I got Futures last year for Christmas, from my sister, and it's a special edition, with all of the demos for the songs. Each song has a little sidenote, in the album booklet, and in the one for this song, the title states, "The World You Love aka suicide." I think this explains a lot on it's own. The last verse, for example, states that he just wants the person there, with im. And in the chorus, the part of being as happy as they PRETEND to be. With something as emotionally earth-shattering as a suicide, sometimes people rely on you to help them through it, even if you aren't as strong as you appear to be. Everyone has their own ways to deal with life-changing things, whether it be a suicide or a big break up, and I think this is a sort of representation of one. [clare]

"dont it feel like sunshine afterall the world we love forever, gone " its like hes happy and warm feeling but he going to end the world he loves so much because of someting tragic that could have happened in his past maybe. also i think the "we" is possibly referring to him and whoever listens to the song. "Were only just as happy as everyone seems to think we are" -hes not happy, and not sad, but content. its like hes limiting himself to be any happier than what the next person thinks. hes getting rid of his ability to be happy on his own... "im in love with the ordinary i need a simple space to rest my head and everything gets clear" -i think this is more of being happy with not being happy. but then when he says "need" its almost like he just needs somewhere to go and get everything sorted out so he can think clearly about what hes doing "it might seem like a dream but it's real to me " -okay this part really gets to me. my sister left a note with these words on it. and i think it's referring to that feeling when someone you love dies, where it just doesnt feel real, it feels like theyll really be there when you wake up the next morning, but he's recognizing how real it is before he goes through with it. "you should see the canals are freezing" theres alot that this could refer to. maybe its that when canals (also used like passageways) freeze up, there is no way to go back and forth. everything just gets stuck where it is. so maybe hes stuck with the decision he's made. "you should see me high" which could be ironic to "it's real to me."he's getting closer to finalizing whether or not hes going to commit suicide so hes suddenly in a dreamier type state of mind.. "you should just be here be with me here it doesnt seem theres hope for me i let you down " -wow, these four lines mean alot. it's almost like a last plea for help, a little snap out of his state of mind, maybe the person hes talking about loves him and doesnt know what he might do, so hes putting a few words in about how he feels. it could also be the only thing in his life hes not satisifed enough with to end his life. so thats what makes it one of the last things he is thinking of, in a plea to save himself from himself.. "but i won't give in, not for any amount" -wow, so this changes things a bit. thinking about whoever it was he wanted there with him caused him to feel a little bit of regret for what he is about to do, but hes not going to give in to the thought of not commiting suicide. it sounds entirely ironic. i know. but well thats just the way my mind works.. sorry this was so long. thanks for your time. leave some comments correcting me if im wrong.

I absolutely adore this song. I always thought that it was about like... being depressed... and time just keeps moving on... but seeing the light in missed opportunities and really connecting with a group of people (friends)... but maybe that's an empty kind of happiness, too. I don't know. It seems positive, upbeat, but rather hollow. 1

im looking for a nice way to say "i'm out." i want out. I always thought of these lyrics as refering to wanting to break up with a girlfriend, but after reading some of the posts about suicide it could be saying that he wants out of this world. This, to me, would change the meaning of the entire rest of the song.

