i heard jack johnson on a radio interview a couple of months back talking about this song and his album, "Brushfire Fairytales". The name is actually part of the theme of the song - little children are read bedtime stories before they go to sleep, and Jack actually used to watch the news before he went to sleep - around the time there were brushfires in the USA somewhere - so he used to have these awful dreams about them. Also, regarding the discussion about Diegetic, I thought it was funny at first that someone would put a word in a song that's really quite centred around film and film studies (i'm a film major myself) but then when I found out Jack was a filmmaker as well as musician, it all made sense.......

I think its great that he points out that more people died than cried about their deaths. the line "so baby close your eyes to the lullabies on the news tonight" intrigues me. i am wondering if it is just that he (as a child) would be going to bed at the same time that the news is on or what. like, this awful news is just a lullaby. i think maybe it is just pointing out how we shield children from the true evil in the world. mama is saying it isnt real so he (again as a child) doesnt worry about it. great song

From the internet: DIAGETIC sound: Sound that is produced by the narrative such as dialogue, as opposed to non-diagetic sound such as background mood music

Diagetic / Diegetic - As a follow up to BigEd's comment, a good resource would be the following site: www.ncte.org/lists/ncte-talk/mar99/msg02034.html. It's just another example of Jack's film background.

i really liked this song because my whole life i've hated the news since it's just so depressing. it's always bothered me how all the stories are so sickening, and i feel like jack johson understands that too. i think it's great that he made a point to write a song about what the world has come to, because it is a really interesting and important subject.

Jack Johnson uses the word 'diagetic' in the same verse as 'whos the one who decided to put the MUSIC behind the news'. The fact that 'diagetic' is mentioned in the same verse that also talks about music behind a TV broadcast is significant because that word is most usually associated with music. Presuming that the Newscasters can hear the music will make it diagetic, making the News show the 'diagetic world', which is unclear. Or maybe it could be that many people think it is unclear why the person who 'decided it would be alright' to put the music on put it on. To him it would be diagetic, so his realm of musical chosing is the 'diagetic world'. 1 2 3 Next

This'd be my first post to the service, and I figured I'd make it count - As I see it, this song isn't entirely about the horrors of the world that are broadcast to us on a regular basis by the television, radio, and print media. It's more about the questions that plagued us as children, but we no longer ask ourselves, because we've grown so accustomed to the answers, and also because our parents and the other adult influences of the world led us to believe that they were somehow less real or terrible than they actually were/are, to protect us from the First Ugly Truth: Bad things happen to people, and not only do they often happen without reason, but just as often the people who are supposed to stop them either can't or just don't care. When understanding is traded for innocence, often both are lost. It's a decision no parent can be faulted for making, in their instinctive desire to protect their children from the world that they know too well to be a brutal and uncaring place. Regardless of the justification, however, it's one decision that's hurt every child at some point. Children understand more of the world than their parents would like to believe. On a personal note, when I was around five or six, there was a special on one of the big networks about AIDS. I didn't completely understand what I was hearing and seeing, but it was at that moment that I came to understand that not every nightmare went away with the morning. I knew after that night that people who didn't do anything wrong in their lives could suffer and die. This disease, to me, was a rude awakening to the horrible place that the world really was, and is. I didn't need to ask my mother to know this - The fear and sympathy on her face as she watched the program was enough to tell me that my understanding was as complete as it needed to be. When I first heard this song, it immediately called to my mind that night. I almost cried right there, and when I was alone and listening to the song it was impossible to contain the tears. It brought up the kind of sadness and fear that experiencing the world mercifully obliterates. It's a great song, and will remain one of my favorites for a very long time.
