If a black man is racist, is it okay?
Am E
If it's the white man's racism that made him that way,
F C
Because the bully's the victim they say,
Dm G
By some sense they're all the same.
Am E
Because the line between, wrong and right,

Is the width of a thread, from a spider's web.
Am E
The piano keys are black and white,
F C D
But they sound like a million colours in your mind

I could tell you to go to war,

And I hope he does when he sends you to fight.
Am E
Because the line between, wrong and right,
F C D
Is the width of a thread, from a spider's web.
Am E
The piano keys are black and white,

Should we act on a blame?
F E
Or should we chase the moments away?

Remember forever the guns and the feathers in time.

Because the line between, wrong and right,

Well it wasn't the first song off 'Piece By Piece', 'Nine Million Bicycles' was and 'I Cried For You' was next. It is a very good song however. It is thought provoking and takes a slanted look on racial issues. Great songwriting and very mature lyrics and vocals.

As a black woman, I find it really, bad offensive. She should be educativing people, rather than spread prejudices against menkind. I can't believe Katie Melua could do this to black women. She seem lovely before. F

I agree with Naunaud. That black woman totally missed it. This is really really sad. But well, the human brain is hard to use. Maybe a bit too hard for some people.

As a black woman, I find your assumptioning that I stupid grave, bad insulting. Maybe you think we "savages" or "slave labours" that need good beating. Black people have brain like you.

The piano keys are black and white, But they sound like a million colours in your mind. --> there's more to us than just the color of our skin. I think it's a beautiful song, ten times better than 'Nine Million Bicycles' :P

Katie is saying that racism is wrong. Yet if a balck man if racist to a white man, is it ok because of the way white people have treated black people during history. The song is about statements such as "war is wrong, racism is wrong." It is looking closely at generalisations like those and finding that nothing can be generalised. (ie murder is wrong, but what if you murdered someone like Hitler, Saddam or Robert Mugabe. Is that wrong or right?" The chorus is not really about black and white people, it is about the way of viewing issues, ie such and such sees everytihng in black and white. The reference to colours is that nothing is that simple.

This song is, I guess, the first one that'll be released as a single and which will really showcase Katie's songwriting ability. A beautifully crafted song. The only thing that might put people off is the intended naivety in the question on the first line of the song. If people just sit down and take time to actually listen to the lyrics, this has the potential to because a very popular and well-received song. It's due to be released on the next album and is my favourite Katie Melua song of the lot. It strays a bit from the Jazzy style in Call off the Search, but Katie has said that she has influences of jazz in her music, yet she doesn't consider herself a jazz artist. If the other 10 or so songs on the next album are as thought-provoking and catchy as this one, then I think she might be on to yet another winner. Keep it up Katie!

I think the movie Crash (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0375679/) exemplifies this song quite good.

If you have to ask: i was talking bout the human brain in general. No color included. Look around all over the world: there is no indicator that stupidity looks for colors.

The piano keys are black and white, But they sound like a million colours in your mind. I think these lines mean that all people, doesn't matter - black, white or other - should unite and come together and stuff.... it's like, black people are black keys, white people are white keys, they are separated, but when you play and use them all together, they sound beautiful.

I agree, it is so gorgeous, and being a piano player, the lines about the piano keys mean a lot to me. I love how she brings to light issues like racism and war without sounding preachy - instead of being like other artists that just say "war is wrong," she thinks about it. Her voice is gorgeous, almost haunting, and this is by far my favourite song of Katie's.

I agree with monkfluence. I think this song is about looking at things, and thinking they are black and white(simple), when really, they are much more colourful. Nice song though. Oh, and TannieRock....this isn't being nasty about black people. Far from it, imo. Listen, look, learn, read and THEN state your opinions, please.

This song is NOT racist. If it was, it probably wouldn't have even been allowed to be released. I think it's a beautiful song.
