I don't think this song has anything to do with ice cream. The word Carvel means "Flush" in the context of hitting a nail into a piece of wood until the head is flush (level) with the wood. It's about how things "level" out in the end, things have a habit of sorting themsleves out. "Up and down and that's how energy stays alive!" "All the good times are on the way," is another way of saying it all works out in the end.

frusciante is a god. the gutteral screech leading into the 'up and down...' bit is amazing, and his trademark backing vocals are fantastic & integeral as usual.

john has got the power to change what you think about things thats why hes so great and also because he dosnt care one bit about fame which makes him dwn to "normal" peoples level!! (whatever that means). he can show you a bad time and make you wonder why it happened but not regret that it happened. i think thtas why hes so amazing

zephyr47 if the icecream and cake place is where john was born i think this song might have something to do with his childhood and espically his dad as he wa not the best dad to john and this may bring back memories to john and he wrote a song partly about it mabey it was something in his mind when he came back from somewhere something like that

Well (in reference to ghost27), it might not metaphorically have anything to do with ice cream, but in the song it actually says "Driving to eat a Carvel cake". I don't know. I've thought a little about it... and maybe that (the Carvel shop) could be the personification of his childhood... like maybe a memory of younger and more innocent times, driving to eat Carvel as a reward... but then on the more metaphorical level, yes, it does have to do with its literal meaning. Either way, I agree that the song could be about the universe sort of course-correcting itself-- that things find a way of evening themselves out.

First song to hear on Shadows CD and I sat their speachless. It's freakin great. The only part I have anything to say about is the up and down thats how energy stays alive and i wouldnt have it any other way to me it means that life has it's ups and downs but that's what makes each of the other better and I'm with John, I wouldn't have it any other way.

This would make a great opening theme to like a batman type film, have to be a little darker than last years effort though, but that whole 'heavens recieves you and throws you back' theme. Anyway i think if anyone sees the short film stuff produced by johnny depp, about john in the mid 90's when the chillis hit it big, they'll understand where he is coming from in this song.
