To me, locomotive breath is fairly obviously about a man who, after suffering many problems in his life, comes to blame god for all the fuckups and things that happen to him. "Old Charlie stole stole the handle" Appears in the first three stanza, wheras; "He picks up Gideon's Bible - open at page one - God, He stole the handle" in the last seems to suggest that this man has decided to use God as a skapegoat for his problems. This is only the first thing that came to my mind when i read the lyrics however. --- 15 here, I happly inherited my musical taste from my pearants, which solidly included Jethro Tull. I've pursuaded my band to play Seal Driver (Broadsword and the Beast - lyrics unfortunately not here yet) which is my all time favourate by Tull.

The Biblical reference to "Page 1" infers the beginning of the end. Thus, by Christ (Charlie) appearing to fulfill the prophecies, he brought about the possibilities of Armaggedon as set out in Revelation. The result, then, is to immanentise the eschaton: "stealing the handle", putting history on a linear path to the end of time: "The train it wont stop going, no way to slow down."
