	Ahh, although you all think you know so much about this song, you do not. I see one person here who knows what jimmy was writing about and you all ridiculed this person. COCAINE is what its about. Jimmy and the band used to drink margaritas on stage and when pretending to put salt on their fingers to lick with the drink they were actually shaking a line of coke out of a salt shaker. One night they left the shaker out and a waitress took it and put it on one of the tables in the club. So they had to search for the lost shaker of salt and the waitress, a woman was to blame, but in reality it was the bands fault for leaving the shaker out. So, now you know what the songs about. Too bad for all you beach loving hippes that were so insulted when someone tried to tell you what the song was about.

	My best friends' dad was trying to tell me and her that this song was about cocaine, and he was trying to explain it to us, but I just don't see it. Does anyone know anything about that??

	Hobson27, I don't care if that was the inspiration for the song - some weird inside joke regarding cocaine - I would NEVER want to imagine that cocaine was the inspiration behind this song. Uggh... No, it's about a vacation. In your mind, or in a warm climate as suggested by things in this song, like flip-flops. What do flip-flops have to do with losing a salt shaker filled with cocaine? Coke is a shitty thing to write a song about anyways. Maybe he wrote this song with an INTENDED DOUBLE MEANING, but to be honest, I wish I never heard the cocaine story. That will ruin the song next time I hear it if I think about it.

	I love this song, such a summer, relaxing, happy tune to it. Everytime i hear it, it brings me back to playing football on the beach at my uncles house in Cape May, Nj.

	Man I am not sure how a lot of you get such complex meanings for this song lol. It is a very very simple song. If you are a Floridian you should get this song quite easily because most of us live it everyday. It is about a dude who goes down to Florida(probably the keys) enjoys himself so much he doesn't want to leave, so he doesn't. Everyone back home thinks its because of a woman but it isn't. It is because he just fell in love with the lifestyle. it isnt about a place in your mind. His place is the Keys, many others could have other places they love and enjoy as much.

	Margaritaville is about a guy whose life is withering away from alcohol and is too stupid to realize it. It has been embraced by people whose lives are withering away from alcohol and are too stupid to realize it. Margaritaville is a song so mellow it may as well not exist, about a guy so mellow he may as well be dead. It's an addiction song, pure and simple, but one without any balls. It wants to be a song of celebration, but it isn't; it's about that time long after the party is over and you just feel dead.

	No no no no NO. Cocaine? Do not desecrate a beautiful mind-vacation like Margaritaville by associating it with ANYTHING as trivial and life-wasting as cocaine. Margaritaville is about celebration. "Hey, someone wrecked your car!" Appropriate answer? "So? I'll get another. And while I am at it, I'll have another frozen sumthinorother". "Hey, your Ma/wife/boss/girlfriend/parish priest/vetrinarian called, and they are PISSED-OFF at YOU!". Correct answer? "That's nice. They'll get over it. Hey, are we out of salt for the margarita glasses?". Cocaine? Please. It's about taking yourself 'off the hook', so to speak. It's about..... hanging out, and watching all the bullshit life has to throw kind of go over your head for a bit. You be immersed in it later, just...... not right now. And this is said with the grin that only being pleasantly smashed can provide. I realize that I have gone on too long, and I would stop, but.... I don''t care. In January of 2002 I took my family (Wife, 9 year old son, and myself) to Aruba. The night we left, on the way home from work, I stopped and bought myself a package of twinkies. Golden.... Spongecake! The second day we were there, I pulled up one of those loungers, and slowly ate the twinkies. Essentially, "nibblin' on spongecake". While I was doing this, I honest-to-god watched fellow tourists pouring on the oil. Some, nicer than others. And while this was happening, I had "Margaritaville" on in the cd headphones. If I live to 100, I'll never forget it. Watching my wife laugh, roll her eyes, knowing damn well what I was doing. Do it once, folks. You'll wanna do it again. Thanks for a good song, and better memory, Jimmy.

	This kinda symbolizes the bech-bum lifestyles you'd find in Florida and the Caribbean, like the "tourists covered in oil" and such. It's a laid-back song about having a good time in the sun, with a frozen margarita to wash away your troubles. ^_^

	I agree that this, in essence, is a sad song. This song is about some dude who ran away from whatever problems he had. He's "wasting away" drinking himself into a stupor and doesn't even remember anything. How can everyone say it's happy just because the way it sounds may invoke happiness to you? Give me a break. "That frozen concoction that helps me hang on." He doesn't know how to get by without being drunk anymore to try to run away from whatever's troubling him. And though he says there's no woman to blame for his current state, there obviously is, since he's saying it's his own fault that whatever it was didn't work out. Is he blaming himself? Who knows? You people need to get over the hippy mentality that this song is about a vacation. A permanent one, maybe, where your entire life turns to crap.

	If you really think about it, this is a very sad song. I mean, the poor guy is obviously getting over some girl, and margaritas are his only escape. He's trying to escape reality by getting drunk. This song serves well as an expression of pain. It is a very good song. I'm not a huge Buffett fan, but this one is beautiful in its emotion.

	kkhx3 great story. read his book Margaritaville, i'm reading it right now in school and it is the best book i ever read, if u read the introduction to the song it explains what Margarittivle is. I'd tell you but i think you'd enjoy it more if you read the book.

	There is no sadness to this song. It is about being in a place in your mind. Where nothing is THAT serious, so long as you have booze in the blender. At the end of the song, it is by self admission that it really IS, "His own damn fault". But he certainly doesn't sound too bent out of shape about it. I take it that, while things in the world may be wrong, and life can be littered with strife, right NOW everything is jes' fine.....
