Lyrics:
Verse 1:
Do you ever get the feeling
that we started in the middle
or have you ever had the sense
that we've been lying just a little
I mean come on
it's not like we've known ourselves that long
Verse 2:
and I cant say I really blame you
for being bored with the beginning
always staring at the score
just to figure out who's barely winning
but dont you know
there is a reason strong, move slow
Pre-chorus:
and I'm okay
if you're okay with
wasting time
but when you trace
you always see the bottom line
Chorus:
we are tracing
I hope you know
we are tracing
Verse:
and if you want to know the moment
I knew that I was still alone
I found I never learned your number
I only stored it in my phone
you'd think by now
I'd know the shape of calling home
Pre-chorus:
and I'm okay
if your okay with
wasting time
but when we trace
you'll always see the bottom line
Last chorus:
we are tracing
I hope you know
we are tracing
we're both alone
we are tracing
we are tracing
Last verse:
did you ever get the feeling
that we started in the middle
or have you ever have the sense
that we were lying just a little
I mean come on
its not like we knew ourselves that long

| "i mean come on, its not like we've known ourselves that long" - i love this. i mean yeah, they probably haven't known each other very long - but more than that, he's just saying that they're way too young to be in this deep aka we're not actually in this deep. "the shape of calling home" is a big deal to me. these days it's rare to be able to dial someone's number with your eyes closed. and when you're in love with someone, it's like they are your home... especially once you're out on your own. 1 | |

| I think this song is about a relationship that is kind of fake. The two of them are almost pretending to be in love because they want to be. He points out that they really haven't known eachother for very long and that "there is a reason strong, move slow". The part about not knowing her number by heart is just more evidence that he isn't really in love with her. Eventually the bottom line is that they don't know eachother that well at all. And he's ok with that. As long as they both know it. i could be completly wrong though lol | |

| To me, this song is about two people trying to get back together after breaking up. "and im okay if you're okay with wasting time but when we trace you always see the bottom line" They both already know what to expect from each other and it seems like they are trying to be and feel the way they used to by doing the same things but it's never the same. They are "tracing" and the bottom line is what used to be. | |

| doctortim is right about the lyrics ... i wish we could change that. But "tracing" is about entering a relationship, moving way to fast and pretending that you love each other even though you haven't known each other that long. | |

| It does sound like the fake relationship that several of you described. I think tracing goes along with that. It's the difference between drawing a picture and tracing a picture. If it was real, they would be "drawing" they're own relationship. Instead they are "tracing" over the lines of the relationship they want to be in. "but when we trace you'll always see the bottom line" No matter how well they "trace" it, their relationship will never be what they really want. They're always going to see the lines they are tracing over, and those will always look better than what they've got. | |

| This is one of the most amazing songs he has ever done... it just speaks to me so much. Incredible live too... I'm not gonna lie, I cried when he did it! | |

| I'd never heard of this song till I found it here, which, trust me, is quite odd, but you're both right, it is amazing! | |

| The line you have as "there is a reason strong, move slow" should be "there is a reason strong moves slow". He's saying that strong relationships are built up over time; you can't just blitz through all of the necessary stages in a new relationship by copying past relationships. | |
