you could play these notes individually, strum that also
but I think it's better that you should
strum it slowly with your thumb.

This song is possibly the high point of anything Jimmy Eat World has down muscially speaking, the opening for some reason reminds me of a subway station at night with the heavy bass and just the vibe it gives off, its then followed by a lighter guitar piece that erupts into Jim screaming " Pay Attention!!!!, stop paying for your regret!" the songs is almost like coming out of the darkness for me. It starts in the dark, subways station and seems like Jim reaches an epifany as he sings, from this we end up in a comfortable place with crickets chirping all around you. Its and extremely engulfing song with pure emotion running through every note and too me its all about learning not to dwell in the past and learning just to be happy.

This song will pick you up and take you somewhere. It is the most awesome song on Static Prevails. The best part of the song is when he says "nothing lost but still nothing gained." I also really like the 2:26 intro part. Yeah, it is kind of long, but it really helps define the song. When the singing starts with "pay attention" being sung forcefully and emotionally, it was after two and a half minutes of subtle and sort of bizarre guitar and bass rifts. It's like being awakened from a strange dream, not a nightmare, but a lonely and mysterious dream. I'm weird, I dream along with JEW's music. Jimmy Eat World is awesome...

i love this song! Definately one of their best. It's just a really beautiful song. There's nothing I could say about it to really do it justice. If anyone hasn't heard it yet, they really should. Isn't there another part at the end of the song like "under cushions hide the change"?

I find it amusing (in a good way) that every JEW song, from the Static Prevails album has total good reviews; and each person saying "Yep, this is the most perfect song on Static Prevails"...they can't compete with each other. They are all awesome, including Digits. 1

one of the first JEW songs i ever heard but i love it so much more that i have an idea about what it is about. i think it is about growing old and not being able to do the things that you were once able to do ("fossil resources all used up," "there's only my weight left"). "Euthanasia could be the greatest gift" - wow, i had never know before about a minute ago but euthanasia is like what dr. kevorkian did when he killed all the sick people who want to die. therefore, because you are old and cant do anything it might be better to die than to just sit there on your porch all day ("dont leave the house today"). "life means i hear my ears ring one more day" - one of my fav JEW quotes. what an amazing song.

yes, yes, i entirely agree with corduroyrock. though i am far too inferior to even attempt to guess at the full meaning of j.e.w. songs, i do love this song. Mostly, yes, for the insanely good and inventice guitar/sound to it. It's beautiful. One of their best off of static prevails.

this is one of the most truly amazing songs in the world. the orchestration is beyond brilliant. if for only the reason of its 150 second instrumental intro--pause--PAY ATTENTION in the most ragged, visceral plea. then, blah, blah, brilliant, brilliant. then, as it crescendos [for the second time, i suppose) we hear the beautiful, whimsically idyllyically adolescent ode to all that can be. then the line "life means hearing my ears ring one more day" which is brilliant beyond brilliant. then i think about how amazing every aspect of this song is.. and go, aw, gee that sure was real good. then: boom. whoa! theres this sketch tack-on that makes everything make sense and cleanses the world off all that is evil and bad in the world. its about the human condition.

jimmy eat world saved my life. they are incredible, as is this song. its is my favorite... no one can really understand what jew means in any of their songs.. we are all far too inferior. but i think it has something to do with accomplishing what needs to be done, and not makign excuses for failure. and some sort of failed relationship.. i think the girl was what he used to distract himself from the world and all of the things he needed to accomplish.

''I just don't feel a thing, when you say, we'll get there someday'' Those lines just scream out beauty to me but this song is excellent from start to finish i love how Jimmy Eat World can be so mellow then hard hitting then back to mellow again. I think this song is about disillusionment and frustration. It tries to make people prick their ears up and PAY ATTENTION to whats important-''Pay attention stop paying for regret, fossil resources all used up''. Jimmy Eat World are masters when it comes to making people listen to them.
