This is an amazing song. Johns lyrics are so real. To me its about the aftermath of a relationship. He is remembering how he once had the girl over at his house, in the very room he is in now, and now that she is gone he cant beleive she was here, and misses her so much. He was used to waking up with her beside him, and the hardest part is waking up and hoping for a split second she will be there, but than realizing shes gone. the line: "do i have to fall asleep with roses in my hand?" to me it means he dreams about her, about them being together in his dreams, and when he wakes up to reality, she is not there. so he is thinking that maybe if he slept with roses in his hand, he could give them to her in his dream, and he would wake up with her by his side. but he once again realizes she will not get them, because she is "gone, gone , gone ,gone.... when your dreaming with a broken heart, the waking up is the hardest part... amazing song.

"now do i have to fall asleep with roses in my hand?" I just a couple minutes ago realized what that meant and then I gave the song a harder listen. Its strange because I just remembered that I DID have a dream about somebody last night and didn't remember until I heard this song. It wasn't a very serious one but I have had dreams about a girl I strongly wanted to talk to and one dream in particular was pretty vivid. we were very happy in my room making jokes and what not and I woke up in the middle of a laugh that carried over a feeling of happiness into my morning that was so strong I felt like she was still beside me when I started moving. When I turned to my side and opened my eyes she was gone and I was like 'what the hell is this? where did she go?' and it hit me that I had been dreaming and it never happened. Then came the most heaviest sinking feeling I have had in my life. I started repeating 'no..nooo noooo!!' and started pleading with God that she would be hiding in my bathroom or something but of course she wasn't. I'd have commit suicide to this song if I had it that day. But yeah, I definitely understand where he's coming from (evidently). And I sort of do want to fall asleep with roses and a love letter for this new girl just to see what would happen.

Oh my God, Dorias said it all that needs to be said. All I can do is restate that this is the perfect song for if you are just getting out of relationship. Amazing song.

"with roses in my hand" >_< When I first heard this song I almost broke..., this whole song is just... just so true. and it's not fair really, but it's life, and we MUST believe that all gets better, even if she/he is gone gone gone gone... Once you cross the line there's no use looking back behind you, because what's gone is gone... and there's nothing you can do about it, even if you are willing to "fall asleep with roses in your hand", cutting and bleeding you dry in order to get him/her back... it's useless, it's too late. it's gone.

This song is so amazing! The first time I heard it I pulled over on the side of the road and text messaged some of the lyrics to my ex-girlfriend. I can totally relate to this song. I hurt so bad all I wanted to do was sleep--and I hated waking up, because she was in my every thought. I thought of her so much--it felt surreal. I gave her up and it was the hardest thing I have done in a very long time... I am still coping with it. The lyrics: "she takes you in with your crying eyes then all at once you have to say goodbye wondering could you stay my love?" Seeing her cry hurt the most and made me want to take her back and try to work on things again, even though I felt we were doomed. I still want her and want to be with her but she is gone and I made her leave. So this is probably a llittle backwards on the leaving part but this is what I took from the song.

This song speaks so beautifully about what losing love means. the line "wondernig could you stay my love" bascially decribes the relationship thats over and u wish things could be the way they once were, but u know in your heart that at this point, no matter what, the relationship will never be the same. I can relate to this becuase when a relationship ends, what you miss is what isnt there anymore. But you always have to realize that no matter what you do, those feelings or that situation or the relationship is gone. it cant come back ever, even if it was there weeks ago

I can totally relate to this, when you are in your dreams you can have that person, so why wake up to a reality in which they are gone? It seems so much easier to just let sleep take you and hold you for as long as it can before you have to wake up to the truth.

This song broke me down. It just took me back to that place, that moment. Every word was like every step the day after that "fateful" day. The waking up IS the hardest part, especially when you cried yourself to sleep. When you wake up, you're like "Not again!" and you start crying again. Your roll out of bed, but you're not strong enough because you're exhausted. You're so tired of feeling that hurt. You end up on your knees, half crying, half praying, "Lord, I can't go on..." When you've finally found the strength and the courage to face the day, you think "I can do this. I can't live without him." BUT YOU FIND YOURSELF CALLING HIM. But he doesn't answer, or he tells you you can't call him anymore, or you suddenly remember that you were the one who broke it off anyway, you hang up, and you're back to crying. It hurts because you've given so much to this relationship...It hurts even more when you don't want to give up on it, but it's too late...He's gone. She's gone. Even if you want to fight for him/her and give it another go, it's over. Moving on is always a hard process.

JOHN MAYER SPEAKS THE TRUTH. If anyone, and I"m going to guess that a lot of people have, has had a broken heart, that's exactly what's it's like. You wake up in a fog, and you think, "maybe they're still there", but then it kicks you in the head. You feel like you can't do anything with your broken heart

personal testimony: on the way to go see john last month, i was with one of my closest friends, and we were talking about which songs we liked on the new album, and I said this one because i can really relate. and she sort of shrugged it off, because her relationship was going well. they recently ended it, and she told me last night that she got it. she got the "waking up is the hardest part" and i just wished more than anything that she didnt get it. that she could keep shrugging it off. because you have these dreams, remembering how you were with this person, the happiness and comfort that they provided, and then you wake up and have to remind yourself that they're "gone." and that dream stays with you all day, and you have this instant happiness but you have to remember that it was just a dream. and the waking up is allllways agony.
