i LOVE this song... i always wonderd who it was about... but elton has had many torrid love affairs sooo u never know... i once heard it was about Madeline Bell, one of his back-up singers... but that wasn't from a very reliable sorce, then again the only reliable source would be Elton himself.

I aslo agree with what Toast is saying. If you look at the verse: "But oh how it feels so real, Lying here with no one near , Only you and you can hear me, When I say softly, slowly." Here I think that his praying to her after she's gone.

There's no argument about who wrote the song. They both wrote it. It's one of the best songs I ever heard and Elton and Bernie should both be commended for it!

I heard this song for the first time when I watched almost famous. The scene where they are all sitting in the bus singing this song is my favorite. I went out and bought the soundtrack for this song. I love it and will never get tired of it.

Elton John's long time songwriting partner Bernie Taupin wrote this song about his then wife. "Your Song" is also about her.

well it may be wrong i don't know but i really like toasts interpritation of it. every time i listen to it now thats what i think of. i don't think it has 1 specific meaning. i think you are supposed to draw your own conclusions. it means different things to different people and thats good. it means it has emotional value to a wider group of people.

Sorry, but you guys are all wrong. Bernie writes the lyrics and Elton writes the melodies. Bernie wrote this song about his wife, Maxine. She was a roadie like Penny Lane in "Almost Famous". That's why the song was so fitting for that movie.

In the first 4 lines, I think that Elton John is describing a woman that he loved, and like 'tiny dancer' said, a back-up singer, or something along the lines of that. Then, in the second 4 lines, I think that he is describing perhaps a car accident that occured, hence; "Jesus freaks out in the street Handing tickets out for God Turning back she just laughs The boulevard is not that bad" and a lost life, maybe the woman that he loved. Then, in the third 4 lines, he is describing a concert of somesort where he plays a song that he just wrote for his lost love. I think that the relevance of the "tiny dancer" is perhaps a memory of this lost love, who died due to the car accident. In the chorus, he says; "Hold me closer tiny dancer" which I think represents the feelings that he still feels for this lost love. And, "Count the headlights on the highway" represents the car accident. And, "Lay me down in sheets of linen" represents the death of this loved one. This was just my first impression upon listening to the song...but what a song it is.

Here's what was in Rolling Stone, Q: What is Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" about? My friend says it's some woman muse, but I think he's singing to his penis. A: "That's Great!" says a laughing Bernie Taupin, the song's lyricist. "But I wouldn't belittle myself so." Your friend is closer to the truth, although Taupin says the song wasn't about any one woman. "We came to california in the fall of 1970, and sunshine radiated from the populace," he says. "I was trying to capture the spirit of that time, encapsulated by the women we met. They were free spirits, sexy in hip-huggers and lacy blouses, and very ethereal, the way they moved. So different from what I'd been used to in England. And they all wanted to sew patches on our jeans. They'd mother you and sleep with you - it was the perfect Oedipal complex." Why "tiny," then? They were all petite and lithe. And 'Tiny Dancer' sounds better than 'Small Dancer' or 'Little Dancer'

I think that this song is about the girl on the road, maybe a wife, but it seems to me that its more about a girl with him on the road...she knows the words to the songs (The words she knows, the tune she hums) "count the headlights on the highway" makes me think of them on the tour bus late at night. the line "seamstress for the band" is what really tipped me off that this isn't a wife but more just someone along for the tour. as for the lines "Jesus freaks out in the street Handing tickets out for God Turning back she just laughs The boulevard is not that bad" I think thats talking about the people that stand around on street corners in Hollywood, giving fliers to people advertising their various religious groups (handing tickets out for God) A lot of people are worried about walking around the Blvd because of this and the other people, but she just smiles and laughs.

i totally agree with toast, now that they gave me that view. when i first heard this song, i thought it was about a women who was a ballerina but wanted to be more, wanted to marry a musician, so she ran away, just jumped in her car "count the headlights on the highway." but then maybe a man who loved her, who wasnt a musician or what she wanted in a man misses her. and he always has this image of her dancing like she use to. and maybe the "jesus freaks out on the streets" was about how she got out of there so fast, she was crazed on the highway. 1 2 3 4 5 Next
