C AM G
ALMOST HEAVEN WEST VIRGINIA BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS,
F C AM
SHENADOAH RIVER. LIFE IS OLD THERE OLDER THAN THE TREES,
G F C
YOUNGER THAN THE MOUNTAINS, GROWING LIKE A BREEZE.
C G AM F
COUNTRY ROADS, TAKE ME HOME TO THE PLACE, I BELONG
C G F C
WEST VIRGINIA, MOUNTAIN MOMMA, TAKE ME HOME, COUNTRY ROADS.
C AM G
ALL MY MEMORIES GATHER ROUND HER, MINER'S LADY,
F C AM
STRANGER TO BLUE WATER. DARK AND DUSTY PAINTED ON THE SKY
G F C
MISTY TASTE OF MOONSHINE TEAR DROP IN MY EYE.
C G AM F
COUNTRY ROADS, TAKE ME HOME TO THE PLACE I BELONG
C G F C
WEST VIRGINIA MOUNTAIN MOMMA TAKE ME HOME COUNTRY ROADS.
AM G C
I HEAR HER VOICE IN THE MORNIN' HOURS SHE CALLS ME
F C G AM
RADIO REMINDS ME OF MY HOME FAR AWAY, AND DRIVIN' DOWN
G F C
THE ROAD I GET THE FEELIN' THAT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN HOME
G F
YESTERDAY, YESTERDAY.
C G AM F
COUNTRY ROADS, TAKE ME HOME TO THE PLACE I BELONG
C G F C
WEST VIRGINIA MOUNTAIN MOMMA TAKE ME HOME COUNTRY ROADS.
G C G C
TAKE ME HOME COUNTRY ROADS, TAKE ME HOME COUNTRY ROADS.

An interesting thing about this song is the area in WV he mentions is Jefferson County which is really more Virginia than WV, and has also been overrun by sprawl from D.C the last few years.

I don't know if this is true, but I heard that John and the others who wrote this song had never actually been to West Virginia. Anyway, I love this song. I grew up near the Blue Ridge Mountaints and I haven't found anything more beautiful. There is nothing quite like that peaceful, blue haze. West Virginia and Appalachia is like a world of its own-- life really is old there. I love it. This song really makes me want to go home.

Man, I hate the idea that thousands of drunk college kids scream this song as some sort of lame ritual. I think it's a song that has a lot of feeling behind it. It's a beautiful song. A lot of people tend to think of John Denver as being dorky and cliche, but I love him; he was an amazing songwriter.