right from the first time i listened to it, this song struck me as dealing with touring "i got a story it's almost finished; now all i need is someone to tell it too - maybe, thats you." he's telliing a friend or family member who can't be with him about everything that happened so far close to the end of their current tour "our time is borrowed and spent too freely every minute i have needs to be made up - but how?" they spent a lot of time waiting and travelling around, which could be used differently, but at the same time there's no other way to play their music to people "im looking for a nice way to say: "i'm out." i want out." problems came up and for an instant, he would like to quit the band but can't figure out how to say it without hurting the other members and then lets go of the idea alltogether. "i fall asleep with my friends around me only place i know, i feel safe im gonna call this home" having been together as a band for several years, they've become extremly close, so whenever they are together it feels as comfortable and well-known as home. actually this was the line that gave me the idea the song was about touring. "the open road is still miles away ain't nothing serious we still have our fun, oh we had it once but windows open and close thats just how it goes" again, the thought of quitting the band comes up and is pushed away again "dont it feel like sunshine afterall? the world we love forever, gone we're only just as happy as everyone else seems to be" have you ever felt how the mood of the crowd and the band at a show influence the other's? if you're onstage and hundreds of people are cheering to you, you couldn't be completely sad, could you? on the other hand, once they come back everything they left behind might have changed considerably and they can't do anythign about it. "im in love with the ordinary i need a simple space to rest my head and everything gets clear" he needs some time and space for himself, somewhere quiet and, well, ordinary. "well im a little ashamed for asking, but just a little helps it gets me straight again, helps me get over it" maybe he is dealing with the less agreeable parts of being on tour again and talks to his band members about them and how they deal with them. "it might seem like a dream, but it's real to me" obvious, ain't it? making a living from doing what you love, touring the world to play your music in front of huge crowds has to feel like a dream even when you're in the middle of it. "dont it feel like sunshine afterall? the world we love forever, gone we're only just as happy as everyone else seems to be" "you should the canals are freezing you should see me high you should just be here be with me here" he sees and experiences amazing things but is sad that his loved one can't be with him and share them. "it doesnt seem theres hope for me i let you down but i wont give in now not for a million nows / any amount" she probably wasn't happy about him going away for weeks or even months, but he has been working on fulfilling this dream of his for so long he can't let go of it. as always, this is just one of many possible interpretations... 1 2 Next

It doesn't seem there's hope for me, I let you down, But I won't give in now, Not for any ammount Everyone seems to interpret that as the charactor deciding to to commit suicide, but I think it could be interpreted either way. It's either that he's let the people he'll be leaving behind down before, but he's not going to let them down again, and he won't die, or he knows his decision to die is letting the people he leaves behind down, but he can't face living anymore despite that, so he's not going to give in on his plans to die, he's going to go through with it. I'm letting you down, but I'm still going through with it OR I let you down before, but I won't let you down again.

to me, it seems like he lives in a different country, more like he is going to college somewhere out of where he is used to. i get this from the line, "the world we love forever, gone" and just other subtle things in the song when he says, "i want out" i think it is either referring to him wanting to either leave the country, or he wants out of the doorm, or apartment, he's sharing with his friends. " fall asleep with my friends around me only place i know, i feel safe im gonna call this home" but he doesn't really feel safe there. so he is asking someone (i'm thinking his family, parents probably) for money so he can have his own place. "i need a simple space to rest my head" the second part is referring to the money and how he feels bad about asking "and everything gets clear well im a little ashamed for asking but just a little helps it gets me straight again" i think the end gives us a clue to where he is, "you should the canals are freezing you should see me high" if anyone has ever visited the netherlands (holland), they would know there are canals everwhere. not only that but weed is tolerated. hmm i wonder. the end of the last verse is him wishing he was with his family, because, if he is a college student, he probably misses them, especially if he lives in a different country. he feels like he let them down because he didn't pay them back (?) or do something else for them.

This song to me is everything. The actaul meaning im sure is very different to how i take it. To me i think about my friends and how with them im safe. "don't it feel like sunshine after all, the world we loved forever gone." This to me means like even when things are bad and not going your way you just wanna smile anyway. "we're only just as happy as everyone else seems to be" Noone is really that happy but they are trying. I like this song and my meaning may be a bit warped but it means alot to me and makes me smile

this song means to me- when all that you have been used to for years changes in a bad way. "Ain't nothing serious we still have our fun, oh we had it once The windows open and close thats just how it goes" and "Don't it feel like sunshine after all The world we love forever gone We're only just as happy as every one else thinks we are, are"

This is my favorite song off the new album so far.... I like this part best: "dont it feel like sunshine afterall the world we love forever, gone we're only just as happy as everyone else seems to be im in love with the ordinary i need a simple space to rest my head and everything gets clear " It makes me feel happy! Yeah, this song does sounds like it's about drugs... But I get the feeling that it's not! *__*;;

jew is one of those bands that u can interpret anyway, because thier lyrics are so open. to me this song is about my world and fears. im looking for a nice way to say "i'm out." i want out. those are the ideal lines that describe me right now. i honostly can't handle all the things i get myself into. and since i have a HUGE issue with commitment, they are the lines i think about all the time. we're only just as happy as everyone else seems to be that. is so true.

