Ten by Jimmy Eat World

Tabbed (Chorded? is that a word?) by Jeffrey Chupp - 4:13 PM 12/4/2001
djchupp@samford.edu

I think this is the first attempt to show how to play ten...
________________________________
Standard Tuning

for the intro, play something like this

e-----------------|
B-----------------|
G----2------------|
D----2------------| over and over
A-----------------|
E-----------------|

when the words come in we start playing these three chords for the verse

A E/G# D/F#
e--0---0----2-------|
B--2---0----3-------|
G--2---1----2-------|
D--2---2----0-------| these chords are picked, not strummed.
A--0---2------------| always hit the bass note first
E------4----2-------|

Verse One:
A E/G# D/F#
We left behind the busy crowd.
A E/G# D/F#
So it seems we slow down.
A E/G# D/F#
Meet me with a way out through the lies.
A E/G# D/F#
Nowhere, going nowhere in the fake yellow light.

Chorus:
F#m E A
Blame no one. X2

Verse Two:

A E/G# D/F#
The feelings change so fast.
A E/G# D/F#
Safety scares them away.
A E/G# D/F#
I can't bring myself to say it's my own advice I need.
A E/G# D/F#
Nowhere and then nowhere. Living trapped inside the chase.

Chorus Two:
F#m E A
Blame no one. X4

Bridge:
D, E, F#m

D E F#m
Our weakness is the same. We need poison sometimes. X2
D E A
So take another drink with me.

Chorus Three:
F#m E A
Blame no one. X4

Outro:
F#m, E, A played very high on the piano...

the way i saw it was that he was talking to someone else who ALSO had a substance abuse problem. but hey, that's just the way i see it. one of the things that makes Clarity the best album I own is that you can take all of the songs almost any way you want. The lyrics are open-ended like that. But why don't you tell me THIS TwoScoops: how do you see "We need Poison sometimes, so take another drink with me" or "I can't bring myself to say it's my own advice I need. Nowhere and then nowhere. Living trapped inside the chase" as parts of a song about relationships? I guess i can see the whole relationship thing. But can't you just open up your mind for a second and realize that this song COULD be about addiction as well? Maybe it's about both... I mean, isn't it possible to be addicted to people as well? But anyways, that was part of my point... that Jimmy Eat World doesn't just write songs about relationships. I mean... they're not Dashboard Confessional.

In my opinion he is in a relationship, yet his partner just lies about things to get away with her thoughts and actions. "Meet me with a way out through the lies." He is saying to just tell her the truth with no lies, which the truth im guessing is she wants to end the relationship. Since the feelings change so fast, she is afraid to tell him the truth, because she does not want things to change, she is feeling safe with what she has, even though she does not want that.So he says "Look in my eyes and blame no one." as in, do not tell white lies and blames to tell me what you want to say. Just tell me truthfully and straightforwardly.

i think this song is talking about old friends that have drifted and they meet again looking to hold onto to something that just isn't there anymore.

In my opinion this song is both about an addiction and a relationship. The relationship between the two people is what has them addicted and is the poison Jim's sings about. Both of them are trying to be strong for the toher one and deep down they both know it isn't working but can't find a way to break the cycle. Thier need for eachother is thier weakness but as he says they keep coming back for another drink. I could be wrong but I just get that feeling. Especially when Jim says its his own advice he needs. He knows what the right thing is too do but just can't make it happen. Brilliant song either way. 1 2 Next

I think this song is about a guy who doesn't know where to take his relationship. It seems that he and his girlfriend are now at the point where they are beginning to settle down, and they have lost the fire with which they began their relationship. They are probably kidding themselves that they still love each other as deeply as they once did, "MEET ME WITH A WAY THROUGH OUT THE LIES; NOWHERE GOING NOWHERE IN THE FAKE YELLOW LIGHT." It also sounds like the guy knows what he has to do, but he is so caught up in the comfort of just having a relationship that he doesn't want to break it all off. And at the end of the song, he is just being blunt and asking his partner to join him in bitting the bullet and calling the whole thing off.

If this is Tom's favorite song, then they should be friggin playing it live all the time. I've just always listened to this song and envisioned two people in a bar, with one explaining the woes of relationships. Not long relationships.. moreso a guy walking up to a girl and them not hitting it off, then coming back to his friend and his friend explains to him that it's no one's fault. The guy who got shot down will blame himself, and that's not right. The first verse is the guy talking to the chick "leaving behind the busy crowd" and "slowing it down" and asking her to "meet him with a way out through the lies" as if to say "you have to have more to offer me than everyone else" but it isn't that way, and the conversation is "nowhere, going nowhere." The second verse is the thinking afterwards, how, in an instant, your feelings of hope get shot down "the feelings change so fast" and he's still going nowhere. So blame no one. It's not your fault. It's no one's fault. We all go through this, sometimes we need poison, so here's to life.

not knocking Dashboard... but it's true, they only write about relationships. Jimmy Eat World doesn't.

xpankfrisst... I totally agree with you. I was thinking that it was something along the lines of a drug or alcohol addiction ("we need poison sometimes, so take another drink with me") But I think that you are totally right on with the only him being able to help himself out. as for your comment before about it being tom's favorite song: yea, i agree with you, this song isn't the best on the album in MY opinion ("just watch the fireworks", but "table for glasses" comes pretty close). but, as always, you do have to consider the fact that songs are always more personal to the writer. maybe it's just a song that hits home for him, you know? whether it be a personal problem or a problem that a friend may have... that's prolly why it's his favorite song on the album. oh... and also.... if you haven't noticed the harmony in that song... it's absolutely beautiful.

ummm... i'm not exactly sure what this song is about... but for some reason. i just have a feeling it's not about a relationship. jimmy eat world isn't one of those bands that only talks about romantic relationships. thats the way i take it anyways. clarity is wonderful album becuase it is so open to interpretation. it's easily the best album i own

Hehe, dont knock DC though. People like him/them/it and I have respect for him/it/them. This song is classic. I dont know what it means yet cos i've only just got Clarity and this song. But the relationship one sounds more plausable.

I can't see how emoPUNK and xpank can disregard 85% of a song and come up with a substance abuse meaning to the song. Okay wiseguys, what's the rest of the song mean? Who's he talking to? his drink? did his drink's feelings change for him?

the dudes sing the songs they write. so i'm pretty 90% sure this is a jim song. jim has said on repeated occasions that the songs mean whatever you want them to mean. personally, i think it's an addiction song. you can be addicted to a person or a feeling, after all.

this song is about escapism through alcohol. it seems to think that drink kills all the shit the day has produced. i think he suspects he shouldn't be drinking, but he does anyway because it makes him feel better. but i think all the drinking does is make him realise that he is the one at fault for all the things that trouble him. he must "blame no one" as he realises that only he can help himself out. anyways, that's what i think...
