It is a really sad song but I caught something abotu suicide in there too--"looked outside at the car in the drive and the suitcase on the backseat inside, sure its so she cant look out behind at the road"--if she cant see the road, then shes more likely to crash...i think its interesting that its something subtle like that. she wasnt planning to drive off a cliff. the blinded vision would look a lot more accidental

My roommate Vickie is moving away, she just got out of a 4 year relationship, she needs to get away, this song hits home for me, it is almost like it is about her, exactly. Love it because it has helped me cope with my loss of her. 1

I think it's so she can't look *back*. She's just getting out of the town, a bad relationship. Don't look down / She seemed alright / You might be asking / Where is Tori tonight Somewhere out on the highway I'm sure she's fine...

ummm that comment sounded really stupid, also I have one thing to change, her boyfriend is the one who first gave her the idea and she didn't really think about it until then, now she's going and realizes he's right

Maybe I'm not reading in deep enough, but I think this song is pretty much laid out in the lyrics. It's about a girl, Victoria or Tori, who just got out of a bad relationship and feels that she needs some time to regroup ("she says 'i might not be seeing him soon, i gotta few things i've been meaning to do'") and so she says goodbye to a good friend (the person singing, John or someone, whoever) and the friend is passing along the message of how he saw her and why she left.

the song is about this girl tori used to come by Johns dorm at berkley with her friend every night. one night john and matt were in their room and she came by herself and offered to iron johns clothes for him. john and matt thought it was really weird, john was laying on the bed with his guitar messing around and sang 'dont know why tori came by'. and thats how 'Victoria' came about -- well as ive heard from a reliable source. its such a beautiful song.

I think this song is actually about tori, who's leaving her boyfriend. She doenst say good bye to him, she just tell john (or the narrator) to say good bye for her, because its too hard for her to say it herself, and john is saying this to the boyfriend....i think so!

what I get out of this song, is that Tori lives in a small town, and she wants to get out, do something big, about the suitcase, its so she can leave, because she's so connected to her home town that if she takes one last galnce at it, she'll never leave. She's telling John (or the narrator person whatever) to tell her boyfriend she's going because she dosn't want to tell him herself, that might also prevent her from leaving. her boyfriend person, i guess maybe they could have hit a rut in their relationship, im thinking their high school sweethearts, and she really loves him but not in the same way anymore she needs her space, very far away, its the same way she loves where she lives, she loves it but it's not for her anymore, she has the potential to do better things, that can't happen there, or with the people around her. I might be completely off the real meaning of the song, but thats what I got out of it. Sry if it sounds like im rambling.

This is my favorite JM song. To me, Victoria is one of John's close friends and she just got out of a long relationship, and she needs to leave her memories behind. It's really sad.

I think that Tori was dating someone who was living with John and she is leaving town. She came by to tell her boyfriend, but John was the only one there...So now this is his way of telling his friend that Tori is gone... I also think the lyrics is: Mentioned something Bout how you were right Instead of: Mentioned something Bout how you arrived But oh well....

Dude...do you know how excited I was a few years ago when I heard this song. My name is Victoria "Tori" for short and it just kicks ass, because it is not a widely popular name...anway I love the song and I think that even though it came about because of the girl ironing his clothes it has a much deeper meaning. Somebody mentioned the suitcase and I do feel that is very important, she's never going to look back and her suitcase is placed where she can't...

It's not about suicide, people, it's without a doubt about a break-up...don't be morbid...

If you think about it, all the suitcase is blocking her rearview so that she can't see the place she's leaving. She doesn't want to have second thoughts, symbollically. You don't get into car accidents if you can't see through the rearview. (At least not just because of that.)

actually I thought that your comment really hit it on the head for me. She needs to leave the town for whatever reason, it was this guys idea first and now she is making herself go through with it. and definately not about suicide, in my humble opinion.

john mayer is absolutely a radiohead fan, the song body structure is almost identical to karma police, and he also does the kid a cover, ive also noticed some other very similar chord patterns he uses that are in some radiohead songs, lyrics are cool too tho
