Structure and lyrics:

Intro

Verse 1
take advantage of these times, you said
you let me down
it hasn't been the first time
as i'm falling in the pit of fire my mind's made up
i'm never coming back here

Chorus
how long would it take me to walk across the united states all alone?
the west coast has been traumatized
and i think i'm the only one still alive

Verse 2
is it just a coincidence to see you by yourself with no direction?
now its time to move on and
don't you know that things aren't getting better

Chorus
how long would it take me to walk across the united states all alone?
the west coast has been traumatized
and i think i'm the only one still alive

Bridge
when the world caves in what are you going to do
when the world caves in what are you going to do for me?
when the world caves in what are you going to do
when the world caves in what are you going to do for me?

(don't try and stop me
because i'm falling fast into this pit of fire which surrounds us all
in a blanket of fear that i've been wrapped in for years
you can't stop me)

Chorus (soft)
how long would it take me to walk across the united states all alone?
the west coast has been traumatized
and i think i'm the only one still alive

Chorus (hard)
how long would it take me to walk across the united states all alone?
the west coast has been traumatized
and i think i'm the only one still alive

This song as a special meaning for me especially as we speak. Especially the line "How long will it take me to walk across the United States?" Because..I am getting ready to walk across the united states (well, from NC to north of Washington, DC). The only thing I can relate too in this song is the line about the West Coast, because unlike Jimmy, I'm not on the West Coast. Starting with the 1st four lines, I have been let down my whole life and there is nothing for me here. I've been sheltered and never been allowed to live. I do feel like I'm falling in a pit of fire, so I have to get out. Whether I come back I don't know. Moving on, I don't see any direction in my life where I'm going, I don't know what to do or what's going to happen. Things arn't getting better, I have to get out now and no one try to stop me. I have been wrapped in a blanket of fear for years.

I agree with EmoPunkPiper that the song is amazing live. I saw them at the River Rave and at that time I only had their 'Bleed American' Cd. After the concert I bought 'Clarity' and 'Static Prevails'.

well, this is definetly about relationships... at the start i think hes saying how this isnt a good time for him..."pit of fire"...he explains why he feels this way. he also says "im never coming back here again", this is showing that he doesnt want this feeling again. i.e. things are getting better from now on. i do love the united states line, i see this as metaphorical... -the 'west side' is where he is now, and this has been 'traumatised' it is in a bad situation, like he is -walking acroos the united states is like getting to a better place, getting away from this bad situation that he is in now. this is a good metaphor as walking across the united states seems like a massive task, therefore, improving his situation isnt going to be easy - he asks about doing it alone...he is suggesting perhaps breaking up and moving on by himself, this is shown with "dont you try and stop me" he also comments on this 'coincidence', showing that she is in the same position as he is. this song really is about moving on, the first thing that comes into my head when i hear it is the idea of moving away from a bad situation to a good one, and having the strength to do it, this is also not ONLY for relationships thats what this song means to me, and i love it p.s. the music is amazing, as many have sed the bridge rules, and when they played it live it was brilliant as i wanted to hear it the most out of all the songs and i had to wait for ages cos they played it towards the end

I hear that.... "How long would it take me to walk across the U.S. all alone" is one of the best lyrics
