this song totally relates to my situation, i was with my girlfriend and i adored her. Even though it was a long distance relationship of 50miles we still saw eachother every weekend. She decided to break it off and i was gutted because i was so close to her emotionally and spiritually, and i havent seen her since, this was 6 months ago. I basicaly now think that 'we might as well be strangers' as i dont even know who she is anymore, and i miss her dearly but she doesnt feel the same. its an awesome song non-the-less.

The singer is probably in love with a girl but she's begining to change. she s acting differently. he doesnt understand her anymore. she's getting on with her life and is becoming more and more of a stranger to the boy. so he doesnt undertsand her heart. and so they might as well be strangers.. im not going to right my comment on the song. because keane are the best band in not only singing but letting out their emotions in their tunes.

I don't necessarily agree that the song is about wishing they'd never met. I think it's more about the wierd realization that it's actually over and finished. The person he once knew so well is just as familiar to him as a stranger. It's a strange revelation that everyone experiences once in their life.

LooksLikeLove, I totally agree with you. My girlfriend broke up with me 2 months ago. It's so incomprehensible to see how two people that still shared everything together on one day just break apart and the next day, everything is lost. And now after those 2 months that we were separated, I feel like "we might as well be strangers, We might as well be living in a different world". "I don't understand your heart It's easier to be apart" is also very true, because I can't possibly understand how she chould stop loving me, so right now it's easier to be apart than to see her behave like some distant friend - like a person I don't recognise anymore. I hate and I love such songs at the same time. I hate them because I hate the truth they mean for me but I also love songs that really provoke a feeling. This song is brilliant because it is so simple and so true.

there really isn't any hidden meaning here. i'm sure that everyone can relate to this. having someone you were very close to, relative, friend, lover, and then for whatever reason you grow apart, and you are like strangers to each other. it really is a wonderful song.

I totally agree with Poisonedbeauty. He still misses "her" - as the way he used to know her in the past, but something changed about them, they grew apart.. it's all different now. (Sadly.)

One of my favourites...simple yet so beautiful, and the way it builds so briefly and then drops away again is brilliant.

i think its like... a friendship/relationship that seems to fade without any real known reason.... like there's no concrete break up, or fight, or anything. you just kind of grow apart.
