JAMES BLUNT LYRICS
"Out Of My Mind"
CAPO 5TH FRET
verse 1:
Dm E7
Judging by the look on the organ-grinder,
Am7 Fmaj7
He'll judge me by the fact that my face don't fit.
Dm E7
It's touching that the monkey sits on my shoulder.
Am7 Fmaj7
He's waiting for the day when he gets me,
Pre-Chorus 1:
C Em7 Am7 Fmaj7
But I don't need no alibi - I'm a puppet on a string.
C Em7 Am7 Fmaj7
I just need this stage to be seen.
C Em7 Am7 Fmaj7
We all need a pantomime to remind us what is real.
C Em7 Am7 Fmaj7
Hold my eye and know what it means.
Chorus:
Dm Fmaj7
I'm out of my min-d
C Em
I'm out of my mind
Verse 2:
Dm E7
Judging by the look on the organ-grinder,
Am7 Fmaj7
He'll judge me by the fact that my face don't fit.
Dm E7
It's touching that the monkey sits on my shoulder.
Am7 Fmaj7
He's waiting for the day when he gets me,
Pre-Chorus 2:
C Em7 Am7 Fmaj7
But I won't be your concubine - I'm a puppet not a whore.
C Em7 Am7 Fmaj7
I just need this stage to be seen.
C Em7 Am7 Fmaj7
Won't you be a friend of mine to remind me what is real?
C Em7 Am7 Fmaj7
Hold my heart and see that it bleeds.
Chorus:
Dm Fmaj7
I'm out of my min-d
C Em
I'm out of my mind

| It seems to me that it's about Blunt's attempts to become successful, say at some form of open mic night. "He'll judge me by the fact that my face don't fit" Suggests that he thinks the music critic ("the organ grinder") will dismiss his music because he, although in my opinion is quite attractive, doesn't fall into what is traditionally thought of as popstar attractive. "I just need this stage to be seen." suggests that he knows this particular guy isn't going to be the one to discover him but he's just there because someone else will. "But I won't be your concubine" suggesting that if he is going to get famous or whatever then it'll be on his terms, he won't be a slave for someone else. But then he does go on to say "I'm a puppet not a whore" which kinda contradicts my point so maybe not. I don't know, just my opinion, it's been wrong before just what I thought when I heard it. | |

| Judging by the look on the organ-grinder,- Society. He'll judge me by the fact that my face don't fit.- That he isn't quite there. that he's not quite normal. It's touching that the monkey sits on my shoulder.- No idea. He's waiting for the day when he gets me,-Waiting for the day when he cracks it- suggesting paranoia But I don't need no alibi - I'm a puppet on a string.-I don't need an excuse, I'm here, but not quite here. I just need this stage to be seen- Can some one hear me, see me, let me get noticed. We all need a pantomime to remind us what is real.-We all need a taste of drama, an escape from reality to know what it actually is. Hold my eye and know what it means. See my experiences through my eyes, and understand them. I'm out of my mind.- Society repeats that, and he begins to believe it- bit of a Vietnam veteran thing? Judging by the look on the organ-grinder, He'll judge me by the fact that my face don't fit. It's touching that the monkey sits on my shoulder. He's waiting for the day when he gets me, But I won't be your concubine - I'm a puppet not a whore.- I won't be a someone who you pay for amusement, I've got a few screws loose, but I'm not lowering myself to that level. I just need this stage to be seen.- Can someone see me. Won't you be a friend of mine to remind me what is real?- He needs someone who understands him. Hold my heart and see that it bleeds.- I am human. I may be nuts. but I'm human too. I'm out of my mind. | |

| It does seem to me to be about his career. I've heard that he wrote poetry for a while, and his lyrics also have that kind of style - you have to really take the lyrics apart and search for the meaning. "I won't be your concubine; I'm a puppet, not a whore/ I just need this stage to be seen." Those lines, to me, seem to sum up the general gist of this song - he's prepared to put up with the crap that the music industry puts you through in order to do what he loves, which is to make and perform music. It's sort of a statement that he's going to try not to be changed for the worse by the commercialism and the 'back-stage' politics of music executives - or organ grinders - but that he will use these people as much as they are using him to get what he wants. | |

| perhaps it may be about how he feels he was being treated like "a puppet on a string" in the war? He fealt like he was in a "pantomime" it fealt so unreal. He fealt he was being used, "a concubine", will be made to fight until it's been seen that his "heart bleeds". | |
