Home J Jewel Foolish Games Guitar Tab

Verse 1:
[Em]You took your [C]coat off and stood in the [G]rain,
You were always [D]crazy like that
[Em]I watched from my [C]window,
always felt I was [G]outside looking i[D]n on you
You were a[Em]lways the mysterious one
with [C]dark eyes and careless hair,
You were f[G]ashionably sensitive, but too [D]cool to care
Then you [Em]stood in my [C]doorway, with nothing to [G]say
besides some [D]comment on the weather
BRIDGE:
Well in c[Am]ase you failed to notice,
In c[C]ase you failed to see,
[G]This is my heart bleeding before you,
[D]This is me down on my knees
CHORUS:
[C]These foolish g[D]ames are [G]tear[D]ing me [C]apart
[C]You're thoughtless [D]words are [G]breaki[D]ng my h[C]eart
You're breaking [Em]my heart
Verse 2:
You were always [Em]brilliant in the [C]morning
Smoking your [G]cigarettes, [D]talking over coffee
You philos[Em]ophies on art, Baroque mo[C]ved you,
You loved Mozart and you'd s[G]peak of your loved ones
As I c[D]lumsily strummed my guitar
[Em]You'd teach me of honest things
[C]Things that were daring, things that were clean
[G]Things that knew what an honest do[D]llar did mean
So I h[Em]id my soiled hands behind my [C]back
[G]Somewhere along the line I must've go[D]ne off track with you
BRIDGE:
[Am]Excuse me, think I've mistaken you for [C]somebody else
[G]Somebody who gave a damn,
[D]Somebody more like myself
REPEAT CHORUS.
[E]You took your [C]coat off and stood in the [G]rain,
you were always crazy like t[D]hat

I love the piano, I wish that I could play it but it sounds like it would be really hard to play.

This is deff. my favorite Jewel song .. it's brillant. It has so much depth and meaning that it's almost unbelieveable. It's about one of the reletionships that you love .. but also at times love to hate. Jewel would deff. have to be one of my idols now that i'm learning the guitar

I agree with everyone above.. This is an enchantingly meloncholy song... I think one of the reason's it's so great though.. is because I believe what she's singing. She paints such a great character sketch of this guy... and I sympathize for her, b/c he's playing "foolish games" on her.

Actually Skycat, its not all that hard of a song to play, its just very flowing but the way it flows isnt all that terriably hard to play :D. I think most of us can related to this song, It reminds me of my ex that I am kinda back with but god only knows why, especially the "Well Excuse me, guess i mistaked you for someone else somebody who gave a damn" sounds so much like how i felt, and still feel somtimes. 1 2 3 Next

fashionably sensitive - aware of the clothing trends, or sensitive new age guy? there's a double meaning here that i just noticed - cool! this song reminds me of a teacher that once tried to convince me to "try" and to "push myself" (you know, the whole inspirational speech thingy) and write poetry - cos this song (it was on at the time - yes, we listened to the radio in english class) was poetry itself. but then the teacher turned out like the guy in the song - too cool to care (not that i had an affair or anything - not that my heart was broken, but i WAS slightly disillusioned) :)

I suppose I'm the only one who happens to think that this song is referring to a father-figure. It sounds like she admires him, but he doesn't really show appreciation for her. And because she talks about how brilliant he is and him teaching her about his philosophies of life and views on art, it also makes me think it's someone much older. Um...the part where she's like, "you teach me of honest things...things that were daring things, that were clean...things I knew what an honest dollar did mean. I hid my soiled hands behind my back..." I'm thinking that he's a pure person who is teaching her to be the same, and she's sinned and she's trying to hide those sins (soiled hands) from him.

Jewel is an amazing singer. she really is beautiful too. The way she expresses her feelings is amazing and very true. She sings about things that don't only(orcould) happen to her but also to her fans. I think she is just soo amazing and so real. This song really makes her shine brighter. No other artist can compare to her.. Foolish games .. to me means that U might be in love ( or (think) ur in love with a person that is totally not ur type and doesn't understand you at all. It's like the guy doesn't know love or how to love.. maybe.

when this song first came out when i was a lot younger... the song never really had an affect on me. now as i'm older i can totally relate with the lyrics... my best friend that i've had a crush on the last couple years... totally is like the person jewel is describing. someone that only cares for himself but when he needs something or someone will turn to that person to get what he wants. my friend does this to me and all though he is sometimes a good guy... his 'foolish games' are tearing me apart. anyways... this is how the song relates to me and i hope this makes sense!

"fashionably sensitive but too cool to care" i like that line. I think it means he is sensitive to a point where he looks good, but when it really comes down to her needing him, hes not there. good song

Usually, Jewel has very deep lyrics to her awesome songs. This song, on the other hand, does not. In a way that disappoints me. . . but I still love it 'cause it's so straight forward. How she describes the man in this song is just like my ex; so, of course, this song brings back memories, but I can't resist listening to it over and over!

I was listening to the radio last night and this song came on. I remembered when it first came out I had to have been like 13 or 14 maybe, I never really got it them but now that I am older it just clicked. This song is about loving someone who thinks they are above you. The way this person loves her one minute and hates her the next is jading her when he yells at her at breakfast "Well Excuse me, guess i've mistaken you for someone else/somebody who gave a damn/someone more like myself," it breaks my heart because she is supposed to love everything he is about, but when does he ever listen to her play and take time out to ask her how she feels? This guy is elitist and selfish, she knows that but the times that he takes his coat off and stands in the rain are the times she loves him. When he come crawling back to her she remembers why she loves and the process starts all over again. The 'I am leaving you because you are selfish but I am going to take you back,' the 'I love but now I hate you' and the 'I love you out of pity because I am better than you' are the foolish games that are steadily breaking her.

this song is truly beautiful. her voice... the lyrics... the music... it's really heart-breaking. I LOVE this song, because it's one of those songs that express exactly how I feel. it's like she's in love with him, but for him it's all casual and just a game and their just playing games with each other's hearts (or maybe just that he's playing games with her heart) but she loves him and that's tearing up her heart that he's so insensitive of her feelings, that he doesn't feel the same.

I agree with you. This song is lovely. It really takes you back to the time when you had that crush on that too-cool-to-be-true guy but well...he didn't even know you're alive. Jewel really has a way with words. I think the lyrics are gorgeous.
