i love this song. unfortunately, i'm quite new to deciphering song meanings.. and haven't reached a conclusion of my own that satisfies me. i'm led to believe that this song is written by a heartbroken guy who ended up falling for a good friend. there in lies the dilemma.. they crossed the line from friends into lovers and for some reason or another it's not working out and he's hurting... trying to place blame somewhere.. apologizing for "wasting your time" - and lamenting over the game of love and how the "rules remain a msytery". anyways - what do you all think the blame is all about? i love this song.. it's so sexy.. haunting.. mellow.. and more adjectives that are not presently in my working vocabulary that probably describe how this song makes me feel better than i just did. :)

You guys have it ALL wrong!! It's about two childhood friends. The type of childhood friend that is the opposite sex, but are so close to. But the complications of love and lust have not yet developed. Their friendship is simple. They'd spend the night at eachother's houses and it wasn't a big deal. They grow up and fall in love with eachother over the years. But somewhere, things began to get complicated as they grew up and they lost touch without even realizing it....I'm too hard at work, have you ever heard of anything so absurd? He's saying that it's not an excuse to lose something so precious over something so ridiculous. Now, their friendship is nothing...they let it slip away. It's worth absolutely zero.

i think this song is really sad. isnt it about a guy who led his female friend on, but he doesnt really have the time/heart? he feels bad about it and wants to take the blame but shes so complacent that she doesnt get angry at him.. and in the end it just doesnt work.. probably ends up being really awkward in the end..

means a little to me more now...getting involved with someone, but opportunity knocks and moves one or both of you away from each other, but the opoprtunity is good so you should take it. unfortunately sometimes, people make excuses for why they're dropping you and you end up getting hurt, when the real reason is still out there, ugh

This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. In fact, I prefer not to listen to it because it reminds me of a friend I've had for a couple years. I felt so at ease talking w/ him and felt a deep, irresistible brotherly connection. Unfortunately our discussions turned to a sexual nature & boundaries were crossed despite the fact we lacked sexual chemistry (well, there was some but yet something was missing). I'm not sure why it happened but I deeply regret it. The lines I relate most to are "I'm sorry for wasting your time" as he no longer calls and I often wonder if we'd still be communicating had we not fooled around. "But I don't break that easy. Does it fade away?" gets me every time as I tell myself I'm not heartbroken but in reality it hurts...when will I stop missing him? Like the song implies, we're both to blame yet no one's to blame. So sad & unfortunate our friendship took this path. "The rules remain a mystery" couldn't be more appropriate as he would lead me on & then pull away over & over, sending very incongruent meassages. He's the most abstruse guy I've ever met. Now especially, the "rules are even more mysterious" because I don't feel free to email him & ask how he's doing. What once was a highlight to my week has now become an awkward source of pain. The song implies good friendship is free and priceless but friends w/ benefits is costly...couldn't be more true. Advice to all: keep friendships platonic. For strength I turn to Jason's "You & I Both" which helps me remember the good times & forget about the sadness Absolutely Zero song brings forth.

Beautiful song. It's about the realtionship he was in before becoming a successful recording artist. There are no hard feelings, but he is still sorry that it didn't last. It's his apology to her that his career took importance over her, but that he does love her. I love this song and this whole album.

i think you guys arent quite right....i think its about how he met this great gurl while he was making the album ..."I'm too hard at work" and it was "his fault" cuz he thougth that he could be making an album and be dating this gurl, yet he couldnt and has to go for this album cuz he's been waiting for it for all his life: "Who am I to say this situation isn't great? It's my job to make the most of it Of course I didn't know that it would happen to me." It says it all really....

I'm willing to be this song is about a girl he met while he was making an album and asked her out after they spent the night together at his apartment. He's probably sorry because he has no time for her due to the album and realizes it was his fault, and is sorry for it. I think it's pretty obvious

To me this song is about a guy who is in a relationship but feels attraction to his best friend and is not able to just keep attraction attraction and friendship friendship. It's about the deterioration of something beautiful and something they thought they thought was absolute but ended up being easily broken. It's about realizing that somethings you do just cant be fixed. sometimes a relationship just cant handle too much stress. then again, like most people, whenever I hear a song I try to relate it to myself automatically so i probably stretched the lyrics here and there.

sorry about the messed up post before, i didn't even realize it. i love this song so much, and even though it seems like its about a friendship turned relationship, i still have my own meaning. for some reason, when i broke up with my boyfriend and he said he was too busy with college and schoolwork and stuff, this song just seemed to fit in. he said we had both changed and that he just had to concentrate on other things. i know i might be compeltely off, that's just what it reminds me of

it's the classic story of getting drunk and having sex with your female friend and not wanting to commit later so he pulls out lame excuses like "I have to work and travel and stuff". that's how I see it. either that or just breaking up and getting blamed for all the relationship problems abd then you're like "why is none of this your fault, you dirty slut!!?!??" I sense a lot of anger in this song ironicly depicted through a mellow melody.
