Jimmy Eat World
"Drugs Or Me"
this is a song from "futures", new record by
Jimmy Eat World... the guitar is tune down half-a-step
to make it more easy to play, and this song is most played
with the piano, wich part is very easy...
intro:
This is the piano part arranged for guitar, maybe these
are not the perfect notes, but I re-arranged the piano
part to make it sounds better with a guitar...

verse (intro part)
D Bm
Stay with me, you're the one I need
G D
you make the hardest things seem easy
D Bm
Keep my heart somewhere drugs don't go
G D
where the sun shines low always keep me close
chorus
D Bm
If only you could see the stranger next to me
G
You promised you promised that you're done
D
but I can't tell you from the drugs
repeat verse:
Don't let go, you dig a great big hole
down an endless hole we'll both go
You're so blind, you can't see me this time
hope comes from inside and I feel so low tonight
repeat chorus:
If only you could see the stranger next to me
You promised you promised that you're done
But I can't tell you from the drugs
I wish that you could see this face in front of me
You're sorry, you swear it, you're done
But I can't tell you from the drugs
through the whole song you can play the same
chords... D - Bm - G - D...
(take me) I need your help
(so far away) To pull me up take the pain
(take me) Out from me
(so far away) Out from me
(Take me) If only you could see (I need your help)
(So far away) The stranger next to me (To pull me up take the pain)
(Take me) You promised you promised that you're done (Out from me)
(So far away) But I can't tell you from the drugs (Out from me)
(Take me) I wish that you could see (I need your help)
(So far away) This face in front of me (To pull me up take the pain)
(Take me) You're sorry, you swear it, you're done (Out from me)
(So far away) But I can't tell you from the drugs (Out from me)
Keep my heart somewhere drugs don't go
where the sun shines low always keep me close
END...
Maybe this song would be good even if played with a capo
on the first fret, so playing this chords through the
song (C - Am - F - C), but I think it's ok played in D
then you can do what you want, it's another beautiful
slow song from jimmy eat world...

| I think that this song is about someone who knows someone who is close to them who has an addiction to drugs. And no matter how much that person tells him/her that they're going to stop-they don't. And they keep saying sorry but him/her is getting tired of it. And the title goes along great with what I think it means (Drugs or me). Its kinda saying, "It's either you keep doing drugs-or you stop and stay with me". And it also ties in with the part where he says, "Keep my heart somewhere drugs don't go..." and I guess its saying that-keep me and our love-away from your addiction with drugs. But all that I've said-is what most of you have already said. But ohh well. | |

| I don't think this song is about anti-depressants at all...being one who takes them, I don't think it changes you as a person or "fabricates" at all, I just think it helps overcome inexplicable chemical deficiences that cause the person taking them to feel depressed/hate his/herself. But anyway, back to the song. It's extremely powerful, and it means a lot to me...I had this friend who wouldn't stay off drugs, and I tried so hard to help out, and he said he hated them so many times, and he promised he was done. But drugs mess with your friendships, your relationships, and your loyalties, so that in the end, the people who loved you can't tell you from the drugs. | |

| Like blessthebeloved said, it really is about someone's significant other or friend or somebody close... and their addiction to drugs. "If only you could see the stranger next to me" He's talking about how his friend or whomever is not the same person whilst they are on drugs. "You promised you promised that you're done But I can't tell you from the drugs" His friend says that they're done with the drugs... but his friend can't stop. "Keep my heart somewhere drugs don't go" I think that line has so much significance to this song... He doesn't want his friend to fall so much into the addiction that they forget all about him. He wants his friend to keep him close to his heart no matter what. I adore this song... too powerful. Too close to home. XoXo | |

| I think the 2 persons in this song are the same one. He's feeling the sort of schizophrenia that everyone who has ever been addicted to drugs may have felt. One part of him is tired of drugs and wants to stop, but the other part is still addicted and makes him drown more and more. | |

| I love this song. Its so beautiful and powerful. I love how it moves from one time period to another. This song isn't simply how he feels at one moment, but reflects the stages the relationship went through as his girlfriend struggled with drugs. The first stanza is so different from the rest because he introduces the song with his feelings of love for his partner...then he moves onto how he feels about the drugs. He wants her to keep him where the drugs don't go...he's saying he doesn't want the drugs to interfere with him and her. He doesn't want to be any part of it and wants to be safe from the harm it can cause. Then he begs her not to let go. At this point he still loves her and wouldn't give her up no matter what. He says she is blind and can't see him this time. She can't see how much its killing him, and killing their relatioship. I think when he says "hope comes from the inside" he means that he still has hope, but he's still depressed and worried about it. Then he says how he can't tell her from the drugs. She isn't the person he fell in love with, but he still can't let go of her. (We've all felt this, you're boyfriend/girlfriend changes so much but you still love them and can't give them up) When he says he needs her help to take the pain away, he still has hope that she can change and that they will be ok. He still needs her, and he still wants her to help him because she "makes the hardest things seem easy" He wants to feel this again and he begs her for this relationship again. The only problem is that she needs help more than he does, and she is the reason why he needs help. The title of the song makes it seem like he ultimately tells her to choose between him and the drugs, but the lyrics don't reflect that. The last stanza "Keep my heart somewhere drugs don't go Where the sun shines low always keep me close is reiterating his feelings from the beginning that he still wants to be with her. He's still begging her to keep him separate from the drugs. He won't give up. | |

| "They're pretty self-explanatory, I think, about someone who is hurt by their significant other's involvement with drugs. " have you ever thought about whether or not hes on medication, like prozac or paxil. "Hope comes from inside And I feel so low tonight " or if he is talking about a girl or family member or friend, who is fabricated by anti depressants. | |

| The song doesn't remind me of anti-depressants, but "pain" references 'little white pills,' so its a possibility. ANyways, this song makes me cry because it reminds me of trying to explain to the person I was in love with why I couldn't just walk away from my drug addiction. And it reminds me of my best friend, because she introduced me to this song. | |

| this also reminds me of my situation.....quite literally. my boyfriend is falling into an addiction and its really hard to find the real him through all the bullshit. i think this song also shows adolesence and how dependant some can be, but also i think the opening line shows how the person with the addiction is powerful and can change things for others, but somtimes the hardest thing is to change yourself. fuck, this song is so beautiful, it hits so close to home...i really love it. | |

| Depressing song, but so powerful and important. "Don't let go Dig a great big hole Down an endless hole Will both go " He's obviously so close to this person, that he doesn't see his friend's problem as just their problem, but purposefully involves himself in the equation because it directly effects him too. "You're so blind You can't see me this time Hope comes from inside And I feel so low tonight " He's trying to keep up hope, but continues to be frustrated with his friend's inability to understand what the drugs are doing to them and to everyone else around them. He's trying to stay focused, but for a moment, expresses his stress. | |

| It is a story. This, Pain and Polaris are a story of a relationship dealing with one partner's drug addiction. In this song, he's still explaining he needs the drugs and how much he believes they help the pain. But his partner is taking a stand and making him choose | |

| I completely agree with dpmoss. Whenever I listen to this song, I can't help but think of how powerful addiction is... any kind of addiction. It really alters people and makes them completely unaware of how they're affecting those around them. It's pretty sad actually. A fantastic song though that really succeeds in depicting how addiction affects people. | |

| I agree that I think it is one person in this song. Going back and forth with their thoughts. Thats how I relate to it...at least. And drugs...a drug could be a struggle with anything. Cutting is a drug once you start or self mutalation... Thats how I relate to the song. You dont want to hurt yourself...you say your done but your still scared and dont really believe yourself anymore. And you feel like you are two different people. | |
