Jack Johnson THE NEWS
A Bm
A billion people died on the news tonight
A Bm
But not so many cried at the terrible sight
A
And mama said, "It's just make believe,
Bm
You can't believe everything you see,
D Dm A D Dm
So baby close your eyes to the lullabies
A
On the news tonight."
A Bm
Who's the one to decide that it would be all right
A Bm
To put the music behind the news tonight?
A
Well mama said, "You can't believe everything you hear
Bm D
The diagetic world is so unclear
Dm A
So baby close your ears"
Bm
[[:On the news tonight,
F#m
On the news tonight,:]]
D Dm A
The unobtrusive tones on the news tonight.
F#m E
And mama said, "Mmm, mmm."
A
Why don't the newscasters cry
Bm
When they read about people who die?
A
At least they could be decent enough
Bm
To put just a tear in their eye.
A
But mama said, "It's just make believe
Bm
You can't believe everything you see
D Dm A D Dm
So baby close your eyes to the lullabies
A
On the news tonight."

| this is such an amazing song and i also, as well as probably everyone else out ther, have thought about why the news is so terrible and how newscasters can be so stolid in their reportings. It makes you think that everyone is like that. yeh sure some people watch the news and think "wow thats terrible" but how many sit there and cry on a regular basis. We all have just come to be immune to the fact that this is terrible news. We dont seem care. I know everybody does care but it has just come to be that most people don't show it anymore... | |

| i have come to the conclusion that jack johnson made up the word diagetic. i looked in two dictionaries. lol but anyhoo... pablo- you are SO right. i love the line at the end "why don't the newscasters cry when they read about people who die? at least they could be decent enough to put just a tear in their eye" it's SO powerful when he sings it. sometimes i just skip to that part of the song cause it's so amazing. i think everyone should hear that line because it's kind of a slap in the face when he sings it. it makes ya go yeah why not? jack is a genious (except for the diagetic part). | |

| I love this song... It just makes you think about the horror stories you hear everyday from around the world. I mean, how are the young children ever going to grow up without constant fear if all they hear are the bad things that happen every day? | |

| What with the word "diegetic"? That's not a word, is it ? Or is it spelled incorrectly. Aside from that, this song is really touching and has a simply stated profound meaning. | |

| Jack obviously knows a little something about film because he makes several references to it in many of his songs. The word “diagetic” simply refers to whether an aspect of the film itself is motivated by something in the film’s plot or setting (diagetic) or is part of the filmmaking process. This term usually applies to sound and lighting, but it can have other applications as well. For example: Hearing music from a live band is much different than hearing the music from the same live band on TV. The sound has been altered to fit the sound frequency that comes the television set. So in other words, it's sort of make believe. That Jack Johnson is deep. | |

| ya'll are only scratching the surface... there is truth in ya'lls statments, but this song goes so much deeper. its a critique of not only the newscasters but all people. we dismiss what we see on the news off hand, we hardly notice when death is reported. I have a question though, does anyone know what diagetic mean? | |

| this is a great song. It's a staement on today's society. The world has become so calos and jaded. We see these horrible events reported on the newsand we just kinda blow it off because it doesn't effect us personally. Jack is such a genius, I love this entire album. | |

| "Why don't the newscasters cry when they read about people who die" I love this line. If i were a newsreader, even though it wouldn't look good to cry on tele, i'd go home and cry myself to sleep everynight. The news is so very depressing, i have enough trouble keeping my face dry just watching it, but reading it to a whole country with a straight face... that would be too hard | |

| my sister's boyfriend played this for me in the car one day after he heard about how i'm not allowed to watch the news. after all the kidnappings and stuff that have been going on lately i started having panic attacks at night thinking that someone was in the house so im banned from the news and have to take sleeping pills on some nights if i want to sleep..so he dubbed this as my song. it's really an incredible song, ive often wondered why the newscasters show no expression when reading about those horrible stories. everytime i watch the news i tear up..it's awful stuff the news is. | |