Wow, I didn't know that, ReBirth. That really changes the meaning of the song to me, especially the end "It doesn't seem there's hope for me, I let you down. But I won't give in now, not for any amount" I'm thinking that probably means that he couldn't keep the person he cared about so much from committing suicide, but as hard as it is, he won't commit suicide himself ("give in"), because he still knows how important life and "the world we love" is.

It represents moving on. Or it could be ironci as in "Ohh, everything is going crap, I love this world" - but its more likey a moving on song..

It seems to me that a lot of the songs on the new album are related to addiction of some kind, probably to drugs. There always seems to be a positive spin though... A hope that things can change, and without that crutch, like here: "it doesnt seem theres hope for me i let you down but i wont give in now not for a million nows" I love what I've heard from the new album, "Futures", and it's good to see that JEW haven't slipped at all. Far from it, in fact!

I didnt really think of a drug addiction with this song, I really just thought of a take on life. Going through obstacles and facing them, and really just appercating life and what it gives you. Every part of this song, every line, I can relate to one thing in my life. this song could have multiple meanings, but I think what jew was trying to get across was that theres always going to be those things in life that happen. "The windows open and close thats just how it goes" this song changed my life. It really did. Its my favorite song.. ever,

I think this song is about being at rehab. "i got a story it's almost finished all i need is someone to tell it too maybe, thats you." hes explaining his problem to the group "i fall asleep with my friends around me only place i know, i feel safe im gonna call this home" he has friends there and know he is safe because he cant get drugs or alcohol "well im a little ashamed for asking but just a little helps it gets me straight again helps me get over it" he doesnt want to ask for help, and he hates admitting he needs it, but he knows its the only way to stay clean

Another correction on the lyrics: "but i wont give in now not for a million nows" is really: "but i wont give in now not for any amount." My favorite song on this album, I'm glad to see them retaining a lot of their roots, not letting their popularity mess with the sound too much.

To me, this is about wanting to get out of a relationship but not knowing how, wanting just to be with your friends and to lose the burden of a partner. "im looking for a nice way to say "i'm out." i want out. i fall asleep with my friends around me only place i know, i feel safe im gonna call this home "

OKay. This song i can see two ways. "i got a story it's almost finished all i need is someone to tell it too maybe, thats you. our time is borrowed and spent to freely every minute i have needs to be made up but how? im looking for a nice way to say "i'm out." i want out. i fall asleep with my friends around me only place i know, i feel safe im gonna call this home the open road is still miles away ain't nothing serious we still have our fun oh we had it once but windows open and close thats just how it goes " I see this as saying that he has somehting to tell people. Maybe he needs someone to listen. He's tired of wasting time on whatever this addiction is doing to him. Your not very productive when your smashed and I think he realizes that and he wants to make it worth it. He's looking for a way he can get out of the addiction. He says nice but I'm sure the way he is thinking isnt so nice. Maybe it is. Maybe its a cry for help or a cry of suicide. He is always with his friends. Maybe high or doesnt have a home. But this is where is always is. He falls asleep there and thats where its home. The open road parts talking about that there is still a long hard way to and "open road" Meaning death or addiction free (see both ways I caould see it?) He talks about fun. Maybe in the begining getting "high" was fun and its not now. Its only hurting him. Or maybe that he used to be able to have fun the the addiction is not allowing him to. "but windows open and close thats just how it goes dont it feel like sunshine afterall the world we love forever, gone we're only just as happy as everyone else seems to be " the window part is maybe life comes and goes or opportunites come and go or somehting. Then maybe if he does commit suicide its like sunshine. Hes finally happy. The world he loved is gone. Maybe he never loved it. Or maybe he over came the addiction and he seems as happy as people always thought he was. "im in love with the ordinary i need a simple space to rest my head and everything gets clear well im a little ashamed for asking but just a little helps it gets me straight again helps me get over it it might seem like a dream but it's real to me " He is "in love" with the simplicity of how life could be. He likes the straightness of that little bit of high he has that makes him sance again. He ashamed to ask for some because he wants to quit sooo bad but he needs tha sanity. Then the sunshine part again. I think it goes back and forth like from talking about pain in the stanzas and happiness in the chorus.... "you should the canals are freezing you should see me high you should just be here be with me here it doesnt seem theres hope for me i let you down but i wont give in now not for a million nows " I think hes saying that a way out is closing up. He says he sees no hope left for him becuase he keeps falling back into the drugs. But he says he wont give in now... even for a million times feeling the way he does on drugs. I know. Sorry, that was like every way possible it could be seen. But it kinds put two ways. Maybe hes getting happy or maybe he is commiting suicide. I love it either way.

