| it's about the people who are always trying to bring you down but you rise above and do something great, that people wouldn't expect. people may doubt you but if you believe in yourself, you can accomplish what you want, even if it's a difficult road. "i wanted water but i walk through the fire if this is what it takes to take me even higher and i'll come through like i do when the world keeps testing me..." kind of reminds me of "whatever doesn't kill you only makes you stronger" | |

| Wait, jalouse, it's NOT about the music industry? I thought maybe it would be that people think he's just a pop star, and couldn't rise above it, and everyone wanted to watch him fall with his new album or something, but he knew he'd rise even higher and do something amazing. It still makes sense with the "where my confidence comes from" deal he said... but like you said, he said it's not about the music industry so I wonder what it pertains to... | |

| i think it's about wanting to live a meaningful life and ignoring the doubters and naysayers out there (vultures) who are just waiting for one mistake to move in on, he's gotta keep moving and improving just to maintain where he is in life | |

| Um, John Mayer is a SONG WRITTER! Like angrycherokee said, he write pretty much all his lyrics unless he is doing a cover. Anyway I think song is about not giving up, and rising above all negative forces. And sometimes you're gonna have to take the hard way to get what you want. I love this song. :) | |

| I thought this song was about more than just everyday struggles, I thought it had to do with his "celebrity life", which, until Jessicagate, was under the radar. The "vultures" would probably be the paparazzi, and stalker fans (vultures right outside my door), and when he says "they've never gone this long without a kill before", I think it refers to the fact that he's managed to remain somewhat scandal-free, but even if he has to go through all the "celebrity" bullshit, he'll still come out clean on the other side because this (music) is what he really wants out of life, could be wrong, but that's what I think! | |

| This could mean so many different things...everyone interprets it differently. I see it as the 'vultures' as people who try to push you into things you didn't want to do, like vultures being the media making you be skinny or wear the latest things, or smoke...whatever. And JM doesn't want to let them in because he wants to be his own person...the fire is the abuse and judging he goes through...but he'll do it to be his own person. | |
