These days with the world getting colder
She spends more time sleeping over
Than I planned
Tonight were gonna order in
Drinking wine and watching CNN
It's dark I know but then again
It's the brightest thing I got
Cause I'm covered in rain
No I'm covered in rain
Fire woods to fire places
Summer stolen, fallen places
People watching, all the people watching, everybody watching me
Standing by the missing signs at the CVS by the checkout line
She puts her quiet hands in mine
Cause she's the brightest thing I got
When you're covered in rain
Cause I'm covered in rain
Cause I'm covered in rain
No I'm covered in rain
It's alright
If you dont want to go on
It's alright
If you dont want to be alone
It's alright
If you dont want to go home
I understand
I understand
I understand
You and me and everyone, covered in rain

I mean I think this song is deeper than it comes off as..he's depressed, lonely, and YES he has a girl to keep him company..but that's not really enough to "make" his world. I think it says a lot about relationships not being ones entire life. He's also willing to let her into his life, even if he is depressed, b/c she brings some happiness and hope. I think this song is a nice compliment to "Something's Missing"

Anyone else notice that the last little part is from a Big Head Todd and the Monsters song?

This is a nice little addendum to City Love. To me, it's about a guy who is with a girl who's not necessarily the best thing for him but he doesn't really care because he likes her. It's about loneliness and how good it can feel to be with someone, even if they're not the "best" for you.

This song is my favorite. I dont know if you all have like te extended version with the LONG guitar solo..but i love it so much more than the over version i heard. I really dont know which one is the original but its like 10 minutes long, and it is awesome. Incredible how he kinda tells and ongoing story!

This song is deeper then it comes off as- it is an addition to "City Love". "City Love" is all about the first part of a relationship, the *woot woot* everything's dandy part, in NYC. then, this song is about more of the in-depth part- everything's not great. In NYC. the NYC part is really important- "City Love" was pre-9/11, this one is post-9/11. Catch my drift? Everything in New York City is great, but something goes wrong, and things are still OK. John explained this comparison better on the new DVD... "Any Given Thursday". GO PICK IT UP!!! Gooooooood DVD. I love the man.

This song is about NYC - Post 9/11. She spends more time at his place because no one wants to be alone at this tragic time when the world is "getting colder" They stay in watch CNN coverage. The "missing signs" at the CVS refer to the people who were in the towers whose families put up missing sings. The (???) and fallen place is "summer stolen, fallen places" meaning 9/11 stole summer and the fallen places is the WTC. Basically this is hard time and everything is so sad, but this girl John has is the "brightist" thing he has. This is def. one of my favorite songs of his. The "Any given thursday" version is SO much better!

Not only is this song a brilliant addendum to City Love, but I also love the allusions to his other songs as well. Come December Lydia left (St. Patricks Day) Mentioned Something about it being for the best and I can't say I disagree Now I'm standing facing west tracing my fingers round a silhouette (Back to You) I haven't gotten used to yet but it's the brightest thing I got

I always wondered what he was saying when he said "come December Lydia left." I didn't think "condescending linear left" made much sense... I have to say, though, the solo overpowers the lyrics. I didn't give them much thought the first 20 times I listened to it.

this is one hell of a song. pretty much reminds me of my first love who loves it when it rains... well, i guess this first part of the song is where he likes the company of her but didn't expect her to stay by him that long. then the second part is where how he is remisnicing on how they both hung out when they were together.. finally the last part is where he is cool with the idea she wants to stay with him all the time... i guess that is..

This song links in to City Love in more ways than one: not only does he mention his relationship with Lydia - "Come December Lydia left...." - he also uses the same chords in the bridge to City Love as the main chords in Covered in Rain. If you listen to both you'll see that they fit. In addition to this the bridge in City Love contains the title of this song - "She called up and came to me covered in rain...". Great song. Great artist.

I love this song. On the Any Given Thursday CD, it has this loooong musical interlude and it's so relaxing. I like the City Love/9-11 stuff, too. That's really interesting.