While I used to look at this song in a very personal way, I only recently decided to look at the song for more than just what it made me feel. After looking, I think this song is someone telling a story. I gotta story it's almost finished and all I need is someone to tell it to, maybe that's you. Our time is borrowed and spent too freely, every minute I have needs to be made up. But how? Ok, so it's very literal, I know. If you look at the structure of the sentences it really plays as if someone is telling a story. Everything but the chorus is like you are getting snippets of a one sided conversation. If you read the lyrics and don't sing them you get a better grasp of this. It's like someone is venting, someone is cofessing. Also, what I find interesting is the use of describing the life he lives: "friends around me...feel safe." "we still have our fun" "I'm in love with the ordinary.." and follows each of them with the way he feels as an afterthought. "Windows open and close that's just how it goes" "I'm a little shamed for asking but just a little helps. Get's me straight again. Helps me get over it." "It may seem like a dream but its real to me" A beautiful line like "Canals are freezing" (image) fades right into "you should see me high" (feeling) and the desperate "you should just be here" And then there is the chorus. I think the chorus is the reaction to having just shared everything he is thinking and probably has never voiced. "we're only just as happy as everyone else seems to think we are." What sells this song for me is that it has such a beautiful sound which turns the darkness of the lyrics into a completely nostalgic and bittersweet thing. "Don't it feel like sunshine after? The World we love forever gone," is ironic.

Oh man one of the great JEW songs, i think it's about a couple who used to be one of those couples everybody thought would last forever and get married because they looked so happy but after awhile the love kind of ended and the world they once had was gone, like i said wonderfull song

i know jimmy eat world has a history of writing songs with very downtrodden themes, but this song always felt very optimistic [save for the "it doesn't seem there's hope for me, i let you down" lyric]. it's probably my favorite jew song ever. "don't it feel like sunshine after all, the world we loved forever gone." it's definitely about being young. whatever it was he had just gone through, he's perfectly content with where he is in his life and what had just happened to him. there's so much more to come ["the open road is still miles away"], but to just ENJOY your time and the people you share it with.

ok so i have this theory that this song could be about suicide. kinda like what DarKirby said. but that he, himself would be the one committing suicide. "i got a story it's almost finished" -It's almost as if it's the story of his life and he's almost done with it, but he just has a few words left to say. "our time is borrowed and spent to freely every minute i have needs to be made up but how?" -like.. he's sick of wasting his time, and wants to make whatever he has left meaningful and worth something.. but he doesnt know how so why worry about sticking around. also, this is like an amazing song, JEW could have done a little better drawing the bits and pieces of randomness together, but i don't care. this is an aweosme song because it can be taken so many differnt ways. "i fall asleep with my friends around me only place i know, i feel safe im gonna call this home " -my little sister commited suicide and of course, i was curious so i looked into what causes it and everything. and i found out that these people were actually somewhat satisified with their lives and thats how theyre able to end them. so he's with his friends and hes happy because hes protected from depression and drugs around them.. maybe im thinking about this all wrong, but also its like when he's saying im gonna call this home, i can picture him with a satisfied smile.. and yeah.. also. the song kinda gives off a happy vibe if you've ever heard it. that makes me think its more of a depressing song in a sweet and sour kind of way. gah my computer is about to freeze i will have to finish later.

First of all, valerie, you dont have the chorus right whatsoever. Its not, we're only just as happy as everyone else seems to be Its.. "Were only just as happy as everyone seems to think we are" Anyways, when the song was first played live, the track listing on the set list read "suicide" as the title for this song. Im under the impression that in a very bitter-sweet way, this song is ultimately depressing to me. Definately along the lines of being young (perhaps drug use?) dont know. But its a damn good song.
