This song is just awesome, I agree a lot with what's been said already. The one thing I thought maybe I could add was that, although I agree with the relationship part, but I think it's also about growing up in general and learning from mistakes Amazing still it seems Ill be 23 I wont always love what Ill never have I wont always live in my regrets That's the biggest evidence of the growing up, how old you are really doesn't have that much to do with a relationship, as much as it does, getting older and and growing up. One of the things he regrets is not taking a chance with the girl, when he knew it was the right time. So I think it focuses on life as well as the relationship thing, but that's just my opinion. Regardless, it's a sweet song, 'Futures' overall, is better than I expected because I knew there sound was going to be different, and I saw the track listing and I didn't like the titles really 'Pain' 'Kill' 'Work' 'Drugs or Me' etc... but the album is actually really good, and despite havign to wait forever for it, I think it could rival Bleed American, but we'll see as time goes on, the first one is a classic

I interpret it as he's done with this old relationship that went on for a long time, hence the talk about how he'll be 23. She took up so much of his life up that he's reflecting on it. "You'll sit alone forever" meaning that you're going to wait for her to come back but shes not coming. "What are you hoping for" meaning he doesn't really know if he does want her back. I know this is a sad "break up" style song and usually these types of songs are about someone breaking up with the writer, but i think he was the one who did it instead.

Jim was around 23 when the work for their album clarity was released/made. It makes me wonder if this song is based on that point in his life... Regardless, its one of the most amazing pieces of work adkins has ever released. Its very honest seems to give an insight look at the struggles and complications of being young and making life-changing descisions (not matter what they may be). Its been said before, but ill say it again - Jimmy eat world is one of the best at what they do.

Like Stuart sayd... this song could mean anything. In My Oppinion, I think this song is about a guy talking to himself about how the girl he loves, loves someone else... "No one else will have me like you do No one else will have me, only you" But then later in the song, "Youll sit alone forever If you wait for the right time What are you hoping for?" He is telling himself to move on, the girl he "loves", loves someone else and he was wasting time waiting her to love him back, but it will never happen. thats just my oppinion... anything can be right with a song like this.

has anyone read the CD booklet for the deluxe edition? jim says "it is ok to have the vocal entrance a few minutes into the song if you still get the feeling you are being led somewhere interesting." i thought that's really interesting in how the melodic structure juxtaposes the lyrical content or my interpretation of it. this is by far my fav. song on Futures. i know i put alot of my own experience into the interpretation but thas the beauty of ambiguous lines and JEW letting us interpret how we wish to. anyways i see the song as one speaker always talking to one person. it's like a guy trying to say goodbye to somone who has rejected him because she's waiting for the perfect guy or "the right time." this is someone he loves as "no one else will know" his lonely dreams or that part of him but her. he senses rejection and so he's "still driving away," and he's sorry for doing something she didnt want. "i wont always love these selfish things" is like his own desires, ie beiing with her. "i wont always live, not stopping" is the whole idea of living in the present, which seems to be a common JEW theme (if not now then when). "it was my turn to decide, i knew this was our time no one else will have me, like you do no one else will have me, only you" he made a decision, i think, to ask her out, and he thought it was the right time for them to be together b/c there's no one else like her for him. "you'll sit alone forever if you wait for the right time what are you hoping for im here im now im ready, holding on tite dont give away the end, the one thing that stays mine" i interpret it as she feels its not the right time/person for her, so they're not together, so he responds with a kind of "what are you waiting for? you're stuck in these fairytale dreams. im rite here for you" kinda response "dont give away th end" to me is like dont try to figure out how the end will be, i know how it will be as far as i'm concerned, but dont assume how it will be for US. he wants some ownership or say in how it will be for them (thas why he says "the one thing that stays mine") "amazing still it seems, i'll be 23 i wont always love what ill never have i wont alway live in my regrets" here's where it gets ironic for me. i interpret it as he is not 23, but actually a few yrs ahead as he speaks. wut may have hppnd btwn him and her may have been when he's 23. hence "Amazing" and "still it seems" so obviously he's dwelled on this part of his life concerning this person, but he warns that he wont always hold onto it as he is/has done (im her im now, im ready, holding on tite"). and unlike her, he wont live with regrets (b/c she never gave him a chance) it's like the whole song is about taking a chance on him now, but she wont, she will keep waiting for an ideal that may not exist. ironically, the structure of the song is one where the listener must wait for the words, but it's well worth the wait. i tihnk those two ideas of waiting for something of worth and living in the moment, taking a chance now are at conflict with each other in this whole song. sorry for the long comment. any thots?

as me, being someone on the verge of 23 in a few months, it really does describe all those feelings you get when you're letting the one you should be with go, but you're so involved with getting your own shit together that you don't have the time/patience/maturity to give yourself completely to the other person without situating your own situation first. "Don't give away the end, the one thing that stays mine"---mind blowing lyric, especially if you're ending things, but knowing deep in your heart of hearts that you still have hope that something could still be there for that other person later on...dammit, i LOVE jimmy eat world!

i think this is by far the best song on 'futures'. its so full of emotion and personally, i get lost in the music and beautiful lyrics everytime i listen to it. i sort of agree with the comments made by rbf737, but i also have my own opinion on this song. i feel that its about wanting someone so badly but not being able to tell them because they dont have the courage and they arent sure how the other person feels. for example... "I felt for sure last night At once we said goodbye No one else will know these lonely dreams No one else will know that part of me... " the way i interpret this is that the person has truly realised their feelings for the other person one night, but in fear, has left in a hurry, not knowing what to do about their feelings. they state that no-one else will ever know their "lonely dreams", meaning they have no desire to tell the other person about their feelings because they dont think it will amount to anything. "It was my turn to decide I knew this was our time No one else will have me like you do No one else will have me, only you" i think that this part is saying again, that the person is feeling very strongly towards the other... and that its up to him to decide what to do next, and if anything, they feels its "their time" because they are feeling it more than ever before. they say no-one else will have them, like the other does as they feel it is impossible for them to feel this way about anyone else, or for anyone else to have such a stong hold over them. "Youll sit alone forever If you wait for the right time What are you hoping for? Im here and now Im ready Holding on tight " i think in this part, the person is giving a kind of a 'pep talk' to either themselves or the other person kind of saying 'hey, im going to be alone forever if i keep on waiting for a better oppurtunity, why not give it all ive got now?' the lines "Dont give away the end, The one thing that stays mine" has strong significance, as i think it is saying that the person fears owning up to their feelings because they are scared of the outcome, or "the end", and that they are content with it just being theirs in their own thoughts, as they would like it to be.] and thats not all... :P "I wont always love what Ill never have I wont always live in my regrets" they are the most meaningful lines in the WHOLE song to me! kind of saying the person wont always be stuck in this situation, and wont always regret not saying anything... one day... when they move on... maybe... well, thats my opinion :P and what a long one at that! sorry if anyone disagrees with me... but that is how i see the song. i think i like it so much because i feel that i can relate to it at the moment... but anyways, thanks for your time, and ROCK ON jimmy eat world!! best band in the history of the world! peace out =)

Best song on the album, and possibly the best they've ever done. To me, this song is almost like he is speaking to himself. He's telling himself that you can't always wait for the right time cause you may be missing out on something great. That's just me though.