I expected more from the title. I dunno. Don't mind me...just being covered in rain has always held such a deep idea to me and I mean it still does in the song, but I dunno...not the one I expected from him?

wow i love the last part where he talks about lydia leaving. that is so sad. it really gives you that emotion that all of went through after 9/11. i went to nyc about a year and half after 9/11 and all i could do was look at the empty sky.

this song reminds me of satisfaction in a relationship. maybe it isn't where he's always gonna be, but for now 'it's the brightest thing' he has. by 'he' i'm referring to john. ;) this is my favorite john mayer song because it reminds me of just being comfortable w/ someone which is something i haven't felt in a while.

Me and my friends often discuss this song and I have a few things to say on it. I did hear that this song is about NYC after 9/11 and it's about how his relationship is related to the city's general mood, and this song is definately the sequel to City Love (Lydia is in it, and it's based in NYC and it shares the lyric Covered in Rain). I think Covered in Rain has different significance in both the songs, in City Love it represents happiness and those moments that you always remember ("I remember when you came to me covered in rain" that was City Love but not the most accurrate quote) and in this song it represents depression, being "Covered in Rain" is the way he's surrounded by all this sadness and it's got him down he's covered in it, it's about how the city is falling apart as is his love, things aren't okay, the beginning of the song is like, "yeah, I'm depressed, things suck but I've got this amazing girl", but I think later on his depression (and the city's in general) has killed their relationship and he's like, "The world sucks and now my only bright spark is gone" and then he breaks into solo. Not only the lyrics are crucial to understanding the song, the solo is all important. Me and my friends were listening to the solo and my friend said that it was almost like he was crying through his guitar, it starts of all depressed kind of like he's quietly sobbing and asking "why" but then it breaks into anger the point where you're flipping out, so upset that you have to scream it out. But yeah this song is amazing and I hope all that came to make sense to people, to honest I don't think I understand most of what I wrote... oh well. God Bless, Mozes

This song is absolutely amazing and completely beautiful. It's about a relationship trying to survive in a broken world (after effects of 9/11) and a sequal to 'City Love.' It's kind of like a "we're holding up while everything else falls apart" thing. Their love is suriving in a world that is slowly crumbling, where the only stability they have is each other; they find hope in the fact. But as with any song...it can mean anything to anyone. That's the beauty of it all =]

here's what i get from this song...kinda different from most posted here.... i showed this to a friend of mine, and she said "i don't get it, is he happy or sad?" i think he's happy. elated. ecstatic. i'm thinking this because i've felt like the words in this song..... sometimes, life just sucks. or you're going through some really difficult time, or you're just down. but, you've got this one bright spot...the love of your life. and even what seems like the most boring thing - like watching cnn - is the best thing for you when you feel like that. i know i've felt like that. heck, i feel like that right this very moment. maybe that's why i'm taking this slant on this song. :)

i really think this is an amazing song...in my opinion one of john mayers best songs. i think its really interesting that he uses the name lydia in both this song and in city love, other than that i don't understand how the two are connected, or is the name thing the only part?...can somone explain? 1 2 Next

Also, could someone make the corrections to the lyrics. BuzzinLikeNeon has them right, as well as the extra verse he uses in the Any Given Thursday DVD/CD. Thanks

I'd just like to mention a few corrections to the lyrics which, even though they're small, I believe give it more depth than the incorrect version above. "She spends more time sleeping over Than I'd planned" "From fireworks to fireplaces Summer stole what fall replaces And now we're people watching All the people, people watching us right now" "Come December, Lydia left She mentioned something about it being for the best And I can't say I disagree It's killing me Now we're standing facing west Tracing my fingers 'round her silhouette I haven't gotten used to it yet But it's the brightest thing I've got When I'm covered in rain" Great song, even without the guitar, but the guitar just makes it all the more better. What an INCREDIBLE song. It's a fave of mine from John.
