protecting of his best interests he is merely a “puppet on a string” in their hands. He can’t really justify what he is doing in life as it is not what he himself truly wants to do.] "I just need this stage to be seen." [He is sick of being judged for something that isn’t really him.] "We all need a pantomime to remind us what is real" [Being told what is real by someone can be misleading, we need something more solid than words of others to guide us – there is more to life than what we are told to be believe in.] "I'm out of my mind." [He feels like he’s “out of his mind” as nothing seems real to him anymore, life is just a performance to fit in with society.] "But I won't be your concubine - I'm a puppet not a whore." [concubine refers to the state of a couple living together as lovers with no permanent obligation, so this makes me think that he feels like he’s being used by someone or something, I’m a puppet not a whore – A puppet is something that brings happiness however holds a reputable face, a whore is someone looked down upon despite being vital part of life.] "Won't you be a friend of mine to remind me what is real?" [He is in search of a real friend to guide him, someone who is out for his best interests and not their own.] "Hold my heart and see that it bleeds." ["It bleeds" maybe referring to fact that he is alive and is more than just a puppet to do as one pleases]

I'm trying to pick the words apart and read this from the inside out. I feel like his message is so simple, but just beyond my grasp at the moment. I think I'm just going to get in better reading shape before I come back to this, and try again to read into what he means.

hmm LooseTongue, i soo see how you might think that he's singing, '...I'm outta of my mind GIRL...', i thoughthat at first too, but i think it's just how he sings "mind" the first time, with a lift at the end, like "mind-ah"
