Hey ho, this song is actually a capella, but I like to play it on the guitar... it's simple.
"I'd like to do a song of great social an' political import. Goes like this:"
A D A E
Oh lord, won’t you buy me a mercedes benz ?
A D A E
My friends all drive porsches, I must make amends.
A D A D
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
A D E A
So oh lord, won’t you buy me a mercedes benz ?

| the title is ironic in fact the song drips with sarcasm and ironyy. Janis Joplin is critisizing people who use prayer to ask for personal gain. She came from a repressive religious childhood leaving her with depression probably setting her on the path to rebelion trhough drug misuse and unfortunaely an early death. | |

| I love this song :D It's one of those you just have to like...you know? Janis is one of my biggest heros, very inspiring. And I strongly agree with that CoNjOutsidersLsSm...that she "was the break through for female rockers every where...." Where would be without her? At least i admire her a lot for what she did and her ideas =D | |

| Janis is strongly sarcastic when says in the begining "I want to do a song of great social and political import". This song is about society's superficial values and materialistic people, what were very questioned in sixties. | |

| The part of this song that sticks with me the most is when she shouts "Everybody!" and it just becomes so apparent how lonely she is when there's nobody else there to sing. It's a really poignant twist I think. | |

| For me, this songs not only represents the materialistic ills of her times, but it demonstrates the futility of praying to the "invisible man in the sky." Not only do superstitious people pray to their god in times of need, but also in times of want. A Benz, a color tv, and a night on the town. Classic! | |

| Ah... Janis! What can we say? Hmmm. She loved her Mercedes, she loved to drink a round with her pals and she was a huge fan of the tv game show "Dialing for Dollars." She probably really wanted a color tv! Hee hee! I agree with Comrade Liar, don't read too much into this simple song. I think the things that Janis was praying for were just that... things she really wanted. No hidden meanings. :-) | |

| This one's great for street singing after the bars have closed. On a more serious note, it's easy to draw comparisons with David Bowie's early song, "God Knows I'm Good"; many people rely on religion as a crutch to support their lack of self-reliance, and Janis seemed to have this thread through her work. From a personal viewpoint, I don't like the song much - I prefer her love songs. | |

| The song is symbolic. Joplin is saying how hard she's worked all her life and hasn't had much of a break from all her distractions and just wants some satisfaction... wants to be able to have the pleasures in life and be happy. | |
