| this song is amazing, i heard about it over a year ago when a girl name CLAIRE totally broke my heart. Ever since then Jimmy Eat World has been one of my favorite bands. I can relate to this song so much. In response to SQWIZZER's comment....... I think that "paint a cross on your left hand" has something to do with how "straght-edge" people but those big black X's(some people call them crosses others "X's") on their hands to show there beliefs. thats just my guess though | |

| i downloaded an acoustic version of this. it's not the best quality but he definately says "not since you were mine". i don't know if this is the proper lyric or just him changing it this one time, but it makes the whole song seem different. it makes it seem more bitter. anyways, that's what i think... | |

| i think the cross thing is much simpler than that...the song is about drinking your way into oblivion and out of something good...if you go to a show or a club or something, and there is beer served, they're gonna "paint a cross on your left hand" or, actually, they'll marker a cross on oth your hands, so you can't even attempt to drink just a sip of alcohol. The speaker in this song is pleading with someone who's ruining their life with alcohol to stop....on a personal note, my name is claire, and this song introduced me, a few years ago, to the wonderfulness that is j.e.w....i'm also an alcoholic who managed to drink herself out of a theatre scholarchip at a very good school....it's like it was written just for me...but it wasn't... | |

| My fave song of Static Prevails. It really hits you when Jim sings the line "One last goodbye maybe the rest of your life". Just kills me this song! Kills me! | |

| Sometimes that last goodbye sticks with you the rest of your life. You can never forget the person who walks out of your life or the thoughts of what you did wrong. | |

| I can relate to this song completely. To me, this song is about a serious infatuation with someone. Knowing this is going to be the last time you'll ever see them, and your last chance to let them know how you feel. This has happened to me before, and many other people, and that is what the song means to me. | |

| to me, the end of the relationship j.e.w. sings about is nearly inevitable. however, he still wants the relationship to continue (i can still see you around). i think the song is about the hard choices we have to make in our life & the refusal to see obvious changes occuring (attention focused on today) i covered this song with my friend josh at an open mic i hosted. we each played an acoustic guitar, him on lead. i sang the lyrics & he did the back-up & harmony vocals. this is the song that first got me interested in jimmy eat world. | |

| this is the first song that got me fully into jew. probably because my name is claire. jimmy eat world are my far my fav ever. im not sure what it is about them, sometime its not even their music, just when i listen to them, they can totally influence my mood. they can change the way i think about something, and make me feel so much better. sometimes it feels they're just writing the music to my life story....but im just crazy | |

| I love a girl named Claire. Too bad she doesn't and will never have mutual feelings. Well, life's a kick in the teeth isn't it? This song arguably has more meaning to me than it does to anyone else in the world. I love this song and Jimmy Eat World. | |

| i think the cross means were you cut your palm and someone elses, hold hands and you share the blood. it shows a bond. and where you hold hands it forms a cross almost. i think it showing they won't ever be apart....mayve | |

| Oh I always thought this song was about childhood sweetheart (because I'd always thought it was 'not since you were 9') and she leaving the small town because she knew she could make it out somewhere bigger (one chance to show them, one shot's all you get) Oh well, that was my opinion. It' still a beautiful song! | |
