I know you've been sworn
I read your complaint
You're needing someone older
And though I've been warned to live day by day
There's something taking over
Did you expect to kiss me one time
while looking at me with the same eyes ever again?
So come on and face it
So come on and face it
It's time that we say it
You can cross the line whenever you want to
I'm calling it love soon
Close your mind and waste some time if you have to
I'm calling it love soon
It's not about you now
It's what we are
Your mother complains that you need a man
You haven't mentioned me yet
And all of your friends don't know who I am
I've been your best kept secret
I understand I wasn't part of the plan
A dollar short, a minute early
But I am your man
So come on and face it
So come on and face it
it's time that we say it
You can cross the line whenever you want to
I'm calling it love soon
Close your mind and waste some time if you have to
I'm calling it love soon
It's not about you now
It's what we are
Aet's bypass the bullshit and move on because
the minute hand moves faster than you think it does
And by no fault of yours
And by no fault of mine
The bottom line is laying
in the bed that we've been playing in tonight
You can cross the line whenever you want to
I'm calling it love soon
Close your mind and waste some time if you have to
I'm calling it love soon
It's not about you now
It's what we are

| This is my favorite song of John's... thus my nickname: "I've been your best kept secret". This has been me more times than I can count...only I'm girl... All of John's songs are biographical of our lives because he's a real "normal" guy...a normal person. He's not affected at all...he's just John. And that's the coolest thing about him. | |

| The best part of this whole song is the part that says, "let's bypass the bullshit and move on because the minute hand moves faster than you think it does and by no fault of yours and by no fault of mine the bottom line is laying in the bed that we've been playing in tonight" GREAT Lyrics. It says you can fool around in a relationship for only so long, then there has to be something real there, a bottom line. It's great to hear a GUY say this! | |

| This song means a lot to me right now because I'm dealing with a similar situation. It's almost like man on the side but not as adulterous. It's a girl not accepting the fact that she may be with someone great because she is holding out for something better. The story of my life. I'd be kicking myself if I was the girl he wrote this about. | |

| I feel really stupid asking this, but i heard about john mayer from a friend. They had his lyrics in their profile and i liked them so much i checked him out. I love his lyrics and by the song "83" im assuming hes about 24 or so. Am i right? What kinda music does he play? | |

| Everytime i read john mayer lyrics im amazed. Once again i am amazed. This guy is amazing. His goal of reaching people through music has been reached at least to me. This song to me reminds me of this girl whos like my best friend. We get along so well, but shes always looking for someone better. However unlike the song her friends know who i am and i think they can see it, and im sure she can see it 2, but i guess im not part of the plan. maybe i'll go off and tell her everything i feel about her, but i dunno how to do it without losing our friendship. | |

| To me this is about a girl who started this thing with a guy and now that he is ready for a relationship she doesn't think she is. And he can't get over the fact that she started it and she won't continue it. And maybe she was only with him because she couldn't have him. And now that she can it's not exciting. Or am I way off? At least i can tell you that I know what he is talking about :) 1 2 Next | |

| im shocked! this is me. its ME! you know when you find that perfect song to soundtrack your life? a john cd would definitely be the soundtrack of my life. his songs could play in the background of any given situation of mine. thats why i love him. this song relates perfectly to me. you want to say youre in love... but the other has no visible intention of taking it further. you feel like youre putting yourself out there almost.. and theyre not reurning it. it drives you crazy. "it's not about you now it's what we are" you just want to be like.. forget your stupid pride and admit you love me dammit! :) | |

| Why is everything John writes so biographical of my life? The girl can't make up her mind. What does she want? She isn't willing to recognize what it is that is between her and that guy. And time changes everything. He won't always be around for her when she grows up and changes her mind. grrr.... this love business is frustrating | |

| did you expect to kiss me one time while looking at me with the same eyes ever again? How bout it? John knows lovers then friends doesn't work out... it's like the DMB song "Tonight let's be lovers, and tomorrow go back to being friends" it just doesn't work that way and everybody knows it. | |

| I once had one of my best guy friends tell me that this song reminded him of me. Because we were driving around listening to John Mayer and he was saying what all the different songs meant to him, and who they made him think of pretty much. So this song will always remind me of him. I actually just felt special knowing that he had a song that made him think of me.. :) | |

| yea 'from stars 2 tears' that is what it means to me too...i'm in a relationship w/ an older person...and she had a problem telling her friends about us. this song totally explained how i felt. "And all of your friends dont know who i am, i've been your best kept secret" "you're needing someone older" John is the man, and he knows what its like! p.s. she told her friends and they've been very supportive! | |

| danika: If you ever listen to John talk about the song '83 though he says they aren't only memories from when he was 6 but from when he was 5,6,7,3,4 just from that area so saying "he was 6 in '83" really doesn't mean anything because his memories aren't just from when he was 6 in that song he could have been any age of a small child | |

| This song can definitely relate to alotta people. I'm in the situation now too. Like, it's bad too cuz some days he's nice and most days not, but I still really like him, and he can 'cross the line whenever he wants to'..which is sad, but it's life =) john mayer puts everything better! | |

| This song tends to fit atleast one of everyone's situations. One of those "just-for-fun" flings that accidentally turns into something that means a lot to both of the people involved, but it just hasn't been admitted yet. I'm in one of those right now, it started out to be a fun fling, but you realize there's a lot more there than you ever expected. "and though I've been warned to live day by day there's something taking over, " a great line to describe what ends up happening. | |

| this is a sweet song. but...i almost feel like the girl. maybe she isnt just trying to look for someone better necessarily. maybe she is shy and makes excuses to make it look like she doesnt care as much as she does. maybe she doesnt want to officially call him her boyfriend or even admit that she has a crush on him because it's a risk. if you blur the lines of friendship and a relationship, you're less vulnerable... just another spin on it. | |

| I don't agree with a lot of you, you guys say that he's saying "let's be together" I think he's saying "we're together so get over yourself and let people know" like the girls that think their boyfriends are "nerdy" and they're too cool for them, or older then them so they won't let people know they're dating. so the guy is saying "Look i love you and want to be with and you love me, so why not let the world know" now i'll step off my soapbox | |
