I think that "Billy" is the one song by James Blunt that is easy to interpret Most of his lyrics are metaphrical and have hidden meanings, he really is such a clever writter, but i think this song is meant to be taken literally. Billy's had an affair (Once he was a lover sleeping with another), got caught out (Now he's just known as a cheat) and now regrets it (Old doors are closed but he's always open, to relive time in his mind). Simple as! xx

To newdawn: Billy is the prodigal son. In the story, he makes a mess of his life but is still able to come back for forgiveness. billy is too late.

I definatly think this is about joining the military. Billy joins, realizes hes scared, runs away, and now he has no more options. people think hes cheated the country he loved.

"Once he was a lover sleeping with another. Now he's just known as a cheat." "The damage is done...Old doors are closed but he's always open, to relive time in his mind." In my opinion, this song is about a man that cheated on his lover. And now he is regretting it and is forced to relive his mistake over and over in his guilty mind. No one but the writer of the song knows who is really being personified in it.

I agree that the end of the song goes toward he was a cheater, however, the rest of the song can stand alone and be about anyone who has lost a love for any reason (cheating, mutual breakup, etc.). I have more detailed stuff below but I think that the main point of the song is that this is about a man who made a huge mistake and let 'the one' go; by the time he realized this, it was to late to make amends. Now he all he has is a furture of sorry and self torture. (first verse) This is a man (you could put a woman in this but the song obviously refers to a man) who has to start anew "Billy's leaving today". He is ashamed of the choices made "holds his head in disgrace". He realizes he has lost everying "knows the price he has paid". Maybe he made this bad choice out of fear of the futrue and now it is too late to explain "admits its to late to to admit that he's afraid". (Chours) This is basically about a the future "tomorrow comes" which holds nothing but pain and sorrow"sorrow becomes his soulmate". He can not change the past "the damage is done"and now it is too late "the prodigal son is too late" to find help; nothing, not even religion (often times a place people turn when it seems like there is nothing else), can help him. He can not go back to his lover "old doors are closed" although he tortures himself "always open to relive time in his mind" about what he could have done to fix this had he not waited too long. (Second verse) He is wiser than he was "got lines on his face" and knows the he must go through this "accepts his fate" and that it is too late to go back even though he knows he can now "he admits it to late that he was wrong" (they moved on) Basically, I think this is about a man that made a huge mistake and let 'the one' go and by the time he realized this, it was to late to make amends

my first thought and still is, that the songs reference was about a person facing Death Row, And the song is about this persons last thoughts. And of course the regrets that put him in the position that he has no power to change, Wich if given the chance he would change. But as many know. You cant change time. once you make a mistake, Its made! Then maybe im speaking from personal experience..... (And NO, im not sitting on Deaths Row.) lmao

In addition, the part about him being a cheater also goes along with Slaughterhouse-Five. While on the planet Tralfamadore, he has an affair with the famous actress also on the planet. Anyone agree?

I'm starting to see a trend. I'm thinking its about war. Billy went off to war and later he regrets it. It seems a little too depressing to be about debt. But why on earth would it be about bill clinton if he's in london? And I agree that now that he's on Vh1 it's a little over kill. But oh well. Most people who saw him on there haven't even heard of him except for one song (You're Beautiful). So I think its safe to say that most people will be getting over him quickly except for real fans!
