Caveat emptor - since this is from memory.
I don't guarantee that these are the exact same chords that
Hendrix played, but it should give the basic structure.
I'm using mxrn here which, on including the plain text file,
has mangled the relationship of the words to the chords (so
much for the benefits of proportional fonts!). I'll leave the entry as it is,
though, on the basis that it can still be accessed as plain text.
IMHO its a beautiful song. Have fun with it...........

Playing Guide:
--------------
The Db-Eb-E-F chords in the Db-Bb-Eb-E-F sequence can be a bit tricky
if you finger the 2nd, 3rd, 4th strings with separate fingers. One
trick is to play this shape using just the 1st and 3rd fingers of
the left hand. This way you can get the chord onto the fingerboard
a lot quicker, although you tend to lose the notes on the top two
strings because you can't usually bend the 3rd finger back far enough.

Angel came down from heaven yesterday
Stayed with me just long enough
to rescue me
And she told me a story yesterday
About the sweet love between the moon
and the deep blue sea
Then she spread her wings high over me
She said, I'll come back to see you tomorrow
And I said...
Fly on my sweet Angel
Fly on though the sky
Fly on my sweet Angel
Tomorrow I'm gonna be
by your side.
Sure enough this woman came
home to me
Silver wings silhouetted against
a child's sunrise
And my Angel she said unto me
Today is the day for you to rise.
Take my hand
You're gonna be my man
You're gonna rise
Then she took me high over yonder
And I said..
Fly on my sweet Angel
Fly on through the sky
Fly on my sweet Angel
Forever I'm gonna be by your side.
( I was a bit frustrated to find only the first verse submitted, so
please accept the entire text, complete with the intended salvation.)

| This song is about his mother, who (in the words of a thousand blues songs) used to 'run around town'. She was a tart with a drink problem, unfortunately, and so was never the real mum Jimi wanted her to be, but he still loved her dearly. She died while Jimi was still young, so he held an image of her in his mind - that of a protecting angel, as all mothers protect their children. Perhaps there is a bit of 'life and death' in there too, because I don't think Jimi ever expected to live into ripe old age. One of the greatest ever tragic rock'n'roll deaths when Jimi was taken from this earth.... | |

| ok, do u think jimi was possibly thinking about his death? i think he was really contemplating the afterlife, death, and life when he wrote this. first the angel comes along to prove to him that there is something out there. the angel says shes gonna come back tomorrow - meaning that jimi knew he was going to die the next day. this is in the song, not in real life. so he doesnt do anything, i think i would try and live as much as i can if i knew id die the next day. anyway, in the last part "forever i will be by your side" it means he just wants to observe life now instead of watch him live it. it seems he is serious about the meaning of all this death and stuff. ok that was my unitelligable jibber jabber... | |

| The song is about a dream Jimi had. The angel is his mother and she is always there for him. In reality, his mother died when he was 15 and was never around when she was alive. He was mostly raised by his father. | |

| One thing I've noticed with everybody's comments is that they're saying THIS IS WHAT IT IS. We don't know what it is, and if you've ever written a poem you know that it can even be interpreted in ways you didn't even think about. I believe that this song is about his mother. Probably written the day after (or maybe not) he had a dream about his mother, who was going to be his guardian angel. This goes along with "Little Wing," too, and could possibly be singing about the same occurance, his mother, or could be singing about something completely different. However, this could be related to death because (obviously) angels are no longer on the earth anymore. If he's going to be "by [the angel's] side," then perhaps he knew that he was going to die. It is possible, however, that he's talking about how short life is, and that maybe he doesn't *need* an angel, because he is telling the angel to "fly on / fly on through the sky," maybe telling the angel off. Of course, that's just my opinion, I don't think there is a real solid definition to this. | |
